  • How long did you soak the sand paper under water? and my last question is whats the size of the compressor you used with the paint spray gun? what's the psi on the compressor?

if i could get a reply back asap from you that would be awesome.. Thanks!!

  • hey there, great video, just wondering what kind of compressor you need for the spray gun, how many cfm does it need? Is the paint you used just a regular single stage paint? what happens if your paint runs in 2nd or 3rd coat, do you just wait for it to dry, sand and then reattempt the layer? Thanks!

  • I BADLY need help! i have a sand blaster that i had bought from Harbor Freight and since you seem to know more about this than i probably do. my question is you think a sand blaster will help remove my decal and stickers off my fairings? I'm having all the fairings repainted(whole bike). blow drying Does Not take off a big chunk off at a time. I've tried for hours! I don't want to spend a whole lot on this project beside the paints. You have any suggestion on the easiest way to remove them?

  • @saflip969 Yeah, you should be fine to use a sand blaster. Just be careful not to let it abrade the plastics too much. You should be fine on the tank though.

  • Finished the paint job. Uploading the final video now. Thanks for your vid and take care.

  • @Gixxer600boy Awesome! Have a great riding season!

  • this video was put together very well

  • What kind of paint did you use for your gun? (also what psi) I am going to paint my bike come spring, and was wondering if i use metal primer for the gas tank and front fender, and use plastic primer for the plastics, can I use the same paint for both if i rough up the primers before hand? Oh and the color, of course

    thanks Dan

  • @Nighthawk750rr Use the primer that matches the material you are putting it on. Then you should be pretty open to using the same paint on both types of primer. In the section below this video, I have put a link to a document you may download which has all of the info on the materials I used, as well as locations where you can buy them.

  • hey now dont you have to put a clear coat on after u sand it with 2000 grit

  • Absolutely fantastic video

  • Nice video, i want to paint a helmet , do i follow the same steps here, and also do i use any clear coat, because i didn't see you use any , also i"m using cans of paint ..thanks

  • Very informative! Will be resurrecting the 92 cbr f2 Ive been working on all winter with new paint once tempatures rise! Check out my channel, will post a video once i paint.

    Thanks again!

  • @turrock Well, I'm glad I could help. Let me know when it's posted!

  • Wow, u have a nice honda and a porsche 944

  • @SlimShadyfan2247 Thanks

  • Thanks Dan. I ended up calling Color Rite and they said I would only need 5 cans of paint. On their website I saw they said 2 cans for a big fairing or tank. So I figured 4 for left and right side, 2 for the tank and 2 for tail section and front cowl and 2 for extra measure if I screwed up. Thanks for the response and please check out my vid when I make it. Take care.

  • @Gixxer600boy Glad I could help. Let me know when it's up.

  • dude this is awesome thanks for the help.

  • @deadmanwalkin67 You are very welcome

  • I have watched this three times now. But what would you use to fix the cracks? You said the resin came through, so no need to fill it. But I plastic welded mine. And bought some fiberglass bondo stuff, but not sure if it will work. Any pointers would be appreciated.

  • @DanJDT1 If you plastic welded yours then I would smooth it out with a plastic body filler and then sand it.

  • I was thinking about painting a motorcycle white with a few broad black stripes. Any advice on accomplishing this? Should I sand, prep, paint black lines and tape them off, then paint the rest white? Paint it white, then tape off the rest of the bike and add stripes. Striping before compound and buffing? After? What order do you think I should go with?

  • @JohnnyOChicago There are some great videos on here about striping and I would recommend watching some of them. But I do believe that the stripe on top of the main color is the way to go/ Make sure you use some really good masking tape to avoid fingering. Maybe use frog tape or something.

  • Any advice on keeping cost down for paint. Figured on using 10 rattle cans of primer, 10 for paint , and 10 for clear coat. It's an 02 gsxr, total from Color Rite is $680.

  • @Gixxer600boy Wow!! If you are paying that much then you could get paint and a gun and possibly an air compressor!!! Go to sherwin williams auto paint and ask them for prices if you have a special color you want to match. You should not need ten of each rattle can if you want to do it that way. I say the autozone stuff isn't bad.

  • great video, you have inspired me to paint my old SRAD, so far I understand what your doing and why, in regards to the paint itself exactly what should I be using? I would like a black w/pearl? or a midnight blue? do I need to add a flex agent? arte there release agent I need to be concerned with? I figure if I am going to put the time into prep I may as well get the nicest finish possible, guess I would like a uv clear too? thanks Cuz

  • Is it bad to paint while the weather is cold? I want to get this done before springtime comes around but would it be better to wait for warmer weather.

  • Any advice on applying new decals after I'm done painting? Under the clear coat I assume?

  • Thank's for the great video and info. I do find your title somewhat misleading, tho. I mean, were the costs for the spraying set covered in your 100 Dollar budget?

Can you get a nice glossy finish like yours using a regular can of spray paint? I would appreciate your feedback!

  • @michor10 Well my $100 does not include the equipment, just the paint and sand paper. Yes, you can get a shiny finish from rattle cans if you sand and buff it right.

  • @TheCousinDan Thanks. I'm thinking about getting myself proper (used) spraying equipment. Just have to figure out how the hell to make one of the basement rooms dust-free, :D.

  • Thank you, Conan O'Brien :D

  • what is a light, full, and medium?

  • @TheTeeWashington He means the tone (brightness) of the color, I assume.

  • Does the same technique for sanding work for the fuel tank? Or is there something special that needs to be done

  • If I wanted to add a clear coat would I need to buff the paint with rubbing compound first THEN add clearcoat? Or can I just buff the clear coat when it's all done?

  • @SweeturKraut Just buff when it's all done.

  • how did you get that glossy finish? do you sand between coats

  • @THe808KiNGX It's all in the video.

  • Cousin Dan, great work on the vid, thanks to you ive managed to get a pro finish to my bike! ive painted before but only minor touch ups, but the system you show got rid of all orange peel, many many thanks, Marshall ( now the owner of a shiny white hornet, or honda 599 i think in your country)

  • @rea7lred7devil So happy to hear it was helpful! Thanks for letting me know.

  • Really good detailed vid man, I'm spray can painting my kaw ninja and I sanded, cleaned, automotive primered two layers, base spray can painted 2 layers, then spray can painted gloss finish 2 layers (I waited 20 min in between each layer) and waited two days before aggressively touching and it looks and feels damn good but I can push my finger nail into the paint and scrape it off like a damn lottery scratch off!! Any suggestions????? Like do I have to let it cure for a certain time. I used ru

  • @Coalcracker79 I'm sorry to hear that, what type of paint did you use? Is it possible that your conditions were not ideal? I mean how was the humidity, and was it too cold? Did you sand all the way through the paint before shooting or is it possible that the paint beneath is affecting what you put on top? If all this is good then you probably just need to wait longer. Mine took awhile to cure after the video, and it was fairly soft during that time. However, once it cured, it was very hard.

  • @Coalcracker79

Some paints take 2 to 3 week before fully dried and hardend. The softer the paint, the more flexible it is. Also, a slower dry process tends to result in better and harder end coating.

  • before you sprayed your clear coat did you wet sand at all? and if you did do you add another layer of paint or do you then move to clear coat? i am actually painting flat black. if you have any tips please do let me know so i can do this right. Thank you.

  • @opfosho28 No, I actually did not add a clear coat...personal choice of mine for the look I wanted. As for flat black, I would say to keep in mind that the sprayed texture is the one that is going to be permanent, so be careful to spray evenly.

  • good video man - i will definitely look back to this when i paint my bike's track fairings

  • I was thinking about painting my bike too. Would the rubbing compound give it a long lasting shine or will i have to use rubbing compound frequently? also would clear coating be a good bet?

  • Hi i have a Piaggio Zip i just want to ask do i must do the same thing to paint it and i`m about to paint it with a deep red color would it be better if i do it with a spraycan ?

  • @plamenbanchev Yeah, a spray can should work fine for that thing. If you are painting onto plastic directly you may want to prime it or use a plastics paint (I might even use Krylon Fusion from the department store).

  • Awesome Job Dan, but will it blend?

  • hey i have a burn hole in my exzaughst thet bubbled up is there anything i can do?

  • nice 944 btw lol

  • No primer? No Clear Coat?

  • @MazterblooD

    yeah, it looks butt.

  • Excellent video, nice to see one aimed at the home diy-er.

  • The bike turned out really well, didnt like the sticker. Good job.

  • Dan, I need to repair the fairings from lowsiding my bike, I am gonna have to use some body filler, do I need to prime these areas before top coating?

    Thanks, Corby in Houston

  • @CorbyJB It will help to fill in any imperfections if you do.

  • Yes sir, Cousin Dan, this video is excellent! Very informative and very good nicely done. In the future, get yourself a light kit because I know it will come in handy for you on other projects. The audio was great and I like you editing style. We're subscribing now!

  • @R1VideosdotCom Thank you, I appreciate the compliments. I will be working on developing better lighting options as I move along with this.

  • ahah at 2:31 u mention the best way to see the "dimples", there is abetter way, wipe dry the surface like u mentioned, but then u should use "Wax 'n' Grease" remover (or Prepsol) on the surface, it is 100% more visible than relying on the suns reflection.

  • @MetlHead37 Nice, I'll have to check into that. Thanks.

  • @TheCousinDan Yea no probs man, need anymore tips? just ask me, I been painting prestige cars for 20yrs, got out of trade in 2004, you don't see any healthy old spray painters eh!!

  • @MetlHead37 Thanks I appreciate it. I will be keeping that in mind!

  • why don't u use a soft rubbing block/pad to wet sand? If u dont you'll see finger marks in the finish, also after sanding with the 400, u should use a "guide coat" (guide coat is a very light mist coat of black paint sprayed onto the surface) to help you see the 400 scratches when using a finer grade of sanding paper... i take it ur not a tradesman??

  • @MetlHead37 I've learned a lot since this video, from people like you...but no, I'm actually in the medical field haha. Thanks for the tip.

  • Great video man and a beautiful bike too! You did a great job. I'm looking to do my first paint job on a Fairing for a '96 Harley FLH I plan on mounting on my V-Star 1100 Custom. I'm going for a straight black paint. You're site is gonna be a lot of help.

  • @yodablues I appreciate the compliment. Glad I could help.

  • no clear coat needed? o.0

  • @tazmaniak246 In this case only. I was going for a specific retro look, most of the time you will add clear and follow the same steps, minus the wet sanding on the clear.

  • @tazmaniak246 clear coats are only used on metallics or pearl coats to protect the coloured finish, also can be used over coloured finishes for a money saver if u don't have enough colour for puttng on 4 coats of colour, if u only have enough colour for just getting it covoured, u can then use clear coats to finishe the job.

  • @MetlHead37 wtf are you talking about? clear coats arent only used on metallics. always put on a clear coat if you want your paint to look as good as possible, the only exception to not applying a clear coat is if you're trying to achieve a matte finish. not only does clear coat provide deep shine but its also a layer of protection for your color coat.

  • @WillyPhister dude, It all depends on the type of finish your trying to achieve.

AND I did mention the fact you can do that too., cleap paint is the same as coloured paints, just no dyes for colouring it, plus they have UV properties. So there is no reason to put on a clear coat for "deep shine" as you say, nearly all 2K automotive paints can have a deep shine.

Put two red identical cars side by side, one with clear coat and one without, and you wont be able to tell the difference.

  • @WillyPhister not only that, we're only talking about backyard jobs, not professional jobs here mate.

  • Hey, do i need to remove paint completely if i want to change the color?

  • @Vitegro No. I the paint is in good condition to start with then you should be fine. Just look for signs that the original paint might not be adhering to the bike. If this is the case then you will need to take it all the way off so that you don't just paint on top of a coat that will soon be chipping off.

  • @TheCousinDan Thanks! Saved me heaps of time

  • So what exactly are the different steps in sequence for rubbing it down after you painted it?

Also, what kind of paint do you use? How important is your selection of paint?

  • Pretty good instruction. Check out my videos on a 94 Yamaha YZF750R I repainted from a black to a multicolor racing scheme with decals. Done with rattle cans. ☺

  • Great video! You answered all my questions!

  • How come you didn't use any primer??? Also you didn't use and flex stuff??

  • I used to have one of those! 1987 Honda Hurricane (CBR 600 F1) right?

  • @SpidermanMagician Close, I have a 1990, but they were the same generation.

  • hi just wondering if the substrate of the motorcycle fairing was prepared properly as it needs to be abraded for the fibreglass resin to adhere

  • @smithyman2 Yes, I probably could have been even more aggressive in that regard, but it's still holding today!

  • thank you for posting this! I have a question tho If I wanted to clear coat would I still follow all of these steps then clear or would I just clear coat over over my 3 dried coats without the compound ?? thank you

  • @napoliremodeling Follow the same steps. Clear coat should have 3 coats as well.

  • Thanks for the video! Do you need to worry about doing a clearcoat with this?

  • @bigbob1122 Not on this one, but most paint jobs you do.

  • Great DIY! Amazingly put together! Only question I have is about the fiberglass, there seems to be many different kinds. Mat and cloth just to name two, and it seems like there is multiple kinds of each? What kind would you recemend, or what did you use?

  • @SenatorVahey Thank you. There are several kinds but they all do the same thing basically. If you are going to do small fixes I would use the matte. If you are looking to fab a part I would go with the cloth most of the time. But you can usually do anything with any of the kinds.

  • love the 944! is it N/A or boosted?

  • @delta86bravo No, not boosted, but still fun!

  • yea i agree good video....

  • As a former teacher myself, I have to say that this vid & info was incredibly well presented. Thanks!

  • Man I've spent all day watching your vids, sooooooooo good

  • Paint looks good but my first coat of Simoniz lacquer seems peely... aaaargh! Hours getting this far! Any help from here? Thanks.

    Oh! Great vid Cuz!

  • Great vid

  • When you talk about reparing fiberglass or pastic parts, the fiberglass matting with the resin should only be used on actual fiber glass parts. the plastic parts that are used for most all motorcycles are SMC plastic and you need to use a SMC plastic reapair. there is a lot of of different plastic repair products out there. 3M auto mix will have all the types of plastic repairs you will need.

  • @TheHayes65 thanks, that's great info, I'll do that next time.

  • hey cousin Dan, i download the documents that has all the steps but I don't know when I would do the compounding steps? Should I do it between as coat or after the final coat ? Or after the clear coat? When? thanks

  • Good job cousin Dan!!

  • Can someone send me the list it won't download on my computer. Thank you

  • Ok, time for a really stupid question. On the downloadable list of materials, it says 2 quarts of Paint Shop spray lacquer, is that one of colour and one of clear? Or how does that work... sorry for the dumb question!!

  • good information man thanks

  • Do you have to wet sand between each application of base coat and clear coat as well? Also, should you wet sand between each coat?

  • @destynd2 Do not wet send in between clear coats. You may wet sand between base coats and on the last base coat but there really shouldn't be any need if you spray evenly and with the proper amount of material.

  • I couldnt get mine to shine. Does the orange peel on the paint play into big effect on that? It seems like mine has a bit still. I was afraid to go through the paint on the last wet sand before compounding.

  • @Cloudjkelley If you have bad orange peel after the base coat goes on then you need to wet sand it before the clear. Remember, with the clear coat you want to put a good amount of it on, but just don't let it run of sag. It has been said that the best paint jobs are one big run!

  • I want to know how much it'll cost for you to paint my bike for me.. :D

  • @presbarkeep I would entertain it if you are in Indiana...

  • This video was great! Can't wait to get started! Thanks to the uploader.

  • Nice vid, will help me out!

  • Great Video, I've prepped and painted ornamental iron for years, This will be my 1st bike, very excited

    Thanks!

  • What brand of spray paint would you recomend if you don't have access to a spray gun?

  • @paintmann211 duplicolor

  • I had a nice paint job on my gs650, but after being under a cover for a couple of months it got this checking/scratches in the paint. It only happened to the top of the gas tank, no other part. Its a red color now, but I'm thinking of going to a blue. Should I just wet sand with 400 grit until the area is smooth, then repaint, or should I completely remove the paint from all parts? Also, you should do a video using marine paint on a bike. Like interlux brightside 1 part paints. thanks.

  • @paintmann211 Hmm. That sounds like an interesting video to make. Next up on my list though is a plastics painting video. As for your job, I would go with some higher grit. like 600+. Then see if you can't compound it all out without painting. If you do have to paint then I say repaint the same color and only that part...unless you're bent on changing the color of course, but it's a lot more work.

  • So I could have my ex stand close by and speckle her ORANGE? Wicked!!

  • TheCousinDan,

With the method shown do you need to apply clear coat? I have Dupont base coat that I will be using for the paint and I would like to keep the shine. If so, any advise on clear coating?

  • This is the best instructional video for painting I have seen on youtube so far. Good job

  • Dan, great, detailed vid - Thx. Question: Want to spray pick-up truck bed-liner on a 1998 (purple(!), green, & faded...) Kawasaki KLR 650. All black, rugged & durable and should stand up to trail riding and the occassional drops/get-offs... So, what are your thoughts? Think it'll be do-able, work, hold up over time? Want it to look good, but it doesn't have to be "pretty"... Thanks, in advance.

  • hey wats up dan. im also painting my bike except im putting primer on my fairings and tank but am clueless if i should wet sand the primer once ive applied to the paint and the i would like to paint it blue or should i even apply a coat of primer??

thanks hope to hear a response.

  • @Gixxxer03 You should wet sand with around 400 grit...no further primer will be necessary.

  • im more interested in the porshe.....

  • @JerSayav Me too!!

  • fiber glass is a bitch

  • Great video, looking forward to future vids!

  • Cool im only 11 and I only just got the hang of changing gears and stuff so now when I get my own motorbike Im gonna paint a CRF80F lime green and black and put monster energy stickers on!

  • @Rozashelz2 Great to hear! Keep it up and send me a video when you get it all done!

  • Awesome tutorial bud. I'm going to film my repairs on my Honda CBR600F and link 'em to you.

  • @CaptnBienzi Very good, I always like to see other people's DIY projects on here.

  • Nice vid question I was looking to buy a bike and the guy said it needed sand blasted what does that do?

  • @lovemach1ne080 Sandblasting plastic (if your fairings are plastic) is a HORRIBLE idea. You won't have any fairings left. Follow TheCousinDan's method.

  • @lovemach1ne080 It's like putting sand in a spray gun and blasting away the paint....there is special equipment for it but it's basically shooting sand with air. Sometimes it makes the metal underneath sort of rough -- like a matte finish. Really you should just be able to sand it. In some cases you need to sand blast but most of the time sandblasting is just an easier/more efficient/lazier way of getting it done.

  • hey, thanks for this great video man !! few questions if i may ...

i wanna use a spray can (from ColorRite) will it produce the same results ? (i don't have a compressor right now)

plus, do i need to use a primer before coloring ? i mean, remove the original color, primer and then the new color ?

    10x.

  • @ibasoni Yes, you can use a spray can. Just be sure to compound when you are all done. And add a few clear coats about 12 hours after the color has been applied (then compound). You only need to prime if the paint is sketchy so you have to sand down to the metal. If the paint quality is ok (regardless of how bad it looks) then just rough it up with sand paper and spray it. Make sure it's smooth though. Rough it up with 400-600 grit. maybe higher.

  • What brand of paint guns/paint do you use? The brand I used on my Ninja cracked and started falling off before I even got the chance to put on the clear coats.

  • @dbbdrummer94 More than likely it was not the quality of the paint but rather the surface that you painted on. I would take it all down to the metal and start again with primer then color. I think that the paint you used was not compatible with what was on there.

  • did you put a coat of clear on your bike?

  • @datdangwizzle No. But you should, it's a rare case that you wouldn't.

  • my question is: Can i apply my base coat, put a sticker on the bike, then put on a clear coat?

  • @datdangwizzle Yes, yes you can. That is a great way to do it. Use several coats though because if you don't then the clear is more liable to chip around the edge of the sticker.

  • cool paint job bro!!

  • my husband has done body work but he doesnt really know what mixture to use for the paint. I am buying a kawasaki ninja 250 and i want to paint it pink. was wondering if you had a certain brand or company that isnt to expensive and also the products we would need and how much? and what the steps are of mixing. do we need a water adapter for the compressor? and anything else you can think of. thank you very much. sorry for bothering you

  • my husband has done body work but he doesnt really know what mixture to use for the paint. • If you were going to do stripes, how would you finish the final stages of buffing?

  • @JoshMcGehee I would do the stripes with the rest of the color coats and then clear coat the whole thing with several layers and then buff it out all the same.....or use stickers for the stripes.

  • @TheCousinDan Nice, thanks man.

  • I thought I was watching Food Network for a few minutes. Great video.

  • great video

  • I see we have a harbor freight right here in Omaha I'll shoot over there this weekend and pick up a spray gun.

  • @benharlan09 Very good. I'm looking forward to seeing your final product!

  • great video. I read you used a 5 gallon compressor, I bought ppg paint with clear and hardener today. I have a compressor I just need to know what type of gun I should buy and where I can get one. any recommendations? thanks I'll send a before and after link when I'm done painting my bike

  • hey man, awesome hurricane. is that an 88 or 89? i just got one 88 600cc. whats yours? u still got it? i picked it up with some damage though, to the fairings and ur video will really help. hopefully i can get some time to actually do it but i dont have the paint spray gun like you, maybe i can rent it from home depot.

anyway, hope to hear from u man, nice to see another hurricane on the road

  • @sohaibzk You know, for the cost of renting one you may be able to just buy one at harbor freight. You can go to their website too. If all else fails you can use rattle cans and just follow the same steps. I actually sold my bike recently but it was a 1990 600 hurricane. Get those fairings dine and send me a picture or link a vid!! I like to see the other projects out there.

  • Thanks CousinDan!!

We going to get you your on TV show.

I ave to finish my tank project is is going to be great thank to you!

  • @MrSharpiesmeller I would love my own TV show! Maybe someday haha. Glad to hear that your making good use of this.

  • i want to know how to achieve this look. with -- spray-paint. if its not an overwhelming challenge for you?

  • @ibiteharddd Just follow the same steps and when it comes to paint...just use a spray can! It's just that simple.

  • @TheCousinDan hey dan, i started trying to paint a car with rustoleum and its easy to make it look good on horizontal surfaces because it can lay out with out running that much, but when i get to spraying the sides of the car rustoleum maybe kinda sucks, people say well stack a coat on a coat every 15 minutes, thats cool but it kinda looks like shit from far away unlike real paint jobs i see on cars were it always looks glossy even from farther distances,

  • @sewerrod To avoid runs I would just spray lighter coats and hold your paint applicator farther back. You can even spray two coats within 5 minutes of eachother and then wait 15 and do more if you want. For the glossy look you might just have to use some regular automotive paint and not rustoleum. If it seems like it will be ok, then just make sure you compound the paint like I do in the video. You may even need to wetsand with a very fine grit first.

  • @TheCousinDan another question is does using paint thats already watery thin without having to use thinner level itself out or have smaller texture ripples than paint you have to thin,
