Canning : "hey wanna hear E string?" #jreng

Drew : "Turn off canning, we lost $100 our salary"

Canning : "Sorry" turn down all of volume and tone in Gibson guitar.

  • I come and watch this everyday

  • if someone had a heart they would put up Broken Social Scenes performance on Conan, i need to see it again. NBC you fucked us all with your copyright shite

  • 4 out of 5 Canadians are a member of BSS

  • @AnonymousMuffin54 usually Brendan plays the Bass, but that's Sam Goldberg.

  • Who's the guy playing the bass? I always see him, but can't find out his name.

  • Great that they were on Letterman, but he could have at least said it was Brendan Canning's album ... which is a great album, btw. Not a bad track on it, and this song still makes me want to get up and bounce around like Liz.

  • 1:30 is a pretty epic shot

  • God, Liz's harmonizing on the last verse is sooo good. I wish she was on Forgiveness Rock Record. And franc10, I've been wondering what happened to that Conan Shoreline video too.

  • is that amy milan in the background?

  • Comment removed

  • They just look like they are having so much fun it makes me happy. Unlike other popular bands that look like zombies up on stage.

  • OMG Imagine living in Toronto and having to be around a city full of people like this? I'd jump out a window...

  • the video clip for this came on my phone, haha, glad i bought the phone now

  • Absolutely love this band. Great that Letterman has them on again and again. But, and I write this as a Canadian, they are dressed like they are really cold!!

  • love the little jig Canning does with his legs at 3:05

  • More like, the BEST city in North America. What beats it? LA? Detroit? New York? Every big American city is atleast 50 percent cess pool. Austin maybe is the lone exception, or some north eastern cities. Toronto is maybe 15%.

  • Is that Trey Anastasio?

  • @philsnk no

  • @Mineav sigh... you should listen to stars & sons then, one of their best songs from You Forgot it in People, the entire song is sang by him and it sounds awesome

  • Brendan can sing a tune, who knew? His vocals are surprisingly good, actually.

  • His album Somthing for all of us is really great stuff check it out if you haven't

  • @Mineav you know he sang stars and sons off you forgot it in people right?

  • @MrIndiemusic101 Yeah, that's one of my favorite BSS songs. I was joking.

  • Great band, good post

  • Just wait, once Forgiveness comes out, they'll need umbrellas for award nominations.

  • he loves toronto. he must of had a young female intern from there on the show...

  • Nice hat Andrew.

  • I remember we roundly panned this appearance on Broken Telephone last. in hindsight, we may have been a little harsh because the sound was appalling. kevin drew was definitely off form that night though!

  • Just a casual fan of the band, but I have this recorded from the tv and it sounds absolutely fine.. unless, you're referring to the mix or the quality of the band interplay? The broadcast sound itself was good.

  • it was the mixing, you can barely hear charles throughout the entire song! nothing against the broadcast at all :)

  • Ah, ok. I'll go back and have another listen to see (err, hear) what you're referring to. thanks.

  • What happened to Broken Telephone? :(

  • what song is this?

  • its called 'Churches Under The Stairs'

  • Keep this singer, get rid of Lisa "sleeping pills" Lobsinger.

  • i would have gone with lisa "lobstersinger!!!!!" lobsinger. maybe before you post something on youtube you should consult me first as to not make a fool of yourself.

  • Well, if youre not familiar with Land of Talk. I highly recomend you listen to their ep Aplause, Cheer, Boo, Hiss. and then after giving it a good listen, listen to their album Some Are Lakes. Lizzie Powell is super talented, you'll see how pleasant the songs are. Btw there's a new ep coming out from them called Fun & Laughter i heard one song from it and it totally kicks ass. Her voice and uncommon guitar playing (for a girl, tipically girls play soft stuff, she can do both) are just amazing.

  • who's that girl?

and one more: could anybody recall me name and previous/main band of bassplayer (not brendan, but this guy playing herre)? i've noticed that he plays with bss for some time but i stil cannot remember his name.

  • The girl is Elizabeth Powell from Land of Talk and the bassist I believe is Sammy Goldberg from the band Hawaii, though I'm not really familiar with either band's work.

  • Bass = Charles Spearin. You can do the rest of the research now.

  • c'mon! i know how charles looks like and what's more he's playing (muted) guitar in this performance. look carefully.

the basist in this video is, as somebody said, sammy goldberg - check google-graphics and compare stubbly faces. : >

  • spearin is playing the SG on the right.. although you can't hear him

  • What's the name of this song again?

  • Churches Under the Stairs. I hope it did not take 5 days for someone to answer you?

  • churches under the stairs

  • Great song, great band, great performance. I've posted an acoustic version of this song if anyone is interested.

  • It looks like Brendan's scarf is holding his head straight up :P

  • pretty good eh?

  • I like the way she dances

  • The bass player was picked up from the band "why."

They played Omaha NE last year. dont know if he is still with the band?

  • WAIT! Thats is why's bassist HA! I thought the guy looked familiar.

  • I should clear that up. It was Why's guitarist playing bass. B.S.S. change who is playing what instrument just about every song.

  • God, I wish Elizabeth's backing vocals were on the album version. Her harmonizing near the end is gorgeous.

  • that looksl ike the chick from land of talk. i'm probably wrong

  • No your right, its is Liz Powell from Land Of Talk. She sings with BBS alot when Feist & Emily are busy

  • Broken Bocial Scene

  • why aren't there very many of them here? which ones are on stage? who is that singing? where's the keys and things? Why don't they sound all ambient and slow and bss-y? :'( explain please, someone.

  • BSS doesnt often tour with the entire band because so many of them are off on their own projects. The guy with the dark hair is Kevin Drew, the guy who looks like he came straight from the 70s is Brendan Canning. This is from Brendan Cannings album from the BSS presents... series so it does sound a little different from some other material because its mostly written by Canning instead of being a collaboration

  • Looks like Canning is using Andrew Whiteman's guitar. Kinda surprised he wasn't playing bass.

  • actually these are the core members except for the girl. Aren't they Charles Spearin and Andrew Whiteman on the flanks?

  • Yeah, Whiteman on the far left (who seems to be creating most of lead guitar sounds/riffs) and Spearin on the far right, whose amp either isn't turned up very loud or isn't working...or something.

  • I really don't think Charles Spearin's guitar is plugged in :P

  • Heh why did Letterman go on about his tie? So random.

  • Jennifer Aniston gave it to him earlier in the show because it was from a photoshoot or something where that's all she was wearing. Mediocre comedy ensued.

  • How every sentence including Jennifer Aniston should end "mediocre comedy ensued"

  • whos that babe!!!

  • Elizabeth Powell of Land of Talk

  • Andrew's hat looks like bad 80's hair from a distance.

  • I don't understand why these Guys didn't get any JUNO nominations??? But Shit like Nickleback does??

  • dude the Junos are a fucking joke... dont waste your time watching the fucking Junos... or anything on CBC.... Nickleback.... honestly... the worst band in the world...

  • amen

  • @dlistedbitch because this is good music and people like shitty music thats why there were no nominations

  • @dlistedbitch because this is good music and people like shitty music thats why there were no nominations

  • @dlistedbitch because this is good music and people like horrible music thats why there were no nominations

  • @dlistedbitch Because the Junos are the typically big label shit that assumes that sales = talent/quality. It's the kind of industry that introduces artists at shows solely with the stat on how many albums they've sold.

  • @dlistedbitch coz this is art, not commercial music ;)

  • He was wearing that shirt last night in Houston

  • Move to Austin!

  • No you

  • i like this song what's it called?

  • churches under the stairs

  • WTF happened to the 7/4 shoreline vid with feist and emily on conan o'brien

  • Man, I had that recorded on my computer and then my hard drive tried to commit suicide and I lost it. Love to see that again.

  • I'm glad I'm not the only one going crazy....So it is gone! CRAP. I miss it

  • @franc10 I was trying to find that video myself. That was a great performance.

  • Comment removed

  • @franc10 I uploaded it to Vimeo due to NBC Universals Copyright claim. Check it the awesomeness. vimeo[DOT]com/12196348

  • @franc10 it got taken down, but it's on google

  • @stubert311

Can't find a link. Can you?

  • @franc10

DUDE!!! I know what you're talking about. I used to love watching that vid. They look like they were having so much fun.

  • @franc10 "More guitars. We need more guitars."

  • ! i was hoping someone would post this! thanks mate!

  • i was wondering who she was when i saw them in st pete

  • Charles Spearin is the man!

  • I think they played Craig Ferguson as well around the same time as this, did anyone catch that performance?

  • really? like days apart?

  • i love liz powell.

    and bss.

    and lot.

  • the song is much better live than on the record

  • I miss Amy =(

  • Agreed!

  • Whatever....amazing singers....take your comments back to Broadway....Canning is wicked!

  • What a waste of an awesome band!

  • YOU'RE the waste.

    suck on that.

  • THATS RIGHT..TORONTO!!!

  • Liz Powell from Land of Talk??????

When I saw them a few months ago, it was just BSS because Land of Talk had to cancel, so I'm not sure who that is.

    Best song on the album

  • Yeah, it's Liz Powell. She played with them at the Toronto show I saw.

  • Go Brendan!

  • i love letterman..toronto, one of the great cities in north america

  • Not the greatest singers but God, AREN'T THEY COOL?!?!?!

  • Thanks for the upload! They sounded great last night.

  • hey whats this song called?

  • The song is called Churches under the Stairs, it's on Broken Social Scene presents... Brendan Canning's "Something for all of us".
