ok i just read the description so it was somewhat fair but you did not use the mesa 5 band eq i personally think mesa boogie destroys marshalls when it comes to rock and metal just depends on the sound you want .marshalls are a treble midrange amp mesa's are mid to low end amp.
Not a fair comparison jmp with 2x12 74 super bass with 4x12 mesa mark iv with 1x12 cmon level the playing field do all heads through the 4x12 and the mesa will crush everything there but then again it all depends on what sound you want,
I think I prefer the super bass tone not as compressed or distorted but lots of punch and girth .I have a50watt JMP bass head and a dual rectifier so I may just be partial to the super bass tone
@jacklovesmanutd not sure what your budget is but a JCM 900 or 600 will get you there, Oasis used 900s live so that would definitely work :) If they are too expensive, maybe checkout a Marshall valvestate.
what's the song you're playing? all of these amps sound sweet, in their own way - 2203 is kinda to middy for my taste, but it would probably sound better with other cab. cheers!
Please put a Shure SM57 in front of one speaker in your quad, plug it into a $50 Behringer desk and run it into the line input of your computer. Then we can actually hear a good sound instead of your computer's mic distorting.
I opened the video in two windows at once and put the mesa and the 2203 in a duet. It was hard to find the synch but after you find it it's pretty cool. It was almost like a "Slash and Izzy" rhythm part.
@Gyro911 I think thats because he wanted test them with equal gain, the mark lead is way over the top compared to most marshall amps and thats why I love them :-D the only thing wrong with marshall amps is that they're not mesa boogies lol
The 2203 sounds very much like the record, but I keep coming back to this video to listen to the bass spec..it just has that subtle touch and break up and vintage vibe the others seem to lack.
I like all the Marshalls, I have 3 Mesa's also, I love the super bass, They are a stickyer sounding amp.Lots of Juice and Meat,I had a 70's 50 watt jmp bass. I have an 80's master and a 70's 4 input. The bass would get all fuzzy at half volume I loved it sold it and the guy who bought it ruined it. Im gonna go get it back from him. I had changed two resistors and made it a lead , and the Thing went CRAZY!!! Thanks man sounded great
i think the 2203 is the best in terms of overall sound. All the harmonic overtones are supported in the Marshall. THe Mesa lacks upper freqs and focuses more on bottom end, but you can always add that in, but you can't add what isn't already there. THe Super bass sounds boring to me in overtones.
I think the 2203 is a better amp but it really depends how you define 'better' You really should try it out before you trade because they are VERY different amps
@lfscrazy hear I am a year later still thinking about that 2203 lol. I've learned that "better" to me, means more recognizable and favorable tones on tap... to my ear. versatility.
@lfscrazy here I am a year later still thinking about that 2203 lol. I've learned that "better" to me, means more recognizable and desirable tones on tap... to my ear. versatility. The sparkley high's and crunch is just so addictive!
@B2Rockin Put it this way.... I have sold the Mesa and Super Bass. I replaced them with a JCM800 2204 and JMP 1959! The 2203 is still my fav. I'm sure you wouldn't be dissapointed with a JMP and you can always sell it again for the same or more money. I made another video of it with a much better camera. HTH!!

Wouldnt trade my 1978 JMP 2204 for nothin (except maybe a 1959RR :))
pinkypimpalicous 1 year ago
1. You're using differenct size cabinets for each amp. Of course Mark IV with 1x12 cab does not match the sounds with marshall 4x12...
2. Its recorded with videocamera, doesnt do justice to any amps.
3. Poor quality audio & video

@laitela01 not using a 1x12, read the description, camera is crap

The 2203 sounded the best here only because you didnt put the mark IV on the lead channel but on its rythem channel that

For the boogie, reverse the settings you have for treble and presence.
elpelotero 2 years ago
Pretty much, although I keep my presence no higher than 1.5 on any of the three channels of my IV.

The Super Bass sound Great!
Also Mesa it's a great amp, and the 220 have the classic beautiful tone, but for me the S.B. give the best.

Great comparison. I'd definitely go for the Mesa: so tight!
The Super Bass is too nosy for me, and the 2203 too sharp.

I'd say the Super Bass is the clear winner here. If you really want good tone - sell all of them and get a Guytron GT100.
