well kids, in the ye olde times, butchering cattle like this was practiced in every rural village across the world. a cow slaughtered for the celebration of spring was a joyous occasion and i don't even mention the countless beheaded chickens in the backyards, i watched my great grandma kill and cook one when i was at her house and i was like 8 and i was fine. ppl were exposed to this shit all the time. now we have gotten soft and faggy, an animal dying is the worst possible thing now, lol
The ritual came from the Ifugao tribe, who lives in the northern, mountainous areas in my country. It's strange that they used that ritual to superimpose the traditional tribes in the Cambodian riverine areas.
My dad was one of the kids playing beside Marlon Brando in the scene when he reads Time Magazine to Capt. Willard.
The cow killing is just bad because we can see it. If we don't see it we don't care, even though we know it is ten times worse, and done on a scale practically unfathomable to us...
The hypocrisy that characterises the responses of animal lovers to scenes such as this is breathtaking. Notwithstanding the naive but, admittedly, beautiful view of an all utopian cross species society, screaming murder for this is akin to people worrying about street crime when something mundane like diabetes causes tenfold more harm.

I love this scene. The Doors's (one of my favourite bands) The End really makes this scene all the more incredible. Those four lines are chilling. And I'm only 14 and I love this film.

@usenixuser Good point. It's that congreess and gov't that refuses to remove the real threats. They need them just like Big Brother needed "Goldstein".
Definitely on my top 3 of best movies ever made. Willard had orders to kill Kurtz and he saw his friends been slaughter by him... but after all, Willard didn't kill Kurtz because he hated him. He killed him, because Kurtz wanted to.
"The horror... The horror." Brando was paid 75,000 just so he can stay an extra hour just so he can say the last line. you know you're good when you paid 75,000 to say four words.
@yeaarrghh What's wrong with PETA? They seem to protect the rights of animals who can't defend themselves. How would you like to have your balls cut off without anesthesia? Perhaps you like being skinned alive? Just because we have a bigger brain, doesn't mean we can abuse animals like that.
@thebroodhn The sacrifice was going to happen anyway, they just included it in the film. Its normal for the natives to kill animals, and to eat animals. it was a random thing that the slaughtering of the cow hapened that day, they just filmed it and put that into the movie, so where is the problem?
off course its not right to kill animals for a movie and i really abhor that too, but if it happens on a normal way its ok for me you know? its just normal life for them.

yeah i have to agree despite the fact that im a total wuss when it comes to strong movies, i really liked this one. It kept me on the edge the whole time. I would watch it again any time. The only part that was kind of iffy for me was the bull being slaughtered, and obviously the deaths of the men on the boat.
They got away with filming it being slaughtered despite animal protection laws because it was part of a religious ritual being performed by real natives.
You can slaughter a cow on camera as long as you pretend that God wants you to do it.
But you can't slaughter a cow for art because.... IT'S OBSCENE!
You tell me. Coppola probably saw it as "the natives are going to kill the cow anyway. It's part of their culture and a natural process. Let's film it because it's fucking intense and symbolic of the buddha-like Kurtz being slaughtered.
It all depends on how far you're willing to go for art as a person, and how much you prioritize animals. Lots of movie directors are willing to go that far for art, and I feel like it's acceptable. Death is unstoppable anyhow.
Well put; I certainly see the symbolism and I see what you are getting at. Would I go as far as calling it art? No, probably no. That being said, can you justify doing this, lighting cats on fire, etc because of religious reasons? No. So really neither reasons makes sense to me, but after all, I eat plenty of animals, so I can't (nor AM I really) complain.
If you want to kill a cow thats fine, but I wouldnt try to classify it as art.
@Npowell01 I partly agree with you. Eventhough the slaughtering is horrible and primitive, it's quite possible that the whole life of this animal was way better than what we nowadays offer to animals in the "meat-factories".
Our slaughter proces is better, the way we treat cows and pigs (for production) is way worse. "We" are smart enough to hide it from the public view, making it look less worse.
The cow did not die FOR the film. It's b-roll footage from a ceremony that was shot by the Director near the same location they were shooting the film. He just ended up using it. Those people were not paid to kill the cow for this movie, that cow was going to be chopped up in front of a camera or not either way. So chill out.

I saw this movie for the first time two years ago, and our English teacher played it for us on the last day of school for our senior year. This is without a doubt one of the best movies ever made.
@johnbourbon why is his teacher a goof I would like to see more teachers play movies like these for the kids instead of trying to train them to be pacifists.
yeah i read the book first and it was great, i also recomend watching a bit of the documentary on the making of this movie. The director used a lot of his own money to make this film
@Theburn77 Yeah, it was a real bull. The tribe in the Phillippines where they filmed this movie ritualistically killed bulls in this manner, so Coppola filmed it. There were no laws against it over there. However, it pissed off the Humane Society.
@6161andysa the humane society has no say in someone else's culture. they have been ritually killing water buffalo for a long time before the humane society was created. but this was a good scene, good imagery
No. The End is the song right at the beginning of the movie. I was talking about this sing, in this vid. Does anyone know this song? But thank you anyway WuTang :)
Also an interesting point is that in the end when Wilard stands in front of Kurtz' people his face is hald in shadow. I think that symbolizes the two paths which he can decide at this moment: replacing Kurtz or go back along the river. In the normal ending you see that Kurtz headquater gets destroyed. In the Reduy version you don't see that which me think is a way better ending because its more open.
I read in an interview with Coppola that the airstrike at the end wasnt intended to be a part of the plot, and that he had put it in the end as completely seperate from the film. I think he talks about it in the DVD commentary.
Redux has a better ending in my opinion too. As Kurtz is killed and willard 'becomes the new leader'' (le roi es morte, vivre le roi) he trows away his gun on the stairs. When moving down you see everyone unloading their gun and trow it away as well. As if their war - their way of life with Kurz died as wel and they 'surender'. So from this point of view the bombing would be an overkill.

One of the all time greats. I feel bad for anyone who is watching the ending without seeing the rest. You don't know what you're missing.

I saw this movie for the first time two years ago, and our English teacher played it for us on the last day of school for our senior year. This is without a doubt one of the best movies ever made.

@johnbourbon why is his teacher a goof I would like to see more teachers play movies like these for the kids instead of trying to train them to be pacifists.

yeah, it does

In case you're now aware, this film was loosely based on Joseph Conrad's book "Heart of Darkness". It is worth reading too, if you like the film.
zapatistathistle 1 year ago 2
yeah i read the book first and it was great, i also recomend watching a bit of the documentary on the making of this movie. The director used a lot of his own money to make this film

Yes it was .
icanmyshoetie 1 year ago
wow, how times have changed. If a goldfish dies in a movie now you'll have PETA all over the fucking place.

"We had PETA or some animal thing on the phone inquiring on how we were treating our mosquitoes. I'm serious."

jesus christ, thats fucking sad
Theburn77 1 year ago
@Theburn77 Yeah, it was a real bull. The tribe in the Phillippines where they filmed this movie ritualistically killed bulls in this manner, so Coppola filmed it. There were no laws against it over there. However, it pissed off the Humane Society.
6161andysa 1 year ago 14
@6161andysa yeah they gt in a lot of trouble 4 doin that
blablaman233 1 year ago
@6161andysa the humane society has no say in someone else's culture. they have been ritually killing water buffalo for a long time before the humane society was created. but this was a good scene, good imagery

No. The End is the song right at the beginning of the movie. I was talking about this sing, in this vid. Does anyone know this song? But thank you anyway WuTang :)
Sammstein08 1 year ago
Nah man same song just later into it. hahaha i would know i'm a huge fan of The Doors.

Sammstein08 2 years ago 2
*half in shadow
Sammstein08 2 years ago
I read in an interview with Coppola that the airstrike at the end wasnt intended to be a part of the plot, and that he had put it in the end as completely seperate from the film. I think he talks about it in the DVD commentary.
givemealaugh 1 year ago
Redux has a better ending in my opinion too. As Kurtz is killed and willard 'becomes the new leader'' (le roi es morte, vivre le roi) he trows away his gun on the stairs. When moving down you see everyone unloading their gun and trow it away as well. As if their war - their way of life with Kurz died as wel and they 'surender'. So from this point of view the bombing would be an overkill.
