16 gauges were very popular in America. In fact, you could say it was the best all around bore for sporting purposes. Until limitations came to prevent the use of lead shot. Hunters having to switch to steel shot needed a bigger bore for bigger shot to compensate for the loss in density. The 12 gauge became the go-to-all-around shotgun. I haven't done any intense research on all this. All that info was related to me by my grandpa who always swore by the old 16 gauge.
with that style of pistol grip and having a single trigger and being 12Ga, its most probably a model ordered by an American entity (importer or customer).
