  • PBS viewers voted this their ALL time favorite Aria's ever aired on Live from the Met. The quality of THAT broadcast of the 10 ten culminating in this, is the best quality I've been able to find--sound wise, especially---but they only show a few seconds of the applause at the end---which kind of misses the point for their most "ICONIC" performance EVA! They obviously have that whole performance, which was broadcast live, it in their vaults and if not in HD at least very good quality.

  • WOW

Her performance was stunning.I will never know how she keept it together with the audience giving her so much honour and glory. She is a true master.Look at the same performance from 1963----she is a living diva-the gift of her voice is a marvel, and I just love her.

    Thank you,

    Henry

    California

  • Parabéns:)))

  • this performance is the best yet, I had not seen it and the audiences' response with the standing ovation must have been very rewarding for Miss Price, will add this to my collection along with her Carmen

  • I had never seen this... I am in tears... enough said.

  • To this day..... I'll never forget this moment. When Price finally relents and drops to her knees, and the crowd wants to cover her in glory, I am reminded of how noble humans can be to each other in those rarest of moments. Beyond beautiful

  • The zoom in on her face at the end of this clip is one of the most powerful things I have ever seen. There is so much emotion in her eyes that it is impossible not to cry.

  • One of the greatest night's in my life at the MET.

  • I don't know how she did it...I don't like crying, especially in front of others, because I pretty much consider it a personal weakness if I do, but I would have started BAWLING if I had been her! She's made me cry countless times, though.

    She was simply wonderful.

  • by sheer luck someone gave me tickets to the gala...a moment I will cherish forever...

  • priceless simply divine such clear and beautiful chills up and dow the entire frame of my body

  • I'm crying at work! You can see in the way she holds and finishes that last note that she's truly saying goodbye. Completely overwhelming. One of the greatest sopranos of all time.

  • I wonder...what must it have been like to be there... In the arena...I HONESTLY think I would have passed out once she hit the C!

  • There will NEVER BE another Price! This performance brings tears!

  • IM sobbing. This is the most incredible thing I have ever seen. Never will there be an artist more committed to the art of opera.

  • Awesome.....

  • I must come back to this performance every few months, just to get my jolt of PURE JOY at seeing this legend of opera history sing this as no other will ever sing it and then sit awash at the instantanous universal acclamation from that audience which gave her one of the most famous and probably one of the longest if not the longest in history ovations of thanks, joy, love, admiration, astonishment, reverence to her and her craft. It infuses me with hope, and a new reason for living. Try it.

  • Simply put, Price was a machine. She 'manufactured' sounds that mere humans could only dream about....her legacy is one of perfection and just plain ol' hard work. There will never be another Leontyne.

  • 4 people accidentally hit the dislike button

  • When she retired, she said: "I'm so glad people ask me WHY I reitre rather then why NOT."

The wisest thing an opera singer can do :)

  • Pourquoi s'être retirée? Elle est splendide!!

  • WHERE DO I BUY THE ENTIRE VIDEO OF THIS PERFORMANCE?????

  • @SingcerelyStudios unfortunately THE MET apparently refuses to release this performance on home video! I DO NOT KNOW WHY!!!!!!!!!!!! But I have tried for years!

  • @cubanbach WE MUST KEEP AFTER THEM!!! It is so unfair to the OPERA WORLD and future singers to not be able to watch this incredibly stunning performance!!!!

  • This is the first time that I've realized that the aria is a lament. Not an aria, per se (from an interpretation standpoint). But for Price to sing this, at this her farewell, it's just 'mind-blowing'

  • such a great American artist!

  • Precious the Price...

  • A Divine experience...

  • Now that's how you receive an applause.

  • Thank you so much for this! I remember watching it on TV back in 1985 and weeping! What an amazing way to end your career, with class, elegance & stupendous talent!! She is THE Aida!

    Thank you again!

  • Goosebumps! OMG! Drinkin' in the adoration @ the end. Classic!

  • No word can do justice to describe the Leontyne Price experience, because she's truly a Gift from God. The emotions one experiences with her artistry can't be verbalized

  • There is no Aida but Leontyne.

  • It was as if she was bidding farewell to the opera stage as well! Powerful!

  • so amazing, you are so amazing.

  • Amazing ---agree with ShangoJamal--never heard like this before and probably will never be sung like this. Just superb.

  • I wonder wether she realises what she brings to my life and that of many others. I thank God for her.

  • Leontyne is a gift from God.

It is a privilege to hear her sing. God bless her.

  • Wow!

  • brava! brava!! bravissima!

  • It really does bring you to tears!

  • stunning-no other word for it.

  • It doesn't get any better than this. Got to love this woman

  • how can three people not like this? they must not have a soul. leontyne price in her 60s can outsing any aidas out there. she's just that amazing.

  • Oh I LOVE Leontyne Price i am going to sing this Aria in the Competition next month in June 2011 and i believe i am singing it well i need your blessings and love i am a young and up coming Dramatic Soprano and at this pointing time i believe that now is the time for me to go and share my Talent with the world i am 34 years now soon will be actually on the 16th November 2011

THANKS PRICE you are my inspiration

  • @startobesoon75 Hi! You did a very good choise! All you have to pay attention is the change of time/rytm (Verdi was expert in this!) and the hight C that must be strongly supported by your "down" belly with a very vigourous and a full, full breath, like you would like tho swalow all the air of this world.I know that you know what I mean.Good chance, and I would like to hear from you soon!

  • So much bloom on her voice, so much control, so much Verdian style still present at 58! It's a gift sopranos 25 years younger can only imagine having, and here, at an extremely emotional event, one of the repertory's most difficult and exposed arias is done without batting an eye. Marvelous at any age. And how on earth did she keep herself from breaking down? Anyone would have forgiven her for doing so. The lady is incredible.

  • What an exit...and I dare you to watch the final 3 minutes of this clip and the many ferocious 'bravos' not find yourself weeping like a baby.

  • FANTASTIC!

  • Going through all the videos on here. I finally got around to transferring my video to dvd from this. I was fortunate enough to have been there in person for this. One of the most amazing nights in my years of going to the Met. As a child it was Price who inspired my love of opera and there was no way I wasn't going to be there for this. I didn't have an actual ticket in my hand till maybe 2 minutes before the curtain went up. Fun to relive just now.

  • My son died in Iraq two years ago. Though we had a very talented soprano who performed at his funeral, one of his requests was that Ms. Price's version of this song be played if anything happened. Even though he excelled in three sports, he always preferred going to an opera than anything else. Even as a young boy, every Saturday we would go to the opera. It was like he was going to Disneyland.

Thanks for posting this- the best rendition of the song in my humble opinion.

  • @trainerstone i dont know if i am doing right or not writing this .. i was just crying moving by this rendition of Price until i read your comment about your son who died in Iraq and i fell down broken in tears ...i was not expecting that.. a deep pain thru my soul.....

  • I taped this performance from the TV in 85. Every time I watched O Patria Mia I cried. I played it so often that the tape broke. Thanks for posting..

  • This for all posterity is and shall remain a symbol of artistry. You don't have to like this artist, you don't have to appreciate her voice or what she sings here; but if you are delusional then you probably often miss and deny truth. Artistry being a form of truth is very evident here and will remain after all else has faded including life itself. Thank God for YouTube video. Jehovah Is Praised!

  • Words Cannot describe how much I love this woman! What an artist....next to the word "artist" in the dictinary..is the name "Leontyne Price"!

  • Amazing! Her voice is so smooth and lovely. Perfection.

  • Ethereal, Ms. Price's voice is a gift from above , w/o a doubt!

  • It's settled. Nobody will ever beat that. Period.

  • I will never forget watching this live on TV. Thank you for posting it. It is a historic moment. .. incredibly moving.

  • Oh, God!!! And THIS was a television moment-the people in the audience knew exactly what this meant to her - and responded as much to that as to her divine singing.Great beyond words.Blessed who shared such a moment, huh?Moments like this are very rare and hard to imagine in our times...if not impossible...

  • This was and will always be one of the most stunning moments in television, in opera, in music, in life, and in the history of one remarkable person's career.

  • Thanks for posting and many thanks to all other Users for those great, clever and purposeful comments, which I share all. This is a voice from Heaven and we are fortunate enough to have witnessed and loved it! Keeping the voice in such a state later in life is a miracle. Leontyne's breath control mechanism is exemplary and unique. A true miracle. This is one of the most breathtaking (!) rendition I've ever heard. Young soprani: just look and listen. Maybe your brains and common sense will learn!

  • I've lost count as to how many times I've seen this, yet it remains, to me, a lesson in the art of magnificence.

  • Wow..I remember when when it was telecasted, this was the aria that stole the show. In my view point Ms Price was not only saying farewell to her country but to Opera as well. She was and still is a class act and this farewell performance confirms it.

  • @bigjoetube: Please refrain from using the great diva Price as a platform for your religious beliefs. We're here to listen to her.

  • she is the best Aida

  • THE BEST AIDA OF ALLTIMES!

  • my fav part is 6:22 til 6:46 omg so beautiful her high notes are so breathe taking!!!

Davvero straordinaria!

  • that note @ 6:34 is Just heavenly makes me wanna cry!

  • This is a voice created by God! There can be no other explanation! Simply heavenly! It makes the angels jealous!

  • Ms. Price is Aida!! No one can touch her is this role. My favorite soprano by far. She had it all. I was fortunate enough to meet her and she was most gracious. I do love Sills, Sutherland, Fleming, and Norman also. We are so lucky to be able to hear a voice like this on earth. I still tear up from this clip. Magical!

  • Onegin, you are my God, and Leontyne my Goddess. I love u both!!!

  • she's a strong woman!! but you can see that she's so emotional here and she's abot to cry!! so many years studying!! searching, and working hard for your art!!! an at the end of all!! the public pays you with this great ovation!! i just hope one day i'll be good enough to feel all the emotions she felt in this moment!... brava!! brava!! my favorite soprano and a true artist!!

  • totally heart warming!

  • the emotions on her face are priceless!

  • wow and double wow

  • It´s a very moving document. No need to speak about the fabulous singing in this farewell, but the emotions in her face, all the memories and the grateful applause from the audience- it´s moving.

  • A voice from Heaven! Beyond any other version I have ever heard. She had a Divine gift and certainly knew how to use it. May you be well and know how proud we are that you are an American!

  • All I can say is, "Wow!"

  • My God!! My God!!!

  • This is one of the finest moments of vocal artistry of the 20th century. .. never to be forgotten.

  • brava! brava! brava!

  • holy. shit.

  • If I were to go deaf after listening to her magnificent and glittering, rich voice I will know that I've heard the most beautiful voice worth listening to.

  • Absolutely marvelous, just marvelous!

  • No woman will ever sing like this again. It is really incredible.

  • The singing is so superlative that it's difficult to believe that this is a farewell performance.

  • Price is W O N D E R F U L !!

    BRAVAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

  • Ok, some of the posts on different singers argue about the "C". How good it has to be, not important, whatever. Man, when you hit it like she does in this recording, and at her age, it shows you that she is the GREATEST Aida ever~!!

  • @spizzell1 You are correct except it was LIVE and the very last time she sang it on stage.

  • Ditto to all the good reviews below - you all took the words right out of my mouth! The only comment I have is that I see this copy has been view the most, but, there's another copy of this piece where a PBS lady is talking at the beginning to tell you that the viewers voted this the #1 Opera moment, Leontyne's last Aida at the Met and her farewell to the opera stage in 1985 - that copy has less white noise in it - much clearer - you'll appreciate the difference in the sound quality.

  • You can feel every word she is saying touching your soul

  • Its gets me everytime when she drops. Makes so proud on so many levels.

  • I have watched this clip so many times and every time I see it ,it inspires me to sing!! She is OPERA GREATNESS AT ITS VERY BEST!! Thank GOD FOR THIS GIFT OF A WOMAN!! LORD HAVE MERCY!!!

  • I have watched this clip so many times and every time I see it ,it inspires me to sing!! She is OPERA GREATNESS AT ITS VERY BEST!! Thank GOD FOR THIS GIFT OF A WOMAN!! LORD HAVE MERCY!!!

  • I have watched this clip so many times and every time I see it ,it inspires me to sing!! She is OPERA GREATNESS AT ITS VERY BEST!! Thank GOD FOR THIS GIFT OF A WOMAN!! LORD HAVE MERCY!!!

  • bravissimo

  • wow this is amazing. I've never heard anything like this before. Gave me chills. Not fun to watch late at night when you're home alone. Kind of spooky. SIMPLY AMAZING.

  • If god's name is Leontyne, I believe. Either that or god's voice is issuing out of her!

  • I lost track of how many times I slapped my forehead during this performance. Absolutely stunning, totally without parallel. There may well never be another one like her.

  • @JohnnyMarsden "Never be another one like her"..... safest bet anybody could make. Anybody who comes accross with her voice can consider him/herself a lucky human being.

  • My God. She is truly The Queen. Thank goodness that I lived to see this.

  • I always thought Price's technique just kept getting better and better the older she got. There is an OUNCE of vocal decline. She sings that high C with a purity like no one will ever hear again -- just such ease of singing.

  • Possessing for decades one of the most beautiful voices anyone ever heard, and practically owning the role of "Aida," how did Price manage to get through this night?

  • Simply the best! She is queen!

  • O Patria Mia will never be sung like this ever again.

  • @ShangoJamal neverrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

  • @ShangoJamal exactly why no one else should sing it ever again. they won't live up to it.

  • This brought tears to me eyes..her still emotion throughout the ovation is haunting, and peaceful at the same time. She is the Grand One. There will never be another like Miss Price..

  • This has to be the best version of this song i've heard...EVER.

  • A brilliant and touching moment. Brava diva.

  • Bracing. Blinding. Overwhelming.

  • At her farewell performance. This was the longest ovation at the end of an aria in the history of the met. She deserved it. What a magnificent voice.

  • "The longest ovation at the end of an aria..." You're making that up. She had just as long an ovation at the end of the ACT III Trovatore aria in 1982. I remember Caballe got five minutes in Vespri in the 70s. etc etc. How about "one of"?

  • This ovation was not at the end of an act or an end of an opera. It was at the end of an aria in the middle of Act III. Caballe received her five minute ovation at the end of an act, as did Price at the end of an Act in Il Trovatore'.

  • As you know "D'amor" in Trovatore comes in the middle of Act III. It was after that, in 1982, that Leontyne received a long ovation--longer than this, I'm pretty sure. Anyway, what is your source for saying this is the "longest"?

  • From an hour long tribute to her on the program "Classically Black" on WILL-fm with Roger Cooper.

  • Price received a 42 minute ovation in Il Trovatore at the Met in 1961. Thats the longest in Met history. Pavarotti has the record in Germany, 67 minutes and 165 curtain calls

  • You might want to check out Domingo - Otello - Vienna - 80 minutes - 101 curtain calls - 1991

  • I know in the a Guiness Book Pavarotti has the record for must curtain calls @ 165. I dont know about the length of the ovation record though.

  • Note that the 42-minute ovation was her *debut* at the Met--her first-ever performance there. So, you might say, a bookend to this night. And at the time, it was quite unprecedented.

  • @JohnnyMarsden 42 minute ovation???? What!!!

  • Just incredible. Price owns Aida and she is one of the best sopranos ever.

  • I shall never tire of those 11 minutes for as long as I live...

  • My God she's fantastic; and to think she's not even in her prime here.

  • Ah, and here it is.

  • I too remember like it was yesterday. Too far away in NZ for me though and had to rely only on the wonderful recordings she made.

Forever she will remain as my all time favourite, magnificent and regal to the end. No passage of time can dim that spine tingling voice.

  • Awesome!

I remember like it was yesterday!

    Thanks for posting!

    Brent

  • She is 58 years old here right? She is Flawless! The high C is sung more easily than any other singer ever sang it... the legato and phrasing beautiful and so steady...

  • Almost a quarter of a century has passed since this performance. At age 57, this was her 44th Aida at the Met, and certainly not her best. Even so, she rose to the occasion during this taxing aria. Mr. Henahan's review of the performance in the NY Times on January 5, 1985 says it best: "there were powerful reminders of the Price that we remember best and want to remember, a Price beyond pearls. She is, in my view, the greatest American soprano of any age. Bravissima!

  • Henahan's review also characterised her behavior during this ovation as "a master class in the art of the diva."

  • onegin65, .....

    Du bringst viel Glück!

  • My god, she was still good in these years!!!!!

Stopped, not a year to late..in het great great prime.

    Beautiful, but heartbeaking.
