@oglile I realized I'm old when I just said, "1981? Wow 20 years ago!" Great song promoting the joyful spirit of friends, fun, music and bad sweaters.
I know, you believe that! I always post about this Christmas song cause it's just my absolute favorite, & it is THE BEST song out there at Christmas time...I can't stand 'Christmas Shoes', & 'Where are you Christmas' & every other say Christmas song in between...I mean who wants to hear a song that will make you cry, these holidays can get depressing enough lol ;)
My love is half a world away and won't be back until after Christmas. I emailed this video to her last night She emailed me this morning...it brought her to tears. Thanks to Zinfanus.
I love this song and the video. It looked like they had so much fun!I would have loved to work at MTV back then, I wouldnt now even if they payed me all the money in the world. This is back when MTV was great now its dead. I love Billy Squire and its not Christmas until you hear this song and Band Aid. I heard this song on the radio on Sunday and I was so happy to hear it! Merry Christmas everyone!
my life is dumb. as a child, i was in elementary school, i loved billy squier (still do) and my friend told my mom that billy squiers songs were 'dirty' and my mom believed it. ("it talks about sex") thanks to my friend, but when this song came out i got it as a xmas present. the b side confused me. ahh those were the days!!! my mother denies all this stuff!!! AWESOME SONG!!!
Squier is the best !!!! you see he doesn't need to do a cover of jingle bells or silent night like everybody else does, this is a TRUE ORIGINAL!!!,thanks Billy and Merry Christmas to all!!!
Back when the "M" in MTV meant something...music! Loved those VJ's! What a great Christmas song...best pop/rock one ever recorded. And Billy Squier? Best concert I ever saw was when he opened for Queen just when "Don't Say No" came out. Great energy...great voice...and great 80's hair! Thank you so much for posting this blast from the fabulous past!
I agree completely! I do love 'The Christmas Song' by Nat King Cole, now that is a classic, then a few others including some from the Carpenters, but this one, I could listen to it over & over & over again...I was only 9 when this came out, but remember it quite well when it came out! After all, who can't forget when MTV ruled the world then ;)
Not to mention another favorite is 'Wonderful Christmas Time' by Paul McCartney! Justin Bieber might as well pack his bags when these songs are being played lol!
I was 15 and I remember this like it was yesterday, what a wonderful time the early 80s were. I was in love the most beautiful girl in the world and having the time of my life. Things were much simpler then. Sometimes I feel sorry for all the garbage in the world now that my kids are growing up in. Somehow I do not think it is the same for them.
@myepicmoustache - haha, you can't even spell awful...............technically speaking, the way you are spelling it would mean 'full of awe', which better dsecribes this.
@robin31165 go fuck yourself assclown, you can't spell describes right. You must be a fucking genius to insult my spelling when you can't spell yourself douchebag.
An all-time classic! I heard this song on the radio two or three times this past holiday season. I personally think it's good enough to be played year-round. Kinda short though...sure would like to find an extended version if one exists. I was born in 1981 so my coming-of-age took place later on, but I know in my heart that it would've been awesome to grow up during this time period.
At this point, MTV has sucked much longer than it was ever good. What a true shame, worse yet was that it gave birth to reality TV. How something so originally cool ending up sucking so bad, while churning out garbage is a bummer.
AWESOME! God, thank you so much for posting this!!!! What a blast from the past and what a rockin' good Xmas tune. Man, you can't ever go wrong with Billy Squier and seein' the original VJ's from MTV. Thanks for such a great memory!
Wow, if MTV did this today, the "artist" (no one is just a singer anymore!) wouldn't be half as talented as Billy Squier and no one could understand the song because either the artist would be screaming or whining it to death.
Plus, no regular people would appear because they would be replaced with half-naked hot girls.
Wonderful. Look at all the energy there, and the sheer fun they're having. MTV really ruled, once upon a time. Thanks for taking me back -- and Merry Christmas, especially to Billy Squier.
MTV is so sad today, it is 100% reality...Cause of no musical talent today! So sad! These were the awesome days of MTV! I do believe this was recorded around MTV's first Christmas in '81! Unreal this was 29 years ago!
Merry Christmas to everyone and God bless MTV back when it was what it stood for. Billy Squier, one of my great memories of the 80's. This song should be played every Christmas morning while you're making coffee B4 you open presents. God bless the 80's and I hope they are there when I reach my final destination.
I was a kid when we got MTV - and it was in 1982, but they played this around Christmastime in 1982, 1983, and it was probably around 1986 that MTV started having programming other than videos and now is unrecognizable. It is great to see the original VJ's in this video, esp. the late, great JJ Jackson.
MTV can never be what it originally was. It was something BRAND NEW that had never been done before. It was fresh and clean and pure. At a time when America was going thru a renewal under Reagan and the new decade of the 80's. Viewers aren't interested in watching 24 straight hours of music videos anymore. W have access to our music heroes thru dozens of media/internet outlets. There was no internet, YouTube, Mp3players, Ipods. Hell we just barely had the Sony Walkman. (look it up kids)
Great song. I just saw Billy last year as part of Ringo's All-Star band. Maybe the best thing about the video is the glimpses of MTV VJ Martha Quinn, who may have been the cutest girl in the history or the world.
What a shame that MTV isn't fun any more -- Billy Squier does a great performance here, sort of channeling Marc Bolan (Merry T. Rexmas!). I wish someone would overthrow the people who run MTV now, get junk like "Jersey Shore" off the air and bring back the good old days like in this clip!
I can recall when this first came out and I thought it was the best christmas song ever........its really up there still 20 or so years later.... it rocks !
Rock on people! Love this song - have a very blessed Christmas and an amazing new decade! Check out "Rent Veil" for some cool tunes and etc. while you're at it!
.....you see Billy ,does indeed write great songs including an ORIGINAL Christmas song ,not a COVER like everyone else does!!!!! SQUIER=REAL TALENT!!!!!!
I grew up in the 80's and am embarrassed to say I had NEVER heard this song until I heard it on XM a few weeks ago. I LOVE IT!!! It is in my top 5 for Christmas tunes. Ahhh.... the early days of MTV.
....you see Billy Squier doesn't need to cover a traditional song like everyone else does!!!!! He writes his own Christmas song!!!! Squier = REAL TALENT!!!!!!!!!!!! Merry Christmas everyone!!!!!!!!
Pink Floyd did a Christmas original (A Christmas Song from 1975 only done on the BBC). The Kinks with Father Christmas (original). Weird Al with Christmas at Ground Zero. Queen had Thank God It's Christmas. Billy Squier is from my native Massachusetts. God bless this great rock and roll guitar slinger.
@DENo1MatchGameFan JJ passed away in 2004,but does anyone except me remember him doing a Video show "BEFORE" MTV?..He did a late night half hour Rock Video show for some Cable channel..I wanna say it was TBS,but I'm probably wrong.
@DylansDrFilth According to Wikipedia, he worked at KABC-TV in Los Angeles right before MTV picked him out to be one of the original five VJ's on MTV.
oh yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! soon Billy Squier's Christmas song will be on the radio!!!!!! get ready !!! great ORIGINAL SONG !!!!not a cover of Jingle Bells,or Rudolph,or White Christmas like other people do, Billy wrote this original song!!! as always SQUIER ROCKS and SQUIER = REAL TALENT!!!!!!!
Since Billy made this song, it's been my favorite rock Christmas song. I listen for it every year, when rock/pop radio stations play Christmas music. He was and is such a huge talent.

I miss the old good days of MTV. It wasn't so corporate then. It was better and more creative and imaginative.

@DylansDrFilth According to Wikipedia, he worked at KABC-TV in Los Angeles right before MTV picked him out to be one of the original five VJ's on MTV.

Since Billy made this song, it's been my favorite rock Christmas song. I listen for it every year, when rock/pop radio stations play Christmas music. He was and is such a huge talent.
