  • There's a lot of dedication on top of great love & care put into your editing of this wonderful video & it shows! Anyone around in 1977 probably remembers Dean Friedman's classical quirky song that many folks absolutely LOVED [though many probably refused to admit it]. I went out and bought the 45 almost immediately when it was released and have loved it since. I don't think I ever heard the long version though. It's terrific!

    Thanks for uploading!

  • My name is Ariel(:

  • This is SERIOUSLY the best video I've EVER seen on YouTube, what a magnificent job. This is such a great song and i'm glad it wasn't forgotten. Your video did this song beautiful justice!

  • GREAT video.

  • Im an Ariel!! <33 hahha :D

  • My name's Ariel :3

  • my willy is like a rocket...my girlfriend is over the moon

  • like the video, great images

  • Great video btw

  • Fort McHenry: The Bronx.

  • Ariel's are all awesome :)

  • Back when music was FUN...

  • Great video...love it!

  • I love this song, it was always one of my favourites of Deans. Can't believe i am going to see him tomorrow night :-)

  • Wow! Can't believe I'm still word-perfect on this one after 34 years. Looking forward to seeing Dean at The Ropetackle, Shoreham next week...

  • This has also been stuck in my mind for 30 years. I was a freshman in college when this came out, and to this day I find myself singing "I said 'hi' and she said 'yeah, I guess I yam'..."

  • Best one hit wonder of the 70s, and there is lots of strong competition.

  • @bzzzzap This wasn't a one hit wonder - what about Lucky Stars and Lydia?

  • @scampben Hits in Europe, not here in the US. He was a slightly bigger hit over there than he was here.

  • @scampben -- Maybe in the UK, but those were not hits across the pond.

  • I am SO GLAD I found this wonderful song!!!! I remember back in the 70's WPDH used to play this ALL THE TIME, and I loved all the references to "real things" back then (including the Paramus Park waterfalls - it used to be my favorite mall!! - oh yeah and peasant blouses . . . ha haaa!! So, yeah, when I see The Little Mermaid THIS is what goes through my head!!! THANKS for posting!!

  • i haven't heard this song in years thanks for posting!!

  • Absolute bollocks. WHY?

  • This song reminds me of "Punk Rock Girl" by The Dead Milkmen.

  • And very nice touch to play with the vertical hold at the appropriate juncture!

  • Very cute and loving video homage to this catchy tune..Thanks!

  • omgleek!this song really brings out the nostalgia!still love as much now as then!ty!and im still just as cool...lol.

  • wow where has this amazing melody been hiding my whole life

  • The Ariel I sing Ariel da Wariel too is not Jewish :)

  • My gf's name is ariel and she's amazing but not Jewish :/ lol w.e I still love her

  • What a flashback. I always wondered, why would a Jewish girl sing Ave Maria?

  • @rainsgirl1889 Because Maria was a good Jewish mother? - i'm thinking

  • My best friend's name is Ariel, she lives in New Jersey, and she is Jewish! Coincidence?, I think not!

  • How many Ariel like this song ?

(my name is ariel too :p)

  • My names ariel! =) It makes me happy cause its just like me.

  • Fab song! I'd forgotten. Thanks for jarring my memory!

  • OMG!! The memories! Thank you soooooo much!!

  • My friend is related to dean freidman, and she is just like the girl in the song and is also named ariel...its pretty awesome

  • @96cesgirl dean was living in manhattan in the 80s they took the warterfall out of paramus park a woman was abducted from paramus park raped and murdered the paramus police are cowards

  • One of the best edits to a great song you'll find anywhere on YouTube

  • this reminds me of my dad

  • Yeah, that does look like Kevin Tighe at 2:36. Most remember him from Emergency, but I remember him being a main stay in John Sayles films... most notably "Matewan" and as Sport Sullivan in "Eight Men Out." Someone posted that this was from an episode of The Monkees back in the '60s.

I believe this came out in the summer, '77. I was in the Navy, graduating from OS "A" school and headed for my ship in the Western Pacific. Great memories this song brings back.

  • i was nameed after this song..my mom heard it when she was growing up and decided to name her first girl arielle (at least thats how we spell it)

  • my name's ariel, this is pretty cool.

  • Hey Folks, I'll be doing a US gig at the Turning Point, Piermont, NY on Sunday, May 22nd 4:00pm. Tickets and info on my main homepage DeanFriedman (you know where) See you there! Dean

  • dean friedman did write some great songs

  • Really nice video with some great clips ... fellow actor, Kevin Tighe ("Emergency"/"Roadhouse") ... awesome tune from my childhood .... this one has it all! Thank You! Dave Lounder

  • WHY do I like this song so much??

  • yeah, they cut out the jewish girl part in the u.k./ go figure!/ & the onion rings! me & my fellow pals were at nathans havin a hotdog when we first heard this! but ariel didnt eat meat!

  • Come back Dean to the Mouth of the Tyne Festivale. we think you can rock it at the mouth of the Tyne Festivale.. We will sing You can thank your lucky stars. As well as your other songs...Hope to see you in July this year

  • My Mom went to school with Dean. I emailed him and he immediately wrote back. Seems like a great guy. =)

  • also had this on a 45 , as a fifteen year old growing up in the uk, i used to keep it seperate from my punk stuff in case my mates found it!!! still brings back memories of summers gone by, love it

  • My daughter thinks I'm really lame because I told her I named her Ariel because of this song. (And of course the Shakespeare character in The Tempest!) Hey at least I didn't name her after a goddamn Disney Character!

  • @MissezPremise Aw, don't knock The Little Mermaid. I'm sad to say my middle name is Ariel and it's thanks to Disney, and my mom allowing my six- and seven-year-old siblings to chose it.

  • @partytimepigeon Oh I love the name no matter where it came from. I just got so tired of people, upon hearing my daughter's name, saying, "Oh, like the Little Mermaid"? And when I'd mention Shakespeare & Dean Friedman they'd be like, "Who?" Oh well!!

  • @MissezPremise

hey! My bro named me after the disney character Ariel and I'm not at all hurt or insulted when someone goes all "Oh! like the little mermaid?"

  • @xarchanx Your *brother* named you? That's unusual. OK then. Cool.

  • @MissezPremise

Yeah he was about 4 when I was born haha

  • my name is ariel... im a guy... feel like... im about to go this to all of my friends LOL

  • i saw Dean i think 77 in Glasgow, saw him again Edinburgh 2 years ago his music was so not the bay city rollers. still love him sang the female bit of lucky stars with him

  • aaaaaaaaarrrrrriiiiieeeeeellllll...lol thats meeeeeee haha

  • I could go the rest of my life and not find 7 people who know what I'm talking about when I mention this song, but it stands at 75,523 viewings.THIS is why I watch youtube. Can't tell if this is an official 70s video or a recent edit, don't care.As a clip maker and trivia junkie,I LOVED this. But(around 2:10)MIND THE BABY!Not fair that he had hits in the U.K.and I'm stuck. Thanks much for this.

  • I like the TR4 @ 4:21 ;-)

  • @mctim64

    make that 3:59 :-P

  • I took her home with me. We watched some TV. Annette Funicello and some guy goin' steady. (HONK! HONK!)

  • @jscullin3 - "I started fooling around with the vertical hold, we got the munchies and I made some spaghetti".

Is that a reference to what happened after he "found the softness of her mouth" and they "made love to bombs bursting" ?

  • Wow! This is a very different song from the record I bought in Britain in 1977. Most of the ethnic references were cut. Ariel was just a "young" girl. No onion rings or pickles, or not eating meat. Is this the U.S. single? Or an album track? Whatever--it's great.

  • I love this. so cute

  • my mom named me after this song :)

  • my name is ariel, and i adore this song :)

  • I heard this on the radio on the way home to day and laughed out loud i loved it so much. I'm a teen btw so this was my first time ever hearing the song. I loved it so much i had to come and find it on youtube.

  • great oldie !

  • tears on my pillow and I've ...amenorrhea?

  • @MajorSecord LMFAO it's Ave Maria.

  • My name is Ariel... And i choose to think this song is about me..hahahaha :)

  • @Sugarlips1595 My name is Ariel too :D I love this song just because of my name

  • Some cool memories in the video clips to this song ... what a simpler, more fun, more loosened up time. Now, just strips of celluloid, old recordings, and distant memories...

  • my girlfriends name :) ahhhh i love her

  • Thanks for the memories!

  • hummm good video :) I enjoy it!

  • @pacificoaster It's catchy? It's jiggy? It's awesome? It mentions pickles? :)

  • @pacificoaster Maybe because it's a bloody classic!?

  • @pacificoaster That happens to me too. Probably it's because a lyric in the song triggers a memory of something that happened in your life some time.

  • my name is ariel :D this song kinda fits me too

  • Not a one hit wonder! I have the album - Deli Song! I adore Dean Friedman

  • Not a one hit wonder! Great album! I adore Dean Friedman!

  • My mom has the 45 and absolutely loves this song!!! She wishes there was someway u could put it on ITunes so she could put it on her ipod. Great song!!!

  • That chorus is a direct lift of The Hollies Carrie Anne, and I love it!

  • Great song!!! Came out in April '77'. The first time I heard it, I ran out, got the 45 and almost wore it out. The video was cute. Good choice for the song. :D

  • just AWESOME

  • 1 hit wonder. Hit #26 in Billboard. God bless!

  • @DaveWollenberg Yeah. The song's vibe and lyrics were probably a little too clever for most people in the day..

  • @DaveWollenberg Also Lucky stars and Lydia hit in uk, not a one hit wonder then.

  • @HORACECOPE2 1 hit wonder here in the STATES. God bless!

  • unique vocals.

  • this guy still tours believe it or not mostly in the uk but he is playing in piermont ny in may according to his web site.

  • My name is Ariel...

  • me too!

  • I have been singing this song in my head for years and years but I haven't heard it again until tonight. I love this song!

"I picked her up in my new VW van

She wore a peasant Blouse with nothin' underneath

    I said "Hi"

She said "Yeah, I guess I am"

    Ariel Ariel"

    GREAT!!!

  • My names arielle :D

  • my name was supposed to be arielle

    my dad spelled it wrong

    So I'm just Ariel.

    He still says it Arielle

    I hate it -.-

  • I love this song. It's so funny. Thank you so much for posting.

  • thought this was Neil Sedaka when it first came out

  • is that Kevin Tighe from Emergency at 2:35 ? ( the bar owner in Roadhouse)

  • Great spot! It's a clip from a 1967 educational film called "Narcotics: Pit of Despair". It appears to be Kevin's first credited role.

  • @abmcw I thought that was Kevin ("Emergency"/"Roadhouse")! Would love to be in a film with him and hang out! Dave Lounder

  • @fatelvis85 Is it me, or does young Kevin Tighe look a lot like young Matt Damon?

  • @fatelvis85 I thought the very same thing about that actor being Kevin!

  • great song....well done video.

  • Alot of thought to many frames. Good representation. HE/She had some cash for film.

  • Just starting and it's a great vid

  • Cool , clever video, and a great track! 5*****

  • Billy Joel influenced by this ? I would think so.

  • billy joel was out before this dude !!

  • A lot of care and attention in this montage. Compliments to the chef.

  • This song came out my senior year in High School. I owned it on 45 and loved it. :)

  • great song,i'm glad i found it.makes me feel old though

  • this is the original song as i owned the 45. its amazing how people find these songs people forgot about for 30 years. i was still a virgin when this song came out LOL

  • memories

  • hehe,,I remember this song,,,grew up in Fort Lee, NJ,,,kewl !!! xox

  • why is this song not available on itunes?? or am I just not finding it?

  • Is this original? I remember it being much slower and the "ariel" bit much higher?

  • This is the original. BTW, that "ariel" in the background couldn't be sung any higher than that (LOL)

  • cooool!

  • this is great. who did the video??? great job!!! very impressive.

  • This Song has mai Name in and it is spelled exactly like that

  • Your name is Annette Funicello?

  • Heard this twice today on XM/Sirrius satellite radio

    channel 7, the 70's channel

  • heard this twice on the radio as well recently.LOVE IT ! He is coming to Edinburgh soon so I hope to go & see him all thanks to the radio ;)

  • i never knew there was a song with my name in it until now lol

  • There is also another song that has your name in it to it is called ariel by Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow.

btw my name is also Ariel

  • They played this song today at noon on 93.7 Mike FM in Boston.

  • And on BBC radio 2 on wednesday 24th around 3 in the afternoon.

  • heard this on Radio 2, had to search for it.

  • Same here, I thought it sounded like Frankie Valli. Took me ages to find it.

  • Yes, then Ken Bruce played it on the morning of 08/07/09 and Steve Wright played it in the afternoon! Love it - never got tired of it. Great lyrics.

  • If you remember the "vertical hold", you've got a few years on you. The lyrics are so refreshing and different. A real one-of-a-kind song.

  • also, i think the full import of the "bombs bursting in air" reference must be lost on many listeners today. do any tv stations sign off anymore? if so, is the "star spangled banner" still obligatory?

  • This song is great and the video is fantastic as well. Thanks a lot. Kind of a forgotten one here.

  • Indeed somewhere between Billy Joel and Frankie Valli, and quite a good song. This song is a regular feature on Music Choice TV's 1970s channel, and that's where I first heard it. As another comment said, the near-hit with the car @ 2:10 was disturbing, but everything else was great. BTW, one of my TVs still has vertical hold.

  • I meant..

I love the name Ariel. It's gorgeous.
