An the truth is you nor I know what happens after we die.
I recommend you doing mushrooms under the right conditions and remove your preconceived beliefs and mental chatter. "Just shut the fuck up and listen" using your own terminology.
I've seen your mushroom video but I feel it would benefit you to keep taking them with an open mind. Acknowledge the experience and don't muddy it with learned beliefs.
I don't want to start a argument, but I did want to point out the fact that you have a lot of material things behind you, and to be honest it looks like you got your jacket at old navy or some popular store, it also looks really clean. You don't consciously appear to care about these things, at least your words say you don't, but I think subconsciously you are attached on some level to your things, or at least, you allow yourself to become attached.
I believe the ego is the void/separation/darkness between the creativity and logic. The ego plays both sides against each other to sustain itself-the darkness/void between the two sides(this is duality and the two sides of you seeing themselves as separate) Ego death can be quite horrifying because when both sides begin to connect the ego begins to see it can no longer keep control and is being destroyed. You as the conscious observer will also feel the affects until the ego/separation is gone
@ophiuchus1130 I couldn't of said it better myself. That was spot on. The paradoxical situations the logical egoic self encounters as the illusory nature of the self is realized, causes ones awareness to fold back in on itself, like a doppler effect. As the ego unravels itself, great upheavels take place in the way one conciously percieves reality. The limitations of the ego removed is the end goal, but along the way ego death must occur, and it feels exactly like it sounds, like your dying.
Still the way we think and how you said animals lack the senses is still just the human way of thinking. Have you ever researched the third eye of animals or how plants have feelings and senses or about entheogens? Pretty interesting things...
"reality" is just a human made thing. Think of how a animal sees the world, its totally different then how we see it. So whos observation is right? Us or the animals.
Well, yes. Our senses and intuitions are all heavily baised by our evolution.
This is why using commonly observable and repeatable evidence is so important - without it our prepensity for seeing pattern in randomness and intent in chaos can birth some rather bizzare and baseless ways of viewing the world.
Actually, our senses are not totally biased by our evolution - there is no evolutionary demand that would generate something as complex as the human brain, and in fact, it could be argued that such a brain is evolutionarily deficient in many ways.
Given that the animals lack tools which allow them to surpass their senses, systems of knowledge to find mistakes in their reasoning, and the large frontal lobe needed for abstract thought - we are probably a little closer to the truth than the rest of the animals on this planet.
I'm not stating that we have the perfect frame of view (we don't) or that science has figured everything out (it hasn't). But we're working on it.
@1965zoso Hey man last night i had an ego death experience that was very peculiar. Marijuana is the best medicine to induce one and although it is a very unpleasant experience (to me) if you write your thoughs down it is a very valuable experience. Anyway what im trying to say is your explanation of ego death is basic but it is very fucking well said.
Your opinion that you do not exist is merely an opinion, and a biased one at that. You, and other atheists, may have accepted the idea of dreamless sleep as a pleasant state, but that may not in fact be what is to come - there is evidence to the contrary. But if that helps you deal with the absurdity of life and death, imagining comfortable nothingness, then go ahead - but remember, this is comparable to a religious person theorising on heaven to comfort themselves, too.
That is interesting. I am not a pot head, but I am for letting people choose to do what they want with their life. Personal liberties are great but only Ron Paul supports them and both parties are trying to keep him out of the political world.

This is the kind of thing I try to tell people. Glad to see you're trying to get others to think about it as well.
I don't really agree with with your usage of the term 'ego death'. That's already used to mean something entirely more profound with regards to the psychedelic experience.
That being said I believe we should all tone down our egos a bit and try to look at the world for what it really is.
the people who'd rather die than give up their ego are just people who've gotten into the circle of our commercial society. You sir are a gentleman and a scholar.
I think ego arrises most when we feel we need to control the things around us. It must help knowing that there are many different ways to experience the universe. Thus, helping us realize things are never truly under our control. Weed can help people realize this.
I would like to point out that neurology shouldn't be the ultimate word when considering whether we have existed before... Neurology is just the current tendency of scientific thought. Just that. We always function under the current trail of thought. And although our current scientific models are very useful, they do not explain the universe completely (remember, now they're are saying there's water in Mars, which was a nono for ever) and neither do they it explain consciousness whatsoever.
Thanks for that man, I was feeling real depressed today and you just brought me back. It's nice to know that there are other people out there who think like I do. It just seems sometimes that everyone is so caught up with superficial bullshit and whenever i try to talk about this kind of stuff with the average person all they want to do is talk about some crap like what’s happening on Eastenders. I just don’t understand how blind people are, how they can’t see this beautiful mystery we live in!

I am not against marijuana, but, I do find the argument that you should use it because it makes you think better, is a little naive. I too have experienced that "omg" high idea, but, when I sat down and thought about, if I would have meditated on the subject at hand, I would have come to the same conclusions. Alas, this is still just analytical evidence, so dont hold what I said in to too much regard. :)
Personnally Im pretty scared of death, it really gives me a feeling of emptiness when I think about it profondly, cause I know it is very very unlikely there is anything after death. But I wouldn't trade that feeling for a bullshit belief or for just no fears at all, because it reminds me how life is precious and helps me focus on my life and what I can do with it before it ends.
You my friend is talking about Taoism. It's a religion also (this part is bogus of course). But its actually a timeless philosophy about 2000 years ago in China. This video sums up that philosophy pretty well. Im lucky enough not to grow up with religion(s) breathing down my neck, but the person that raised me was superstitious as hell, rebellious in nature I decided to be a free-range kid (in term of beliefs). Eventually I luckily ran into Taoism, maybe the freest system of thought possible.
Very nice vid. Despite your self chastisement, you articulated your views exceptionally well. Everybody is a pile of drivel when comparing oneself to Sagan.
You're lucky to not be afraid of death, its something that has consumed me lately and I can't conceptualize the act of dying. I really wish instead of immortality, that we could fry my brain to longer be sentient. Like the great line from the Seventh Seal, "What will happen to us who want to believe, but can not?" I really hate being an agnostic...
This is the most important Youtube video ever!!!! Post this on your facebook if you have a soul. I would marry this guy immediately (but I'm already married). Thanks for the agreeable thoughts. I like to cuss, too. Were you prior service?
Ok I have to say one thing. THANK YOU! Multiple reasons for given you praise as well. For one, someone other than me is actually voicing this in a broad manner rather than just to their circle of friends who agree with them already anyway.
And two, I've been searching for such a way to describe what death is because I'm not afraid of it either, and the way you put it "We live for such a short period of time and then go back to where we came from" are the exact words describing my outlook.
Genius! I'm the same as you, Im not in actual fact afraid of death but I dont exactly want to die. But I don't think we just go back to non existing I believe that we go back to non existing. Then something happens, I have no idea though, perhaps re-birth?
Unfortunately, 3 hits off a joint isn't usually enough to wake some people up, and even if it does, they'll just rationalize the experience later as something that was drug induced.
The worst part about it is, I've met some people who have so much talent, and they waste it because the talented can get results from idiocy. I just tried to get through to someone today, who has the potential to go far beyond normal human understanding, seriously, but she's just a brainwashed idiot as she is.
When I've had a bad day or I'm feeling a bit down I simply get on You Tube and watch cosmos documentories and I reminds me that my problems are so fucking insignificant that they may as well be an illusion.
Interesting that you say we will return to non-existence... In a physical sense I certainly agree with you, but I believe that there are souls in all living creatures, and I tend to swing in the direction of a concept that is a truth similar to reincarnation.
Then we started talking about all the "druggies" in the past like just about anyone into the music scene, hippies, no namers, big namers. I blame it on really on the callousness of our government to get our soldiers involved in a hellish war in Vietnam over a lie! A lie we didn't know until more recently, (been a while now.) when unclassified documents came to surface!
People were getting high to get away from government oppression, the same damn thing our founding fathers were running from!
....devil war shippers and saying that we need prayer for society to function right. Mean while we have catholic priest messing with little boys, and if that wasn't bad enough you have the churches covering for many of these priest just for an image! When you break it down, the bible isn't anything more but laws before there were laws. And religion is just politics/politicians running peoples lives into the ground just like in our current governments internationally!
I've been watching the Cosmos, he left us much to early.. RIP Sagan, I was talking to my cousin about HOW...
Religion just wants it there way or the highway or else, they're religions have caused thousands of years of war and continue to be ignorant to the fact that these scientist know what's up. But their so damn scared of their own shadow they need a false sense of security at all times! PUSSIES LIVE LIFE.
They want to shut n e free minder thinker up, callin them sinners.....
I smoked a decent amount of marijuana, and and closed my eyes and let my self go. i felt like a melted into the strings of the universe. It was like i dissolved to nothing, but i was also everything. I always thought about exactly everything you just talked about all the time, i fucking loved this video.
Yeah I agree with Djeezes to watch the fountain. Reincarnation was stripped out of the bible to make people fear death. Why do you think they call it the King James version of the bible?
"You" are not your physical body. How can you seek the "infinite" with only the sense organs? It is impossible on this plane of existence. By the way, I did exactly what you said to do...sparked a joint with a friend on a late clear sky winter night in Canada...and WOW, my friend was scared lol. I agree with what you are saying, "it' is hard to find.
@SolRosenberg84 The Brain may create the Mind entirely, but what of Consciousness itself? There's no way that i'm aware of to prove that Consciousness is a biproduct of the brain (only speculation). I believe that Consciousness precedes matter...also, marijuana seems to bring about an Identification with Pure Consciousness rather than mind or body with me. One Love
Dude, I came across your vids through Coughlans pwnage olympics and I just gotta say, you're one of the best speakers I've seen on youtube, great substance and the delivery is perfect. I think you might be my Canadian twin! I've had some of the exact same thoughts as you presented in this video. I'd love to smoke a joint with you dude!
OMG BEST THING IV EVER HEARD - " I just want to find these people who are always caught up in stupid shit , I just want to grab them, bring them out to a field in the middle of the night, and just go *SLAP* SHUT THE FUCK UP, TAKE THREE HITS OFF THIS JOINT AND LOOK UP"
I've recently stumbled upon the concept—and I can't quite remember if it's a hypothesis or a theory—that we timelessly existed, and continue to do so, through parallel universes and what have you. It was when I started looking into quantum mechanics and string theory that I stumbled upon the many worlds scenario and quantum immortalilty; the stuff blew my mind. From what I understand, it says that we may be living an endless vicissitude of lives—oh fuck it, I don't want to get into it now.
The only kind of immortality is people like Gandhi and John Lennon, and Martin Luther king, and Dalai Lama, Buddha, George Carlin, bill hicks, etc....
the kind of people that die, but their legends and ideas live on forever.
so immortality... no, you will not find it in being rich selfish, greedy, and egotistical. No. no one will remember you for that. you will be forgotten. quickly.
I think Sagan said at some point that he got some of his best ideas while stoned. He got a lot of stupid ones, too, but those ideas that held up while he was sober made a great contribution to science.
so very correct on people not wanting ego death. However, I disagree on a non-living universe, or on not having a soul. People need the familiar and in a big way this is a death on to its self. As for dieing. It scares me, and this coming from a person who is firm in the belief of a soul. BTW I think you express your self elegantly, not necessarily in words, but in a sense of self awareness. I enjoy your videos
I have been tempted to just go and smoke some pot, but I've been hesitant because a few of my friends who have toked said it made them paranoid while they were high, and knowing me, a really paranoid person, they said that I got high, I'd think the walls were out to get me.
On the topic of death, I do realize that death is just like the period on the end of the sentence of your life, but I'm hoping technology will allow me to turn that period into a comma, so that I may continue my sentence.
You just have to remember that all it is is paranoia. I've never felt paranoid while high on mj, but I am pretty sure that all you have to do to thwart paranoia is realize what it is. And you don't trip from weed, so don't fear the walls
My experience with first-time smokers (including my fist time) is that you barely feel anything, maybe a little dizziness. Next time though, you expect roughly the same feeling and suddenly go "holy mother of...." :) Fun to watch.
you articulate well- its the anger of self and passion to tell others that needs to be humbled within and then you will be just as great as sagan :) when you swear you are angry- ask yourself angry at what and is ego culprit there? Anger at something trivial. :) peace :)
If we spent as much time worrying about this life, as we do our next, it would certainly become that which we wish to attain.
Being rude to another race isn't racist. There is a bigger problem in this world. It's called assholes. Assholes are everywhere. Assholes are a problem for everyone. Let's stop the ass holism, than we can worry about other social problems.
On the topic of ego etc, you might wanna read The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle...
Realizing that everything is meaningless and initially feel depressed and about it are just natural processes of ego loosening its grip and You erasing your false created ego self.
Been there... Eventually, still practicing surrender and "ego loosening", you rise to a higher level of consciousness where egoic pursuits are peripheral and it doesn't bother you... Again, I suggest you read the book ;)
I have read around half of that book - I liked his ideas on ego death, and his theory that the presence in the mind that is able to sense the reactions of the rest of the mind being your true personality - but when he started making bizarre claims about spirits I stopped reading.
I'm not afraid of death. I'm afraid of not figuring out how to become immortal.
Second, I disagree with you saying that nothing really matters. Life matters too much to waste on frivolous pursuits based on superstition and belief. That was his point. Not, toke this and look up in the sky. Stop trying to justify something you've been raised to feel guilty about.
I'm afraid of not figuring out how to become immortal.
^^^
Dude, I'm a big fan of the ideas behind transhumanism, but I'm still up in the air about immortality. What kind of people would have access to it? The rich and self-obsessed?
I wasn't trying to say "nothing matters" - I was more trying to say "you choose what matters", and that you should not let pop culture dictate your life (I've met people like this, and its very sad).
O.K. I miss understood you than. No worries. I think you bring up an interesting point about only the rich having access to immortality. But the same already exist with health care. Is health care a bad thing? What I think would be the real problem is over population. But all this can be figured out through already known ways of population control. Extending life spans is a continuing science. That's why science is FAR better than any religion. Period. aw
Science is the only way to the future we all hope to have. Religion is stagnant. It inhibits progress.
Science gives us hope, it empowers us with a sense of purpose and meaning.
The scientific method is the only method worth practicing. Through it, we are able to see those things which are otherwise darkened by agenda, pride, and tradition.
Culture is meaningless. It says to me, this is how it's always been, why should we change it? That is not progress. If we refuse progress, we lose.
I've also thought of death as being similar to before you were born. Another thing I've compared it to is a night of sleep when you recall no dreams. You fall asleep and wake up with no awareness of the passage of time. Of course, you do wake up. Personally, I'm more afraid of old age, or the awareness of your own impending death, than death itself. I know that once you are dead, game over. When you are dead, that's as stress free as it gets ;/.
You slapped Wikipedia. You used the word "Shat". You give props to Carl. What's not to love!? You may not fear death, but the dying process is ugly. "Life is a waterfall"- nice metaphor. I won't comment on the ganja.
Your opinions aren't welcome on the SAS page, but as an ex-hunter turned vegan myself, i'm more than happy to debate you elsewhere. Just don't mistake your opinions for "facts" again.
Stalking however, will get you removed from Youtube, Skippy, so mind your business.
You know, that whole "You didn't exist" thing is a good point. As Elenor Roosevelt said "I don't think it would be any more bizzare for me to show up in another life than it was for me to have shown up in this one."
I just noticed the Guy Fawkes mask in the background. :)
After I became an atheist I first thought "Oh shit, I'm gonna die and then that's it for me", but then I just got over it. No sense in wasting your life thinking about death. Live your life BECAUSE of death. And I feel the same way Sagan did about all this stupid little shit we like to worry about. Just look up at the stars and be happy you're alive damn it.
Haha... funny how a rastafarian, earlier this week, told me to smoke some pot and look up at the sky. This was how I was meant to see God, according to him.
Dude. Your great. Funny and articulate at the same time. Kudos.

@juan11don I definitely agree. It feels more like a philosophy of living rather than a religion. Some people follow the Tao without knowing it :D

What? Neurology suggests that the mind is created entirely by the brain. When the brain didn't exist, therefore, the mind did not exist.
SolRosenberg84 2 years ago 7
and modern linguistics suggests that the Platonic theory of the mind is more likely true.

One Love

No. no one will remember you for that. you will be forgotten. quickly.

so very correct on people not wanting ego death.

CypherDxvz 3 years ago
You just have to remember that all it is is paranoia. I've never felt paranoid while high on mj, but I am pretty sure that all you have to do to thwart paranoia is realize what it is. And you don't trip from weed, so don't fear the walls

you articulate well- its the anger of self and passion to tell others that needs to be humbled within and then you will be just as great as sagan :) when you swear you are angry- ask yourself angry at what and is ego culprit there? Anger at something trivial. :) peace :)

If we spent as much time worrying about this life, as we do our next, it would certainly become that which we wish to attain.
Being rude to another race isn't racist. There is a bigger problem in this world. It's called assholes. Assholes are everywhere. Assholes are a problem for everyone. Let's stop the ass holism, than we can worry about other social problems.
Say no to assholes in 2009!

Again, I suggest you read the book ;)
bohmana 3 years ago
I have read around half of that book - I liked his ideas on ego death, and his theory that the presence in the mind that is able to sense the reactions of the rest of the mind being your true personality - but when he started making bizarre claims about spirits I stopped reading.

I'm not afraid of death. I'm afraid of not figuring out how to become immortal.
Second, I disagree with you saying that nothing really matters. Life matters too much to waste on frivolous pursuits based on superstition and belief. That was his point. Not, toke this and look up in the sky. Stop trying to justify something you've been raised to feel guilty about.
jwil2570 3 years ago
I'm afraid of not figuring out how to become immortal.
^^^
Dude, I'm a big fan of the ideas behind transhumanism, but I'm still up in the air about immortality. What kind of people would have access to it? The rich and self-obsessed?
I wasn't trying to say "nothing matters" - I was more trying to say "you choose what matters", and that you should not let pop culture dictate your life (I've met people like this, and its very sad).
SolRosenberg84 3 years ago
Period. aw
jwil2570 3 years ago
>That's why science is FAR better than any religion
Fuck yes.
Science is the future, and religion is a memetic parasite that will latch on for as long as it can to the human mind.
SolRosenberg84 3 years ago
