Hello dude I like this idea of your box however, could you tell me if when you record inside the box, do you get any kind of boxy sound or too much bass in the recording, due the amp being trapped in the box? Thanks..
I think this would be the most easiest way for an Isolation cab, 'cuz this way, you can easily dump in any amp, or any speaker cabinet (depending on how big you want the isolation box), as well as multiple or different mics. Hence, different sounds in the isolation cabinet. If you were to build one with a speaker and a mic, You'd have to measure the speaker's diameter, find the right sounding one, and figure out the right wiring to get it functional, and you would use only one microphone for it.
Hey dude. You even make an iso cabinet where the speaker is built into the box instead of putting the amp in? Cause Im looking into making my own Iso Cab. Just dunno what speaker I ought to go for? I think the speaker is the first step.
Just dunno which to choose? Id like to go for a speaker which is unlikely to burst so I figure going for a higher wattage amp would be best? But then again will having a speaker which is too high wattage not get the same sound from an amp if it cant reach it.
@Aappleyard2a yes, that also works, I've seen some isolation boxes, where the speaker was built directly into the isolation box, so without a cabinet.
Some guitar speakers can take a bit more watt than others, but you can always take the standard route and use a V30.
Rather use a low wattage amp for recording. Using e.g. a tripple Rectifier with 150W into a single speaker could surely break that speaker at higher volumes
@guitarDouchebaggery I am actually looking into making a dual purpose iso cabinet. With both Guitar and Bass Speakers in it.. 2 seperate inputs and 1 mic output or maybe 2.. I wont use both at the same time.. (who konws might get somes cool sounds D: ) But Yeh. Im not so *in the know* with guitar stuff as I am primerily a Drummer hehe. Btw dude your intro really is awesome!
well, when recording bass guitars, most people just record directly, or mix a little bit of a miked amp with a direct signal. But there is nothing wrong with having your own way of recording bass
@guitarDouchebaggery ok thnx , i just thought if there was any difference in sound when building a bigger box in front of the speaker where the microphones is...i've built a box which is 30cm in depth and the size is the same high and width as the box is...the acoustic foam and my mic fits in it :)..
@tpulse2001 yes, that should work perfectly. When close miking, the room sound is less important. Also, because of the acoustic foam there shouldn't be any noticeable room sound anyways.
Great tutorial! But IMHO fiberglass isolation is better than acoustic foam. It's unpleasantly to work with, but result worth it (I've use it to build vocal booth).
you legend, this video solves so much, ive been wanting to make one but no sure what to do and this is just the answer to it all, thanks for putting this vid on youtube, im sure so many people will appreciate it
@PM3yer I think I'll do a video like that sometime. However, being good at recording/producing takes years of practice (also I would need to practice that a bit more ;))
it won't be possible to explain it all in a short video
longest intro ever, but good video

megadarkstar82 1 month ago in playlist Favorite videos
@megadarkstar82 no, I got no boxyness
it's just really dry sounding, no reverb whatsoever
the sound changes slightly when the box is closed, so if it's too bassy you just change the EQ of the amp a little

@guitarDouchebaggery Thanks man, I'm gonna start building mind soon thanks to your video, thanks..

@UncleTito72 you could put lots of stuff on top of it though
or you can also built it for just a 1x12 cab

One question, the space in front of the speaker, is there any rules how small it can be?? i mean that isolation box is huge ..
tpulse2001 5 months ago
@tpulse2001 it's not essential to build as big as this
just plan enough space that a mic (+acoustic foam) will fit in front of the speaker

What do you think about the axetrak OR randall Isolation box ?
xwigwango 7 months ago
@xwigwango I haven't tried those, they're probably also good.
My isolation box was cheaper than either one of them and you could fit several mics in there, use any cabinet that you want etc.
However, the randall or axetrax are far less space consuming. So there are pro's and cons.
guitarDouchebaggery 7 months ago
