Here's my take on it. You can bitch all day about the the story, but that wasn't really what was bad about it. First of all, the entire world that James Cameron made really kicked ass, and the acting was pretty damn good for what they were given and told to portray. I really liked the human technology and just how it seemed very real and possible, even the whole consciousness swapping thing with the avatar bodies. The whole way it was put together was really big and looked awesome.
@Rangersleadtheway233 (Cont.) But then you have the bad elements. The story, not so much the originality, but the way it was done. The whole movie I felt manipulated, that i was supposed to like the Na'vi or I'm just some racist white guy. They were made to look so pretty and harmonious with nature that they were the ones that everyone was supposed to relate to and like. I also didn't care for the stereotypical, white military leader, the corporation owner, or the scientists.
@Rangersleadtheway233 (Cont.) They were so contrived and forced that they were hard to watch without laughing at them. That is what takes away from the story and why everyone thinks it is bad, it these forced side characters that are supposed to add to the plot, but end up taking away from it because of how poorly written many of the humans and Na'vis were.
@Rangersleadtheway233 (Cont.) Last, the thing that killed it for me was the final battle. 1. Why did they fly their planes and helicopters into the one place their targeting systems won't work? 2. Why did they fly the bomber SO FREAKING SLOW. It was almost asking the Na'vi to win. 3. The forces on the ground served no purpose. and 4th WHY DID THEY NOT JUST DROP THE BOMBS FROM UP HIGH WHERE THE BIRD THINGS COULD NOT REACH THEM? Anyway if I am missing something or you disagree, feel free to reply
The movie was good for what it was worth but I just hate how people call it the best movie ever just because it was done by James Cameron. I know fanatics that even liked True Lies (terrible) just because it was a Cameron movie. I bet if the same movie was done by any other director, it wouldn't have become the most profitable movie in history.
The hype around this movie was even bigger than the hype around The Dark Knight, so I chose to skip it and wait at least a year, because in my experience nothing ever lives up to it's hype.
I just finished watching and now I really regret that I didn't saw this on the big screen. It was amazing.
I think the hype was a big problem for people to really enjoy this film, just like with the last Indiana Jones movie, which after seeing it a second time, was good in it's own way.
Just because the story has been done doesn't mean the story = Shit!
IF you want some shitty art house film with complicated plots about two twenty something year olds, grinding glass lenses for a living in <adrid during the spanish civil war. Then by all means go rent it and rave about it, because it simply has a white oak leaf stating it has one first at some no name movie contest in a country you have never heard of. You will be board but justifying the imagery, Ill be watching aliens :)
is was a great movie, cant we agree on that? the story was a little unoriginal and it wasn't the most creative thing you have seen on the screen but still it isn't complete shit like you guys are making it out to be
Haha no. You think its great I think its terrible. A little something called opinions mate so no, Im not going to agree it was great. I honestly felt insulted watching this movie. I felt James Cameron pretty much treated us like idiots. He effectively dangled shiny keys over us and shook them like he was trying to entertain a baby. And low and behold the retards lapped all those visual effects up, ignoring the horrible plot. Its rare that a movie makes me root for the bad guys
No, I'm not saying that everyone who liked it is a retard. I'm just saying that there a lot of idiots that fell hook line and sinker to the visuals and proudly proclaimed avatar as the best movie ever. I honestly think that anyone who only looks at the visuals of a movie when rating it is an idiot. Thats my opinion. Tbh, I'm being so extreme about this because of how much this film rubbed me the wrong way.
"And low and behold the retards lapped all those visual effects up, ignoring the horrible plot."
How can you know they didn't like the plot too? Or some other things? You re just assuming they fell victims to the special effects trick cos your opinion of the plot is negative. So if they didn't like it for the story, it must be the special effects. Well, maybe they liked the story. Are they retards cos they have a different opinion about the plot from the one you have?
@wilde77 As I said, there are a fair few people who watched avatar and fell victim to the special effects trick. When I've asked people what they liked about Avatar, all they talk about are the special effects and act like thats all you need for a film to be great. I think that's bullshit, and I view those people as idiots. Its safe to assume that a lot of people's views on the film were sweetened by the eye candy, glossing over the rest of the movie.
If special effects were enough to save a movie, Final Fantasy movie would have been a huge success. Instead it flopped and as a result the division of Square which was dedicated to making movies was closed.
You can sweeten up with eye candy but only to a certain degree.
I liked the movie. I watched it 6 times already. 2 in theaters. I know the plot is simple, but the movie pulls all the right strings and in the end I enjoy it. It will never be a masterpiece. But it's a great one
@wilde77 Well good for you for enjoying it. Believe me I wished I did. However, I just felt insulted watching it and felt like I was being treated like an idiot. Honestly, I hated the hundreds of obvious cliches, the plot, the characters and all of that environmental preachy bullshit that was shoved down my throat. All of that combined just pissed me off and ended up causing me to want the humans to just nuke all those fucking annoying smurf cats
How the fuck was this a "western in space". It's nothing like "Dancing with wolfs", just cause it has a few things in common. It's like saying "Shawshank Redemption" and "The Dark Knight" are EXACTLY THE SAME, just cause they both have Morgan Freeman in it.
I couldn't sit through this movie a second time. The first time was okay, but I just couldn't stand watching it again. The only thing I still like about the movie is the special effects plus, Michelle Rodriguez, but that's just me being a fanboy. With the plot being unoriginal and predictable and the characters being one dimensional, I don't see why people think this movie is so great. Besides the special effects, it's pretty overrated in my opinion and it's really not all it's cracked up to be.
@RevengeOfMoctezuma Wait wait wait. How is the story unoriginal. Sure there are some movies kind of like the story, but the way it happens and takes place is completely original. Characters being one dimensional? WTF dude? Do you even know what a dimension is? Look at alien moves in the 1970s. Those are what you call 2-D. These models are completely 3 dimensional. Seriously I won't say it is the perfect rating, but I say it deserves all the rating it got/gets.
@danthonywalker I kind of agree with you on the story, but when i said the characters are one dimensional, I meant that in literary terms not the model's appearance.
after seeing avatar it is hard not to be cynical about the movie industry. it becomes clear through the oversimplified plot, mediocre writing, and one dimensional characters, that cameron just wished to replicate the 1.8 billion dollar success of titanic because he was hungry for glory. the na'vi and the marines are so vastly oversimplified and 1 dimensional the can be summed up as a giant middle finger to the audience. you've been played for the money in your wallets
@wellingtonwaterloo1 Cameron didn't believe it was going to top titanic till awhile after Avatar was released. As for the last statement, replace Na'vi with Rebels and Marines (They were mercs not marines in actuality) with Empire.
this movie sucks and its fucking awesome... it sucks because humans are going to burn in hell... and its awesome beacause humans are going to burn in hell
Avatar has got to be one of the most overrated films I've ever seen. The story just doesn't make sense and I'm sure that'll become more clear when Avatar 2 and 3 come out
I definitely found it entertaining the first time I watched but that was because the special effects and sounds really made the film seem exciting and intense. But when you look back at it... It's just a fucking mess
I'm fucking sick of people saying Avatar sucks or its overrated. Its like listening to a 5 year old complaining about what candy they do or dont want.Avatar is an amazing experience, not perfect, but very enjoyable on its own terms.
Avatar is the most horribly written blockbuster of all time, and it doesn't even act on its somewhat intriguing premise. It completely rapes its own initial idea of a peaceful and harmonious species by replacing the actual story with a montage of events, and then make them fight and kill for their newly elected alien president. The script would serve better as a parody of the current state of America!
Putting atmospheric jungle music on top of flashy graphics isn't filmmaking!
@vipercobra451 Okay, but enjoyable doesn't mean it isn't overrated. Call of Duty may be enjoyable, but does that mean it isn't overrated? No, Call of Duty is a shit stain in the face of gaming.
who the fuck does this guy think he is. 4.5 out of 5. there is know fucking movie in the world like this movie and you give it a 4.5. you are the stupidest donkey fuck in the world . this is a 5.5 perfect movie you retarded chicken shit dick licking ass eater.
you people are ridiculous okay just say i didnt like the movie or i loved it but really putting stuff "oh this is shit " oh come on you ppl act like a bunch of freakin2 year olds like if you didnt like the movie why look up the review on youtube and im not saying i looooooved it i mean i liked it but really like calm th f*** down :p
Opinions are opinions for the people who thought avatar was a grat movie just let the others think what they think but im not chosing sides im like in the middle i mean the movie was a bit dramatic but then again it told a good story and the story did resemble pocahontas but then again it also resembles how our world is today we are taking away abunch of wildlife and nature but thats so we could live with out being eatin by......things so im not on sides im like in the middle of all the opinions
@Uncharted3King No it didnt. It absolutely didnt change a thing. The only thing different that made me look at movies is how any overhyped bullshit with a plastic wrap called special effects can make any idiot go to see this movie...26 different times. Seriously, the amount that people rewatched this film is batshit insane! I know people who bought the movie twice and watched it in theatres 3 times! I could barely stand through it once.
@HighAltitudeAttitude To be fair to the Humans, it was implied through the whole movie that the Aliens were attacking them first by shooting arrows at them and killing the colonists. Which kinda gives the Humans the right to shoot down their damn tree.
No by no means do i disrespect their right to an opinion but i have the right to think that their opinion was not intelligently made. My opinion just so happened to be negative just because i was not groping James Cameron for his "genius" does not mean my opinion is invalid. I believe the average person now a days has a short attention span and no appreciation for artistic motivation and creative story writing and it shows with todays movies like this one.
Ok i hate to comment but do your brains work on more than two functions? This movie was very generic and had nothing original to it. Really ask your selves this at what point could you REALLY say that you could not predict what was going to happen next? This movie was just proof that the average person has an incredibly short attention span and has no real understanding of what makes a movie art.
If you put shit on cardboard and every calls it art is it? Just because they say its art does not mean it is. It means you have shit on cardboard and that your intelligence is in question.
@Dorthkrum i wasn't talking about how many people LIKED the movie, i was saying that people have different views or opinions on things.and in the comment you made about 5 days ago made me think that you were disrespecting others opinions.
@HighAltitudeAttitude it's a good thing that the navi's werent animated then huh? and CGI can be good if it is pulled off perfect. and avatar did that in any way
Without the "expensive" tech put into the movie, it would have falled apart. The story needed more development. Realism is a no go. A highly advanced species such as ourselves would wipe out the Na'vi without any effort.
@TheHappyman09 and what do you mean by that. it is a great movie. and it have more meaning to it than alot of movies have + it evolved the possebilities for film making a huge step futher ( sorry for the bad spelling, english is not my native launged )
lol he said 5 star cause he wanted more stuff on the dvd, fuck that ipaid for a 3d movie witch was fantastic when i saw it, and also who the fuck wants to wait for the dvd till they make a verdict when you dont need flashy things in a box to make you happy, i mean its one of the reasons people go out to the movies to see a good film, to rate it right there, to fall in love with it and maybe get closer to your man or women in the theater watching this event. Fuck it i rate it 5 FUCKING STARS!
I'm not gonna say you're an idiot for getting sucked into this phenomenon, but if you got sucked into this phenomenon you probably can't tie your own shoes.
One dimensional characters, flat acting, bad dialog, black and white moral ambiguity and militarism, evil capitalism, stereotypical characters and interpretations of the U.S. army and native Americans, awful story and narrative, and most importantly, an incredible lack of humanity; make for a great movie. Or, more like, a movie with shiny explosions and colorful things, to appeal for the average person.
I have finally realized why i liked district 9 more than avatar. One of the major differences in both film are the motivations of the hero, more specificly why the hero turns to the people that are being opressed. This has always been why I never care for these colonial themed movies. I liked district 9 more is because the protagonist joins the aliens out of desperation. in the film he forges an aliance with christopher johnson out of hope that he can make him normal again.
this was the best movie all seen when it ended I wish it restarted the movie I felt amazed it was like being in the movie I think this is a must see movie, if you haven't seen it trust me watch it
This movie is seriously the BEST IN THE WORLD. xD Plus, James Cameron DID save a lot for the DVD. Actually, he saved a lot more than people can respect. Even if the movie is long, I can say for a fact that I did not get bored ONCE in the film. (I saw it 8 times in theaters)
Who cares if he copied the storyline It made over 2 billion dollars and i guess you could say its because of the C G I but i loved it because of the story as well. You don't hear the guy who made dancing with the wolves crying about it.
Avatar was a great movie, but I feel like it was cliched and had too many overused plot devices. They created such an impressive world, and then practically steal the script from Pocahontas.
overrated movie, very simply a manipulative archetype to audience seduccion through subconscious derivative processes in the composition of the story and the setting (technology bad, corporation bad, nature and simplicity good) to capitalize on basic liberal notions of what is viewed as wrong or right. And all just to establish Cameron as an industrial tycoon and the satisfied owner of a nazi publicity manifesto and a big fucking wallet.
This is a very powerful movie that is much related to the forgotten nature of our own world. The navi were very spiritual and appreciated the beauty and importance of their homeland. The navi acknowledged the fact their world is one and that all is related and has it's importance. They killed their prey for food, but they did it respectfully and were very sorry. These all apply to our world, but society today has forgotten our true nature. I cried during this movie and it is just wonderful
This movie could be better but WHY BLUE PEOPLE?Why not Aliens.Ending was the only part that had ACTION.Who the fuck wants drama! We were waiting for the action but that was the only at the ending.1/5
Avatar is a decent movie but unfortunately it created the 3D trend which is annoying!! too much movies are in 3D!! it's like all the singer using Autotunes
I watched this yesterday and i found it awesome. Good graphics and CGI, awesome plotline and story. Very inspirational and just a masterpiece! Avatar is the greatest movie ever!
@globalko Emotional? There is only two ways to find that movie emotional. If you were, like me, cheering for the Humans, or do not understand emotion. The movie was just a cliched love story/disney knock off/White Guilt story, globbed over with endless CGI. If you want a real James Cameron movie, try Terminator 2. A real Humans against Aliens movie? Try District 9. If you want a real movie altogether, I can give you a very long list.
The movie for me is 4 out of 5 just for the fact it was all CGI rather than story, the story was good but in the end Jake doesn't tell the navi why they were there and what they died for; was it just really for freedom and to live or for that money their tree was under honestly.
I personally love this movie. The story is familiar yes, but I still enjoyed it. The world, atmosphere, and overall look are fantastic. Characters are played by familiar well established actors. IN general, I really like it. :) This is also the movie i took my girlfriend of 10 months on a first date with, so I'm a bit biased. :D
I watched avatar and the only thing good about it were the visual effects, the rest is boring. The characters are forgetable, the plot is pointless, boring, and unoriginal(they never really explain it), and the soundtrack sounds like something from the lion king. It got like millions of dollars and the ONLY reason is everyone was hyped about it(that and the visual effects). Above all its just another boring movie
This is what makes Avatar somewhat suck. It doesn't stand up after it gets out of theaters. It's like OMG 3DEEEEEE while it's new, but it loses it's awesomeness when it crashes into our homes. If a storyline doesn't make a movie worth watching in the home (like every Pixar movie succeeds in doing) it's not worth the rating that these guys gave it, and what other people gave it. Now do you guys understand why Cameron is trying to keep it in theaters as much as possible?
i'd give it 9 stars....out of a thousand, awful film, its great looking in the theatres, but it was terribly boring, everything about the film is un-origina
anyone who says the story was weak is right, anyone who says the movie was weak is either pretentious or genuinely incapable of allowing themselves to enjoy an experience.
story predictable, script serviceable, characters just barely tolerable.
great direction, amazing production design, great (if not manipulative) score, serviceable 3d, and last but not least - an amazingly lush, engrossing and believable world.
I understand people's problems with this movie. Yes, the story isn't original. Yes, the dialogue isn't the film's strongest point (it wasn't bad, just "disjointed" at times). But in terms of movie going experience, its truly an incredible film.
Here's my take on it. You can bitch all day about the the story, but that wasn't really what was bad about it. First of all, the entire world that James Cameron made really kicked ass, and the acting was pretty damn good for what they were given and told to portray.

Dorthkrum 9 months ago
Ok i hate to comment but do your brains work on more than two functions? This movie was very generic and had nothing original to it. Really ask your selves this at what point could you REALLY say that you could not predict what was going to happen next? This movie was just proof that the average person has an incredibly short attention span and has no real understanding of what makes a movie art.

Without the "expensive" tech put into the movie, it would have falled apart. The story needed more development. Realism is a no go. A highly advanced species such as ourselves would wipe out the Na'vi without any effort.

I liked district 9 more is because the protagonist joins the aliens out of desperation. in the film he forges an aliance with christopher johnson out of hope that he can make him normal again.

overrated movie, very simply a manipulative archetype to audience seduccion through subconscious derivative processes in the composition of the story and the setting (technology bad, corporation bad, nature and simplicity good) to capitalize on basic liberal notions of what is viewed as wrong or right.

TheDragongal 10 months ago
@globalko Emotional? There is only two ways to find that movie emotional. If you were, like me, cheering for the Humans, or do not understand emotion. The movie was just a cliched love story/disney knock off/White Guilt story, globbed over with endless CGI. If you want a real James Cameron movie, try Terminator 2. A real Humans against Aliens movie? Try District 9. If you want a real movie altogether, I can give you a very long list.
Killzoneguy117 9 months ago
The movie for me is 4 out of 5 just for the fact it was all CGI rather than story, the story was good but in the end Jake doesn't tell the navi why they were there and what they died for; was it just really for freedom and to live or for that money their tree was under honestly.

I personally love this movie. The story is familiar yes, but I still enjoyed it. The world, atmosphere, and overall look are fantastic. Characters are played by familiar well established actors. IN general, I really like it. :) This is also the movie i took my girlfriend of 10 months on a first date with, so I'm a bit biased. :D
FireScythe1992 1 year ago
I watched avatar and the only thing good about it were the visual effects, the rest is boring. The characters are forgetable, the plot is pointless, boring, and unoriginal(they never really explain it), and the soundtrack sounds like something from the lion king. It got like millions of dollars and the ONLY reason is everyone was hyped about it(that and the visual effects). Above all its just another boring movie
METALISMUSIC100 1 year ago
This movie may not be ground breaking, it is old fashioned story telling executed marvelously and presented in a mind blowing way.
Jort007 1 year ago
This is what makes Avatar somewhat suck. It doesn't stand up after it gets out of theaters. It's like OMG 3DEEEEEE while it's new, but it loses it's awesomeness when it crashes into our homes. If a storyline doesn't make a movie worth watching in the home (like every Pixar movie succeeds in doing) it's not worth the rating that these guys gave it, and what other people gave it. Now do you guys understand why Cameron is trying to keep it in theaters as much as possible?

anyone who says the story was weak is right, anyone who says the movie was weak is either pretentious or genuinely incapable of allowing themselves to enjoy an experience.
story predictable, script serviceable, characters just barely tolerable.
great direction, amazing production design, great (if not manipulative) score, serviceable 3d, and last but not least - an amazingly lush, engrossing and believable world.
just my opinion

I understand people's problems with this movie. Yes, the story isn't original. Yes, the dialogue isn't the film's strongest point (it wasn't bad, just "disjointed" at times). But in terms of movie going experience, its truly an incredible film.
