Thanks so much for putting this up. Well done. I was so moved when I went to Robben island, and to Victor Verster prison where Mandela walked free. Iconic places in our history. He truly is a great man, and SA does not fully appreciate what a generous spirit Mandela had towards his jailers. To the people posting racist or abusive comments just read "The Long Walk To Freedom", and if you have a heart, you will regret what you said. Dear Mr Mandela I cannot thank you enough for your contribution.

He actually spent 18 of his 27yr sentence on Robben Island. The remainder of his incarceration was on the mainland.

Nelson Madiba Mandela,un uomo,un gigante,che ha riunificato una nazione umiliata dalla vergogna dell'apartheid.Presidente dell'ANC,fuori legge,non lo rinnegò nemmeno in cambio della libertà.Passò 27 anni nel lager di Robben Island,da cui uscì nel 1990.Oggi nel suo Sudafrica iniziano i Mondiali di calcio,sport di cui comprese,insieme al rugby,l'enorme potere di aggregare le 11 etnie presenti nella nazione sudafricana. Non ci sarà ,nella notte una sua nipote di 13 anni è morta.Grazie di esistere!

I just read Nelson Mandela's memoirs "Long walk to freedom". He is in my view one of the most extraordinary people of the 20th century - along with the likes of Gandi and Einstein.

The ill-informed people who talk about him as a "criminal" seem to forget the atrocious crimes committed by the apartheid government for three-quarters of a century.

@whtsavai the "facts" are that Mandela was imprisoned for refusing to bow to racial segregation, a choice which cost him nearly 30 years of his life.
