There performing this on my high schools football field. Your right about bands can do music not written for them because the marching band i'm in is doing songs from STYX this year.
Your show kinda sucked though when I saw you guys at the City High competition. Not saying you guys did bad, but there's a difference between good rock to marching arranging and bad rock to marching arranging.
that was awesome, love the Colts. This shows all those stupid kids that I march with in band that you can take a popular song and make it sound good with brass instruments. For some reason, they all think that band (and drum corps) is meant only for classical music and songs written for band.
I never said that it was top quality drum corps. I just said that you can make a popular song and arrange it to where it can sound good with any instrumentation. I agree, it does sound like a college marching band,I just enjoyed the arrangement
Encores aren't supposed to have musicality? WOW, you are a bando. Why would you ever not want to have musicality when you are performing? I understand you want the crowd to have fun but that doesn't you have to sound like a marching band.
They were the Garfield Cadets in the 1980's and early 90's. Then in the mid 90's they moved to Bergen county, calling theirselves the "Cadets of Bergen county" today, still based in Bergen county PA, they just refer to theirselves as the Cadets. Hope this helps
What more do I have to say? I realize that this is what it is and that everyone is having a good time. If the crowd is having fun and the young kids are getting turned on to band then all is well.

That looks like fun and it sounded pretty good...for what it is. Do marching bands ever play softer than ff? And what's up with the conducting? The only thing this guy's left arm is doing is mirroring the right. No wonder there's no dynamics, or any other aspect of musicality beyond notes and rhythm. But it does look fun!

Thanks. Actually, it doesn't really answer my questions as it adds up to being the same philosophy. My questions were more rhetorical and pretty much reflecting my attitude towards this kind of playing. Blastissimo and have fun; hardly musical though.
uh, they're not all blasting. theres just a lot of them. can you hear them? they've got good tone quality. its just when you have a lot of people playing, its loud.
Troll? no clue? I have adjudicated music festivals my friend. This playing is definately fun to do; I never suggested otherwise. Sheesh, if you know so much about playing in bands then you have to be aware that composers such as Swearingen, Saucedo, or Robert W. Smith ask for a little more attention to the subtleties than we are getting here.
I have played in bands like this and had fun doing it. I never said otherwise. Rock on!
Hate to break it to you, but unless you know another one, Saucedo writes this kinda stuff, too. He writes for the Cavaliers. Pretty cool, check them out some time and you'll notice a quite few similarities to the Colts.
It's not the arrangement that I'm dissing. In fact, I'm really regretting the focus of my first entry as I think people are really coming down on me for something I didn't mean to be so harsh. Bad wording and, if you'll pardon the pun, "tone" on my part. I'm doing a couple of Saucedo charts with my junior band right now. Check out Into the Clouds...not that hard to play and it sounds great!
Perhaps you should check out the "Colts 2007 Hornline" video under the "More From" section. A bit more refined, a bit more dynamic, and yes, a bit more in-your-face drum corps. >:D
Dude, this is an encore. Its not supposed to be musical, its for blasting the crowd so they can have a good time. The real musicality comes on the field during competition. Check out a real DCI show. Not to mention the Colt Cadets are playing with the colts here and they are all really young even for an open class corps
hhahaha, that one short contra player

Cool stuff. Woulda been more awesome if you gave the sops that wicked cool guitar solo though. haha. Won't they love that.

still a good performance tho
jmaste2 3 years ago
wow, this could have been cool, had The Cadets of (Whatever county they are now in PA) (Garfield County?) would have handled this 10 times better
jmaste2 3 years ago
But at least the Colts don't TALK over a performance!
What is with that little tiny contrabass?
If that an old g/d Getzen contra?

This isn't a marching band, at least not in the details, which I think should answer your questions...

Merry Christmas to you too. Maybe if we both look hard enough we can find a band like this hammering out Silent Night.

saucedo? doesnt he teach carmel high school??

Yeah, same guy, unless I'm very much mistaken. Take a look at 2001 Carmel HS and 2002 Cavies. The similarities are stunning. Lol.

oh yeah.. i remember hearing saucedo at grand nats. and it was with carmel.. i knew he wrote for cavis tho.
