  • It is extremely difficult to find out any information concerning the obscure soul-singer Ella Washington. What little is known is that she was born in Miami, Florida. She seemingly started recording 45-RPMs in 1966 and stopped by 1971 or 1972 (seemingly never to record a full-length LP of her own). She did have an R&B top 40 hit in early 1969 with, "He Called Me Baby", her only chart appearance.

  • I used to listen to this late at night on WLAC...Way down South in Dixie...with John R.

    What memories.....

  • Dang I keep finding deeper and deeper versions of this song! I LOVE it! And this is my favorite!

  • I agree that no one does this song as well as Ella Washington. I used to listen to this on WLAC late and night.....What a great singer and what a great song.....and what great memories of John R and Hoss Allen on WLAC!

  • Respond to this video... great version of this song--very gospel

  • @kidm96 patsy cline recorded it just before she died.

  • ella washington is a pastor now

  • ok..I've listened to everyone's version and I have come to the conclusion that nobody sings it better than anyone else...it's just an awesome song!!! NO MATTERS WHO SINGS IT!!!

  • I was ravin' about Candis version one on another link but this one is very nice indeed.

  • Love this version. Ella's voice holds so much passion.

  • Ella really rocked this song. I remember listening to this when I was just begining to date.

  • From Wikipedia:

"She Called Me Baby," composed by Harlan Howard during the early 1960s, had been recorded by many country artists, including Bobby Bare, Glen Campbell, Mickey Gilley, Ferlin Husky, Waylon Jennings and Howard himself.

Several female vocalists also covered the song as "He Called Me Baby" (with slightly adjusted lyrics to fit the female perspective). The singers were from diverse genres, including Patsy Cline, Jessi Colter, Ella Washington and Candi Staton.

  • @SilverCreedWolf THANKS FOR THE KNOWLEDGE YET THIS IS SOULFUL...

  • Tennessee Ernie Ford originally did this song

  • @thetwins76 like u said ernie did this song but one damn thing for sure he could not sing it

  • Who did the first version ?

  • First impression was Country Song!

    Great Soul Rendition!

Solomon Burke and Ray Chas loved Country!

  • This got a 1968 Grammy nomination for R&B Female, but lost out to Aretha Franklin with "Chain of Fools".

  • This is the best version i ever heard from this song!

  • Who wrote and recorded this originally?

  • Ansawdd!

  • o man its sounds so good

  • charley rich has a great rendition . but this gal reaches down deep into your soul and just pulls your heart out.

  • ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL!!! Love lost songs are so huntingly beautiful!!! Lenny Wm "Cause I love You", etc!

  • Thanks for the tribute while she's alive(?)

On Ella: When I was a kid, I'd would get her mixed-up with Candi Stanton(that's when I lost her 45-RPMs). Nonetheless, one can't dispute that the mark of a great artist (espec. one that is "unsung"-ha!)is that artist can resonate with 'tween listeniners as much as "pop" or "bubblegum". So, can you imagine that kids can(in my neighborhood and culture) can become fans of an adult Blues\R&B\TORCH-SONGTRESS? Like we knew from torch songs. Analyze that!

  • I've been looking for this jam for mad long. Thanks for posting. CLASSIC Baby Making at it's best.

  • fantastic

    thankyou xxx
