I think it had something to do with praying and honoring all the people that were lost in the tornado that occurred a few weeks back. A character named Babe died, she was a mother. Then Kendall (Bianca's sister) was hurt. Bianca gave birth to the baby and so on and so forth.
Mertle passed in real life and they wanted a moment of silence to her without actually scripting it. It was also the 10,000 episode for the writer of AMC Agnes Nixon.
