I don't know I love hiomiazakes other works but I have to say I this is one of his worst. Don't hate me for that either, it's just I think it's wired and it reminds me alot of the little mermaid. I mean the poster did say FROM THE PEOPLE WHO BROUGHT YOU THE LITTLE MERMAID COMES PONYO.but hiomiazake didn't work on the little mermaid.

@SuperFamfan Well, this was supposed to be a much more kid oriented film than a lot of Miyazaki's other films. Even so, it's not to bad.

It's kind of a Japanese take on "The Little Mermaid", and Disney was in charge of the English release, so they decided to play on it.

ive seen both the Japanese and American versions of this movie. while i dont speak Japanese and watched it with English subtitles, i thought it was better than the dubbed version. but thats not to take anything away from the dub. it did its job, and if you look past some of the flaws with the voice acting, its a nice, fun, family movie

@GreyEarlTea yea i've only watched the english dub but i enjoy japanese originals and subbed and the japanese anime is always better than the english dubbed basically english destroy the japanese shows :/ and reading subs can make you understand it aswell. english dub do not put emotion into dubbed animes which is disappointing :/

Try having an English cartoon or movie dubbed in Japanese.. it won't have the same feeling as the original. Anyway, without the dub, they wouldn't have shown this to Westerners. The dubbing of this movie made Miyazaki more well known and his work more popular. He gained from this dub.

@GreyEarlTea Studio Ghibli wont let Disney make any significant changes to their movies after a few disasters in the 1980s, where stories were completely changed because Disney thought US audiences were retarded. Ponyo and Spirited were dubbed as best as they possibly could and have been huge successes. Some people just dont seem to ever be satisfied.

@yxuz I would like to defend the people that you incorrectly grouping under the term. Usually we diss the English version of an anime if it is unable to stand par to it's original Japanese counterpart. Try as they may, if an American production company is unable to dub an anime in English and reflect the original meaning, maturity, and sense of fascination that the original created, I will dislike it. This is not to say all are bad, in fact many dubs are good like Hellsing and Hetalia.

@NebagibaX5 that true, but most don't care on how well they where translated. they would still insult a dub just because *insert character name here* doesn't sound like the original. also some dubs do need to change a bit to make a joke or story element so the language audience can understand it. example ( lets say a character is going to America and needs to speech English, and that is dubbed in to English the joke will need to be changed to make it flow better in contexts.

@yxuz except it doesn't take a major in japanese to understand how badly the dubs are fucked. See the evangelion movies for a recent example. Added cursing and changes in dialogue which change tones of conversation (ex: post credits "i will make you happy this time" to "i will show you true happiness") Its also hard for someone to dish out criticism when they themselves clearly can't master the english language.
