  • really wish i was still in my home state when this happened... my brother met Derek that night and got a hilarious picture taken with him. It was probably the worst possible picture taken of DT ever. My brother said he was super down to earth and great to chat with, which I've heard from everyone I know who has had the privilege of meeting him. I love Derek Trucks!! Thank you mainesnowrider.

  • Cmon people below, Landreth is NOTHING compared to Derek in terms of technical ability.

  • I'm so happy he has both the courage and the ability to play jazz.

  • this crowd was very bad....so much talking and making noise during the performance...musicians from some cultures find this to be disrespectful and applause should only be given only after the performance.

  • This is basically the exact head of My Favorite Things by Contrane (of course except for Trucks flare). They sound fantastic, holy crap.

  • Why do people talk so much at shows?even this one. all i hear is the low rumble of people talking, happens at every show. its rude and annoying.

  • wow. this is pretty sweet. sounds just like Coltrane's version. with his own unique spin.

  • After seeing so many great players in my lifetime i'm not easily impressed .( i don't wish to sound smug , i'm just bored with the predictable pentatonics) Most guitarists sound very similar, from that Clapton/Hendrix school. THIS young man has my vote every time. Derek T & Sonny Landreth are like a cool, fresh, inspiring breeze. I wish Derek a very long and fruitful career. Thank you mainsnowrider.

  • Agree completely with you on that !

  • I get ya !! Sonny Landreth is the devil!! Derek Trucks is always slipping in a different twist to his playing also! I am glad someone else has heard of Landreth too!!

  • have you not heard Jeff beck? Or Richard Thompson? Wes Montgomery? Django? Sounds like you've only been listening to very few guitarists.

  • @taildragger51 those two are my favorites too!

  • its not video. the only DA publicly available is the 1970 Fillmore show. Much of it is on youtube..search the net for the Gatlinburg tapes..

  • There is a bootleg tape out of Duane Allman and the ABB practicing this. Duane was introduced to jazz and loved miles davis etc. he and the other members recorded this at a practice. i have that and many other rare Duane stuff.

  • so why don't you share them with Me.....I'd love to put it on a DVD

  • I agree that it is not much on the Allman side, except for a few lines where it shows the Southern feel in the background. It sounds a lot more like Frank Zappa where the band holds it together while Frank goes off doing his usual guitar thing.

  • Derek sounds like Coltrane from 3:40 to 3:48 and from 4:49 to 4:51. He uses a legato technique that enables him to imitate the sound of a horn. If you check out his live recordings from 2003, especially Oct. of 2003, he plays huge chunks of solos in that style. Apart from his slide playing, its probably his most impressive contribution to guitar technique.

  • Although I don't particularly like his playing, Allan Holdsworth has been doing that for years and so have many other guitarists! However I do think that his slide technique is pretty original (although Jeff Beck may have done it first, I'm not sure)

  • cant wait to see there musical genious on full display at this years MOUNTIAIN JAM V!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Listen to this and then Allman Brothers "Whipping Post". Notice any similarities?

  • no i dont. the allmans have been a fav band of mine for a long time. but this coltrane masterpiece that trucks is going off of, sounds nothing like allman. i can agree in the sense it goes to the i and ii chord back and forth but the whippin post goes to the III chord in the sense too. and whipping post is in 12/8 as opposed to this song in 3/4.

  • agreed. The intro is in 11/8, and it's really cool how it just changes for the verse, chorus, and solo sections.

  • yes. its a genius piece.although im not a huge fan of cutting off time, like 7/8 or 11/8. but w,e

  • @justinjonesypoo accecpt this is in 3/4

  • im aware of that. i was saying "whipping post" by the allman brothers band, its in 12/8. my favorite things is in 3/4.

  • Beautiful!

  • Cool, you can really hear Ali Akbar Khan in his playing. inspiring.

  • Well, not this song, but maybe some of the songs off of Songlines...

  • Check out 1:20-1:35. Classic Sarod lines and technique. Many other examples as well. Khansahib is incredible.

  • Yeah I'm just noticing that, it sounds great. His style is so unique.

  • i definitely hear what you are saying, i have three of ali akbar khans albums. awesome stuff.

  • This is wonderful, thanks for posting. Listening to this makes think of what Duane Allman & Jimi Hendrix might have gotten into had they lived. Rave on, Derek.

  • I went to this show as well, first time I saw dtb, and the first time i met him

  • Is he one to meet with the fans after the show? I have tickets to see him here in Jax, Fl on 12/27/08 and would like to be able to just say hey (who would'nt?). I have had the chance to chat with members of the "Destroyers" at this venue (Fla Theatre) and hope I get the same opportunity with the DTB.

  • since camden is such a small town the band just kinda walked around town and enjoyed themselves and didnt get hassled. i talked to derek for about an hour the day before the show cuz i was playing guitar on the sidewalk and he just walked up, very very nice guy and very down to earth

  • he jams with ARU from time to time and he burns on some country, i think the date is 2007-05-09 Innsbrook pavilion

  • thanks for the date of the show. its sick!

  • He played this when I saw him it was the best song

  • he did when i saw him

  • i wish he played this when i saw him

    long live trane and derek

  • I saw this live at my school and it was amazing..... anyone and everyone should go see trucks play live

  • and he can do jazz as well, my my my
