One really important thing I haven't seen anyone say something about yet. If you watch the 1st rider they show (I think it's Ryan Nyquist) He goes through that WHOLE COURSE, TOTALLY ON RHYTHM. What I mean is, that after he hits the 1st jump there, he doesn't pedal @ all through the whole course....& I raced BMX, I raced Motocross (from 50cc class up until I was 17 & I was full time into the 125 class from age 12) & riding on all Rhythm is a totally Acquired skill...

There are three reasons. The most common is that it is used to gain speed: you unweight going up the front and push down hard going down the back. Perfect example in Red Bull Elevation 2008 video: the riders bunnyhop the lip of the roller and pump down the other side.

They also help with timing and judging speed. You learn how fast you need to go over the roller in order to make the next gap.

Lastly, they are fun and can be a mental rest between sick gaps.
