Also, my Mom worked at a resturant and the restaurant tried to donate several TONS--literally--of food, but the homeless shelter rejected it because it wasn't completely fresh!

I would blame Obama and his handouts for engendering this sense of mega-entitlement, but this happened even BEFORE Obama's reign!

Well, the E-Waste is because people want to get rid of the old computers and toys. I actually donated a whole computer to a homeless shelter, and they started bitching that it wasn't a brand new model. I'm sorry, maybe the OTHER benefactor(s) who give them a free computer would give them a top-of-the-line one!

Perhaps due to their ingratitude, noone else gave them a new computer. And I was dis-inclined to repeat that particular mistake!

There are even some who say recycling ITSELF is a waste, because you spend more energy getting something useful out of trash than you do mining anew--and of course, you need to be more careful when melting down multiple substances with varying melting/evaporation points.

I haven't heard much new on the nanotech front, and people are kind of scared of tech in America, whether from cost or from action movies from Terminator on down giving it a bad name...

Remember what I said earlier that America has regulations to make businesses stay environmentally safe, but other countries don't bother?

China and/or Africa are where the companies usually run off to. They don't care about the environment, as long as they get the money.

Africans and Chinese actually handle molten lead without Hazmat gear...Remember the recent Mattel subcontractor scandal?

A company in California can take old tech apart safely, but not as profitably as China/Africa!

We rely on the machines for a comfortable living--and in some cases to live at all!

Not just the obvious of hospital machines, but more subtle dependency like tractors. 70% of America's oil goes to farms, rather than cars, makeup, or even plastics! (Despite the b(r)est efforts of Hollywood bimbos)

If we cut back on the farming, more people will starve.

Also, plastics could make settling the ocean floor a temporary solution...

And if you take it more literally, technocrat means technology in charge, which is NOT a bad thing, certain action-movies aside!

Yes, they're paid to stay poor--and to keep breeding, which makes MORE poor people, so those of us who "can afford to" pay, will have to pay MORE to keep them all alive!

It's literally rewarding a BAD thing.

You do not make progress by handouts and welfare. Not only is this degrading, but it also makes them welfare-dependent instead of self sufficient and autonomous.

Unless that's the idea? Make everyone government-dependent serfs?

Technology doesn't always ruin the natural world, BUT it's more expensive to make it clean, so if one country passes laws to force them to clean up their act, they'll just move to another country without such annoying restrictions, and That Country will call us chumps for caring about the planet rather than maximizing profits.

Why do they get to play the leech and simply laze around, sucking the life from a superior organism while that organism must work harder and harder to maintain itself?

Of course, that accusation should also go to the rich who are being "generous" with the "unlimited" funds of the taxpayers, but the poor ARE being opportunistic, and "advocacy" groups have fought any attempt to reduce or eliminate welfare.

Obama ALSO ended the Welfare to Work proviso, so Welfare-leeches can leech for LIFE now!

Actually, that's EXACTLY how I described it on another thread: The fact that taxes pay welfare literally makes us slaves to the "poor" who choose to STAY poor.

I know that sounds backward, but think about it: IF you are working longer and harder and seeing no extra benefits from it, BUT the other party is benefiting from YOUR work, then you are their slave, de facto, if not de juro!

Also, our local utilities co. has tacked on a surcharge to people who don't use ENOUGH utilities, claiming it's to help pay for poor people who can't afford their utilities. This seems dubious, because it's an INVOLUNTARY surcharge, and not attached to the people who use TOO MUCH, it's attached to the people who don't use enough!

More importantly, if it was meant for the poor, they could make it voluntary, like the shamrocks or "Round Up for the Hungry", etc.

And moreover, why bail them out at all, rather than let Darwin's Will Be Done? That was part of the allure of deregulation: Successful entities would BUYOUT--not BAIL out--unsuccessful entities. Bailouts simply reward incompetence--and look what they did with the money afterward. Other than the lavish parties, a lot went to bonuses of the people who made stupid policy mistakes in the first place!

Actually, Clinton forced banks to make loans to minorities who couldn't afford it, labeling their past payment delinquency a "racial trait". It was legally considered "discrimination" then, NOT to loan to people who wouldn't pay it back. So it came as no surprise that welshers welshed on their debts.

But Bush didn't bail them out, Obama did. Bush has been pegged as an idiot, albeit a straightforward idiot, so do you really think he delayed bailing them out to lay the blame on Obama?

While we could argue the merits and demerits of kicking people off land to create a country on it, let's focus on the present. We're ALL addicted to the technology that keeps us alive, but its administrators are now jacking up the prices and essentially, the system that sustains us is slowly killing us.

Whether we blame Obama or not, what can we do about it?

America DOES seem to be going from Land of the Free to Land of the Handouts/Bailouts. It is for good reason that Obama is nicknamed the Handout President!

As to "free country", that might be the problem: Mistranslation. FreeDOM is NOT the same as FREEBIES!

Yes, we get illegals from elsewhere, but fewer and lower-profile! The first part of being illegal is being undetected!

On my bill it says if I don't pay and my services are shut off, I will have to pay $ 181.01. to get it reconnected, so who can these people on the rez where the power is produced being paying so much more than I do?

Actually, from what I've been reading lately, a tribe in South Dakota sued Mount Rushmore out of the hands of the Government, but failed to pay taxes on it, so the IRS owns it now.

They are NOT part of the Government, they're a private Corporation empowered to act on behalf of the Government.

Americans are selling out--figuratively and literally--to foreign powers, so yes, your idea that Indians would sell their land out is probably true.

Maybe going back to living in smaller houses heated by wood fire is the way. But without money, that's not possible either. A few thousand would be "migrating", and that is one thing, but several MILLION illegals indicates something to be TRULY wrong with the "culture" they came from, and they seem reluctant to just jettison it as irrelevant cultural flotsam.
