  • Very helpful video and the hat changing was an added bonus.

  • I just sent this vid to a family member who was having problems getting his pilot to stay on. Easier than trying to explain over the phone. I was able to just send him a video tutorial. Thanks for posting.

  • Thanks Pal !

  • thanks you save me 30 bucks of the plummer

  • Thank you for this video. I am a single mom with two teenagers and have limited funds. I called a plummer and the fee to come out to the house was $70. This did not cover the problem. I found this video, went to the store, spent $8 and came home and followed the instructions. I now have hot water again. Thank you very very much.

  • Excellent,Thank you!

  • Thank you, your video was very usefull and it saved me a few money! Thanks again!

  • Thank you.

  • Thank you so much for the video. My new tenants just called and the gas company associate told them I needed a new water heater cause the thermocouple was bad. We fix everything on our own till all options are exhausted. Money is hard to come by and hard to part with unneccesarilly. Home depot has the part for under $10-10 min away plus repair time. Exc ellent information. By the way- I bet if we the Consumer Power appliance repair program in place he would not have said we needed a new one!

  • My pilot still goes out after a couple hours!! Here we go again! Was not the thermocouple!! I wonder if my burner & stuff would come out that easily?? I live in a mobile home & I do not have a visible gas lever near the tank!! In fact I don't know where the hell it is!!!.....As long as control is off, will I be safe????

  • This looks a lot like my water heater. I don't have a manual for it, so I am practically fucked......I will be changing my thermocouple, but more is wrong with heater I do believe.

  • thanks

  • thank you it worked

  • Thank you for this video! I have to do this tomorrow to mine. No one mentioned that this gentleman started off wearing no hat, then had 3 different hats on throughout this video with no cuts. You sir, are a wizard.

  • @ckymeebs AND his hands never left his arms!!

  • Thank you for sharing this tutorial. it was easy and saved me a weekend without hot water - not to mention the money of a service call and repair! i bought the last thermocouple at home depot for about $8.00 and it took about 20 minutes to do the job.

  • Thank u so much for posting.... got major man points... and no arguing for a week.

  • You know, you have to love youtube and the Internet. Your video was awesome. I could not light the pilot light on my hotwater tank. I just replaced the thermocoupling for 9 bucks! Thanks.

  • great video, thanks for the help. $7 and we have hot water again. Still shaking my head that some companies tried to sell me a whole new water heater...they should be ashamed of themselves

  • Thanks so much for this video! Saved me at least a $50 service call. $10 at Home Depot and we're showering again. Generous people and youtube save the day again!

  • Ok this is my problem if anyone can help i would be ever gratefyl.... jus looking for some tips how i can get this fired up.... 'WHY ISN'T MY THERMOCOUPLE SENSING THE HEAT??? IF ANYONE CAN HELP CONTACT ME AT SLIPPERYROCK69@yahoo.com....jus looking for any kind of info before i get a repair man for a simple job....

  • hey everyone, i'm a new dude to this site... i have a simple question and i hope someone can help me! I understand the video about the thermocouple... what i don't understand is that my heater pilot won't stay on and i changed the thermocouple and it still won't stay lit??? i flushed my gas line to make sure no air didn't leak in.... so now i'm at the point where my flame on my piolt light is blue and the thermocouple won't stay lit....

  • @phillydude22 I had this same problem when I changed the thermocouple and the pilot would not stay lit. What ended up working for me was unscrewing the thermocouple from under the gas valve and screwing it right back end. Somehow, if its threaded just right, it won't allow the pilot to stay lit. Now my pilot is on and we have hot water again :)

  • my water heater pilot light has been going out randomly for some time now, I would light it and sometimes it would go right out and other times it would be on for weeks at a time and nothing is more frustrating than waking up to a cold shower. This video was huge help, i bought a thermocouple on sale at Lowes for $6.49 and fixed the water heater in about 10 minutes. consistent hot water, thanks

  • Thanks dude cost me $10.00 for thermocouple at Home Depot and solved the problem.

  • i like his automatic hat at 0.30

  • The newer flamable vapor water heaters are a little bit different. You have to take the inner door assembly off, and make sure all of the wires are connected when put back together. The newer ICON from Bradford White is a lot more complex. The thermocouple is an electrode and connects to the inner door and not to the gas valve.

  • Thank You so much for this video. Single woman, gas company changed meter while I was out, could not re-ignite hot water tank. Gas company wanted $110 to come change thermocoupler. Watched video and did it my self for the cost of the thermocoupler $14. Thank you , thank you , thank you.

  • Thanks alot!! Just saved me 500 bucks and I didn't switch to Geico. Went to The Home Depot, bought the part, installed it as described on your video in less than 30 minuntes! AWESOME, AWESOME, AWESOME! I love YouTube!

  • Thanks so much for the repair video. It was very easy to understand, and I was able to replace my water heater's thermo couple and saved at least $70 to call in a specialist.

  • I wish I would have seen this before I called a rip off plumber who replaced the thermal couple for $70 dollars for 10 minutes of work.

  • Great Tutorial - Thanks this helped me replace The Thermocouple all for $10. Thanks alat

  • Just watched, then fixed my thermocoupling! Hot showers tonight!! Many thanks

  • Yip! this is an awesome video!

I fixed my water heater too, and made a video of it.

check it out, its in my profile..

  • As shown, I had to take the flamer out. This video, therefore, was perfect for my situation. Another video says you should call a technician if the flamer needs to come out. I'm flat broke. Calling a technician is out of the question. I would have to take cold showers.

  • This is why I love youtube. Why spend hours on google search only for crap. Thanks dude!

  • Great video but I noticed when it starts he's not wearing a hat but with his hands never leaving he then has a hat on when the picture pulls back. Great job

  • Thanks mr u the best never done it befor now I am a pro keep it up

  • Dude you rock! Thank you so much for the video!!!

  • FIRST... YOU HAVE TO TURN OFF THE GAS!

  • just don,t kink the thermal tube. It breaks easy and then you have to get another thermal.

  • Thanks so much for this information you're a pro

  • you realy helped me thanks

  • great video sir, much props

  • Nice video. Thank you for taking the time to do it.

  • Awesome video! love it!

I just had to fix my own thermal couple.. i made a video too. Its in my profile. My pilot light was going out and wouldnt stay on. Replacing the thermal couple fixed it..

check out my video in my profile and let me know what you think..

    again.. awesome video.

  • Rheem yr 1999 Gas 30 gal water heater. water heater pilot light works. steady full flame. even will the hot water is not being used. when hot water facuet is turned on water is not coming out of the facuets. warm water cold. could it need a new thermocouple?

  • Hi,

If the pilot flame is on, it is not the thermocouple. If the burner is working and the water is cool, it could be a build up of sediment on the bottom of the tank. Which should be flushed a few times a year. It could also be a broken dip tube that is mixing cold and hot water, cooling it off.

Both fairly easy to fix. Although because of the age of your tank, it might be time to upgrade.

  • @cynthiaj1 Same thing is happening to me now!! Do you remember what the problem was????

  • Thanks man...you're a stud!!!

  • dont forget that when you change a thermocouple that you need to change your hat all every couple of seconds also just to make it right

  • Thanks For this vid! One thing I might add that I missed was to make sure you put the burner back in the cradle or else it will keep blowing out the main and pilot flame (beginner mistake that took me awhile to figure out lol)

  • thanx my handi is going to mad about this

  • thankyou..

  • Na I think you did a very terrific job!Man I go to a HVAC school in the bay area Ca.and youd seriously would be a great teacher.exelent job.

  • Thank you so much for posting this. You saved me a ton of money by showing me how to do it myself. My wife and I moved into our first house together and its over 20 years old. When fall came, we didn't know how to turn on the heater, I then figured out how to light the pilot light, but it kept going out. I didn't know how to remove the thermocouple until I watched this helpful video. Thanks so much!

  • thanks for taking the time to post this! you make it seem easy, but for us beginners it's a little scary...
