  • And the high street would still look as lovely as that today if it weren't for all the cars...

  • I was born and bred in Stevenage. It's a very, very well designed town with amenities, parks etc but has just become a little run down in parts and always suffered from lack of character. My parents as two young professionals moved into St Nicholas in 1976 and the street was full of young teachers, nurses etc. They have long since moved away to a different part of the town, and now the street is mainly benefit claimants and looks very, very shabby indeed.

  • Ironic how all the up and coming decent looking towns are now horrendous dumps. Why people change stuff i do not know, it may look good in the long run but it never is.

  • I lived there from the age of 4 in '71 until i moved away in 1985, the best years of my life were there 1980-1985, the girls, the drugs, the fights on friday nights in the old town when it was a no go area for the police, hanging around the fountain on saturday afternoons drinking merrydown cider aged 16

and my friends...Dove, Ratty, Sniks,,,where are you guys now, oh for those wasted days we spent wasted on mushrooms, puff and speed

Not forgetting all my ex girlfriends..how i loved you.

  • my mum is in this video twice

  • my dad helped build stevenage in the 1950's, was a landmark town.

  • I have no regrets being raised there, went to camps hill then collenswood then on to mander college in bedford. Best education at the time and enabled me to travel worldwide and do and achieve in whatever I chose to do. People cant do that now

  • my cousin was the sensei at the shotokan karate club. had to have balls to be raised there and a certain amount of school pride. i was a memeber of the boxing club held at the swimming pool gym

  • oh yeah great ashby built over the fields and the farm house of my childhood...what is it they say 'unspoilt by progress' my arse

  • i moved to stevenage a year before this video was made aged 2, and loved the place especially when i hit 14-19, Ted the grass, The mighty Horse, the fights with Hitchen...oh happy memories, also my first true love lived in lincoln road........

  • cheeky; big up stevenage !

  • got to love stevenage <3

  • Here we go round the mulberry bush film made in 1967 around stevenage starring barry evans! Great film check it out!

  • This video has made me feel very sad, whatever has happened to the stevenage that was?? is it the town that has changed or is it the people??

  • Quality footage. Whatever happened to the Night Hawks? Had forgotten all about them.

  • fuck me stevenage looks so colourful in this...

  • brilliant footage, well done.

  • OMG! I've just seen my old chemistry teacher!

  • and what is with all the dodgy teeth lol

  • omg what the hell was that little girl eating ? a nuked potato lol

  • Fond memories, I was 9 back then, Stevenage was a great town to grow up in during the 70's. I went to school there and got my first job at 17 in the town centre. All that industry now long gone from Gunnells Wood.

    Much better then than now.

  • @GoldhunterUK Indeed, and now central govt will complete comercial plans made 30 years ago and expand west of the A1. . They have already built great ashbey. and I think that should be seen as an example of whats comming next.

With West a1 and GA, the town will double in population but unlike the 40tys development, there are no new schools motorways or train stations to facilitate the expansion. The other difference is that these are middle class homes not working class. A scary twist.

  • @Quasime42 It's Great Ashby and coming only has one m!

  • All those factories have gone now ,the old town ruined by the one way system and the town centre is a dump. Almost unrecognisable from 40 years ago

  • Hi just watched this and i am the little girl in the blue dress going to nursery.

    I knew this existed somewhere!!!!

  • Thousands of single mums, dads missing, crappy family life. Thats where it starts

  • Wow you got to love the boy hitting the table with the axe, made me smile. Bracknell looks much the same as Stevenage.

  • Great place until the Chavs ruined it

  • 9:27 - Mr who............? lol

  • This is genius. It looks the same these days....that's the problem. 70s concrete jungle. Rock on Old Town Stevenage!

  • Almost everywhere in England has been contaminated by the 'darkside'. British people are too weak to remain true to themselves, and rubbish government has trashed our lives since the 70's. American gang culture, drugs, and Islam have ruined this country, and most young people are now just copying the worst examples they are given in society . Time for parents to bring back English discipline and good manners into their kids lives. These were my good old days, clean safe, and not at all 'dark'.

  • @57catz = Typical Brit always blaming others for stuff they themselves originated.

  • @57catz have you actually got any children and do you live in Stevenage you hypocrite.

  • We moved to Stotfold from Harpenden in 1972 and my brother and his family moved to Stevenage then. We were often there afterwards. Both families did a Christmas dinner for old people one year.

  • The guy singing in the band at 2:30 is my dad. He died just over three years ago & I miss him terribly. This has made my day. I was a year old when this was shot.

  • @rusty2222 Hi was your dad from stevenage or just a passing band

  • @hamstar8 We grew up in Welwyn Garden. My dad was from Ireland & moved to WGC in the fifties to work on the buildings when the town was growing. He married & settled there. He played in bands for thirty years or so. In the clip, I recognise Gerry Ferrara on keys - he was my godfather & Fred Fielder on drums.

  • @rusty2222 Nice one, what was the band called? are you still local? i am from stevenage but have lived in WGC now for the past 6 years, i also play bass in a stevenage based cover band, its a great clip

  • Council should be ashamed of themselves letting the Town go down the pan, now it's just full of pathetic gangs of chavs, and druggies, especially Harvey Mann, he's usually to be found in the Mother and Baby changing unit in the Town Square with some woman taking drugs...he needs his head kicked in!

  • @Flickyhecky you twat

  • @ashburton16 Do you know him then?

  • I never saw people in leather who dance like that

  • This is the greatest video.

None of it is true. I know I was there.

  • great stuff

  • wht happend to stevenage--- to many so called hard gangs i think england should take americas stand just shoot them this town is just full of so-called hard men and not enouth love for this town you look at this town in the 50.s to the 80, it was beautafull but now its gone down hill all this gangs need to be dealt with or put in the army to show them how lucky they are but no we just sit back and let everyone take the piss ...notice this used to be called great britton now its just britton

  • @sean316018 you mean the oval gang? there just pricks on benefits, there no threat unless you be a cock to them.

  • @sean316018 No its actually called Great Britain...

  • @sean316018 - it has never been beautiful - those horrible concrete buildings, aweful architecture, bad design - they should just bulldose the whole town centre and start again..

  • @Chillednfunked were do you live?

  • @Chillednfunked - where do your live?

  • @sean316018 what gangs?

  • OVAL CREW???? GAY CREW, got nothing better to do tat hang about on street corners and badger old ladies. pathetic, and stevenage is full of you c*nts! Thank f*ck I joined the army and got out of that sh*t town!

  • Go on the nidge!!

  • God how things are so different !!

  • hahaha 8 minutes - Coom by are!!! lol

  • OVAL CREW!!!!!!!!

  • Just what went wrong stevenage?!!

  • @kingofenglandrew what went right there...

  • @kingofenglandrew maggie's 'right to buy' scheme, thats what :(

  • @kingofenglandrew Negative ppl like you ! That's what's wrong with it. Why don't you get an education and see the rest of the world and then you'll realise how narrow minded you are. I'm only 23, but I love this town. I've lived in some rough places, but I always like coming back.

  • @redbird146 Actually i moved to america after university and even deepest darkest detroit pales in comparison to my fair hometown.

  • @kingofenglandrew Well then I pity you, that's all I'm saying.

  • @kingofenglandrew JUST WHAT WENT WRONG BRITAIN.

  • @Rustylad85 We ran out of cash!

this was a town for the London refugees of the second world war by the time this film was made it was no longer a government initiative to rehome londoners - it as a comercial venture to sell houses. infrasturcture investment was dipping and there was far less govt. presure on firms to locate there and give employment.

Stevenage like much of the rest of the UK was a working class town with limited encouragment to be anything else - until it ran out of work.

  • @kingofenglandrew

Giving kids axes (07:20) was probably the start of it! LOL!

  • @kingofenglandrew the chavs moved in, now we geeks have to stay inside
