  • I loved this video. Thanks for making and posting it! :)

  • I remember this shit. Thinking back... you gotta love the scut work to keep doing it. That's when I decided to drop out 4th year. There's too much bullshit dealing with other doctors that have no academic or social value. Teaching medicine has to change. I passed step 1 but you know what I practically had to teach myself that shit... fuck it and the whole educational/certification system. It's all designed to take your money.

  • OMG LMAO UUUUUGGGGGHHHHH good ol hospital life... gotta luv it!!!!

  • LMAO IAM A SURGICAL TECH & A PRE MED STUDENT AND YOU HAD IT EASY IN THAT OR SCENARIO LMAO

  • Is Gus a real surgeon? Did he just play act or did you actually film him? Cause I find it hard to believe that surgeons could really be like that.

    Love the memoirs btw :)

  • @michaelmatula oh trust me they are & much worse so are all of the other sx staff. How do I know?Because Iam a surgical tech & a pre med student. Let me tell you its either incredibly boaring & routine mu or super high tension like live wire. trust me when I say that its a god complex, balls of brass, all guts or no glory, shut the @#$! up or go home, roll with the big hitters, chew you up & spit you out,fly like a butterfly, sting like a bee, mean mothers kind of bad mama jammas & I mean it son

  • @niamh2739 Had to look up surgical tech as I'm from Australia and we don't have them here. How'd you get that job? You also going into med school to become a surgeon yourself?

I'm currently doing med science, which is kinda like the pre-med you do over there but we also become med techs by the end of it.

  • @michaelmatula

Lol well I got into scrubbing by going to school and training for two years. Here in the states I think our degrees work a bit differently than yours but I could be wrong anywho, when you go for two years it is called an Associates, then a Bachelors(4yrs) ,Masters (1y), then Doctorate(4yr min). Iam sure you knew that already but just in case I thought that I would cover all of my bases : ) That is cool that you become med techs at the end I wish it was like that here. It would

  • @niamh2739 Yeah, pretty much the same system regarding degrees here. Haha, I suppose you also learn latin on top of med school anyway! It is good, yeah, you can work in path labs casually whilst even at school outside of normal hours. Very interesting too, and you learn quite a lot of useful information about diagnostics and disase (we cover haematology, immunology, clinical biochem, clinical micro, and histopath in our later units). You're right, I am getting pretty sick of working min wage...

  • @niamh2739 ...in hospitality (think I'm up to 6 years now) for dodgy owners. Interesting you mention alternative medicine, I originally wanted to get into that field a long time ago, though got pretty disillusioned with finding out it's lack of evidence, regulation, and practitioners having actual medical knowledge (and so having the freedom to say whatever the hell they want, and not being held accountable). We have naturopaths, though I'm not sure about naturopathic physicians...

  • @niamh2739 ...So yeah, can't say I've made up my mind about alt med, though I do see elements of it that could be incorporated to medicine. Interesting. Are you working at all then? How much longer do you have to finish your bachelors? Sounds like you could go with a few things after.

  • @michaelmatula I could see where people would get that notion about alternative medecine howerver, here NP physicians undergo a rigorous curriculum that not only is pretty much identical to a traditional medical program it is also more extensive. They do 4-6 years of medschool, they intern the same amount of time, they have residencies and fellowships just like regular docs. The curriculum and so forth is governed and monitored by the same boards and committees as traditional med doc programs.

  • @michaelmatula only their studies are more focused on a different method of conduct & treatment and more specific modalities. I suppose I am biased though...I do not care for regular docs anymore. I suppose you could say that I have lost my taste for them. Here at least they are all in the insurance / pharmaceutical companies pockets. Managed care (HMO'S) pay huge premiums to docs that keep therecosts down which means poor patient care. Hospitals are the same keep the cost down, i.e... no matter

  • @michaelmatula the cost ! that cost is almost always patient care. Medicare here used to pay the docs pretty well for there services but, now all of that has gone to crap. Our economy is in the crapper medicare will not be there by the time my parents reach retirement age and this new health care reform is a hot mess. No one knows at this point where our future in medicine is going to be in 5-10 years. I mean we will always need docs but the issues come in when docs become tired of being

  • @michaelmatula managed themselves. They will be told how to manage their patients. what they can and cannot do for the patients and then will be held responsible for the outcomes. It will just worsen an already bad situation. Dont get me wrong not all of the docs are like that here but a great deal of them are. I am sure it is the same everywhere...Some do it for the money and some do it for all of the right reasons. The point I was trying to make is that I am no ones puppet and I am not about

  • @michaelmatula to go to school for 6-8 more years, fry myself out, get in debt for thousands and thousands of dollars, just to be under the governments thumb, go wherever they tell me whenever they want and have no choice in the way I treat my patients and get paid a government salary ! No way!!! Plus even if none of that went down which it is going down but even if it wasnt I would still not want to be a trad doc...it is true what they say about treating the symptoms and not the cause

  • @michaelmatula "treat em and street em" give the kid albuterol for the asthma but dont bother trying to rectify the cause, give that diabetic insulin but dont try and help them to manage their life style so that they have better quality of life just tell them that they are fat and need to loose weight despite the fact that is so difficult for a diabetic that it is nearly impossible without real help. Dont even get me started on our senior care. LOL : ) [BASHFUL] sorry I can get carried away

  • @michaelmatula sometimes...But Alternative medicine is a viable treatment option and it is off the cuff just enough that it will not fall under federal government jurisdiction"Obama"s health care reform"

I truely believe that more people can be helped by these doctors. There will be no insurance coverage but me personally I would do everything in my power to help, in a underprivelaged clinical setting, and probono if I have too. because that's the right thing to do. Lol : ) anywho ...

  • @michaelmatula enough with the heavy. I could decide to go into a science field like bio engineering, astronomy/physics, astrobiologist or even apply bio to a social science like anthropology or archaeology. I find them all fascinating and can still complete a doctorate (PHD)

Latin is not a problem for me. I already speak english and spanish and am working on italian, french and arabic. I find the latin based languages the easiest to pick up. Like I can understand a good portion of latin based

  • @niamh2739 As for being interested in those science fields, for myself I'd say all that stuff is incredibly fascinating to learn and pick up (I know a few amateur astronomers who do completely different things during the day), but the job of a scientist just isn't for me. Working on some obscure protein for 3 years while getting a doctorate, having to kiss the asses of higher up scientists, attending every talk/conference and basically having to beg for grant money, being stuck on your own...

  • @michaelmatula languages like portugese, but the non latin based languages I have a harder time with. As for work yes I work full time & go to school. I was going to school full time but for the moment I am attending part time. I still have about 2 years to go with my bachelors if I go back full time & everything goes as planned.

I do know what you mean about making so little it is hard.

A lab setting/Pathology is fascinating & it is such good experience. I am sure you can learn a great deal.

  • @niamh2739 Everything you've said about naturopathic physicians is new to me...I honestly haven't come across the types of practitioners you're talking about. And yeah, I completely agree with your stance on the whole "business before patients" idea that seems to be becoming more and more prevelant these days. It's not so bad in Aus, and we still do get medicare and free consultations and that sort of thing, though it's getting worse every year. Honestly, the brits have got the fundamental...

  • @niamh2739 ....idea of what health care should be like down pat, what with the NHS and everything. I've read up quite a bit on the tricks and trades of the pharmaceutical companies, and even just scratching the surface you can see why so many people don't trust docs these days. I wouldn't say they're all in the insurance/pharmaceutical companies pockets though, I know plenty of docs who are in it for the right reasons. I think the situation is much, much more extreme in the us than it is over...

  • @niamh2739 ...here, though we do seem to be beginning to adopt this greedy attitude. Health care and education used to be free, now we don't even own our train lines anymore...so who knows what'll happen. Really can't take a firm stance on any of it until I experience it for myself tbh, there's only so much you can read and talk to people to get the facts.

Jesus that is certainly a variety of things you could get into. I know how you feel though, being interested in TOO many fields of study...

  • @niamh2739 I'm up to my 4th degree lol, and haven't finished any of them. Science field would be interesting but I've found with scientists that you have to be really, really into that field and committed as all hell. Social sciences are always interesting, I've even considered counselling, but we all need a trade to pay the bills. Hypocritical as it sounds haha, I'd say focus on that first so you can free yourself up to go into other fields, particularly social science where there isn't work.

  • @niamh2739 ...in the labs for very long periods of times, thesis writing.....erch!! Again, you have to be SO committed and SO fascinated by what you're studying to put up with all that stuff. You could probably make that point about medicine, but the lifestyle of a doctor, as unpleasant as it is, something that suits me more. Still early days though so who knows what'll happen. Just gotta enjoy what we're doing atm (which I am) and have some sort of plan in sight. Good talk :)

  • @michaelmatula Oh and on the topic of alt med, here's some food for thought.

    virtualmentor(DOT)ama-assn(DOT)org/2011/06/ccas2-1106(DOT)html

  • @michaelmatula

Lol you are right great talk. I tried the link you suggested but my browser for some reason couldnt find it? anywho, the part about the science fields is true you do have to love it and I do know what you mean about paying the bills. : )I am glad that you enjoy what you do or what you will be doing. Thats wonderful in fact I am sure it will make for a fine physician and I wish you luck in your endeavors.

  • @niamh2739 Thank you, those are very kind words. Thats a shame, it really is a great article that addresses a great deal of those issues, as well as some interesting facts about the history of medicine. You can find it by typing in "virtual mentor" in google, going to the first AMA link, and clicking on the article titled "CAM Education in Medical Schools—A Critical Opportunity Missed". I'd highly suggest it, raises some interesting ideas

All the best with you too and your path ahead of you :)

  • @michaelmatula I will try that and thanks. : )

  • @michaelmatula

be so useful. I assume it qualifies you to work in a hospital or a lab somewhere and earn more money than min wage whilst attending school?

Actually no I have little interest in becoming a surgeon as a matter of fact sx kind of bores me now and the stress of the OR when sx is not boaring is not something I would choose to do for a life's career. Being a scrub tech was just a place to start but I don't even use it anymore. The schedules are not condusive to school hours.

  • @michaelmatula

Actually I want to become an alternative medecine doctor. I would love to choose Ayureveda however here in the states they do not consider Ayurevedic Physicians to be legitimate Doctors so there are no schools that offer programs "WITH DEGREES" that is. Also there are no legit governing boards or comittes here. There is one that is trying to bring it foward but that is not going well and not nearly fast enough. So basically I have to settle for becoming a Naturopathic physician.

  • @michaelmatula

I suppose I could attend school outside the country but I would not be able to practice here when I came back. I could choose traditional chinese medicine but then I would have to learn chinese too : ) dont get me wrong I would love to learn chinese(mandarin) but I thing med school is hard enough as it is without trowing, learning a language as complex as chinese(mandarin) into the mix.

I am going for my bachelr's in Biology currently and am still open to other science fields

  • All i want to do with my life is be a doctor. But I think it's of you that you did what you thought was right. Have fun, Ill be studying for the MCAT!!!

  • What a jerk! Why did you have to quit something that was so close to the finish line already. Why didn't you just do it for the SAKE of starting and finishing the journey? That is very selfish of you, U jerk! Looking for an EZ way out to satisfy your weakness of flesh and mind. There are medical doctors out there who do not choose to practice but instead do other things instead. I hate QUITTER & your low caricature of Costa Ricans as unambitious people. U R the real LOSER, not Costa Ricans.

  • @KCAASE this is fake lol... no one in their right mind quits after 3rd year lol..

  • lol!!! "quit sucking at sucking!!"

  • fucking assholes. .!!!
