  • WHERE did i hear this song before?

  • @hateboardlove

    You mad bro?

  • The thing that irks me is he played at an Obama event and Obama's like Bush on steroids. Even more war, death, torture, bankruptcy and corporate handouts. None the less, the song is amazing.

  • im a bit young and i really dont understand why???? we are sending people over in the middle east to die? whyyyy? i dont even know what country they are in now. can someone explain? i thought obama wanted the troops sent home? why are they there? my theory is that when he got in to office he learned some secret that for some reason the government hides from us. and that secret means we need to keep fighting?

  • @glowingcactus I hate to say it, but look up the Balefore agreements back in the early 1900's and you'll learn testaments as to how the states inherited britains problems and why our friends are out there in the field shooting and being shot at. its all just a shame, but what has to be done has to be done. I dont know what would happen if we werent over sea's, but i do know its a lose lose situation.

  • I love You conor.

  • 20 people need to go to see an ear doctor

  • Anyone who doesn't think Conor is this generation's Bob Dylan-clearly isn't listening.

  • @sneakyabcd then why would you watch this video?

  • @heyjude97 I DONT WATCH THE STUPID VIDEO. MY retard brother plays it so loud i can hear it everywhere in my house so i thought i would tell your cock suckers how much i hate this song

  • @sneakyabcd I like your brother. Tell him I said 'Hi.'

  • this is the first song i heard from him, and i fell in love... it was the exact recording of THIS show... mess ups and all =p

  • Some people take months writing a song and it's just okay.

Conor Oberst writes something up really quick on a ferry and it's genius, exactly perfect and mind-blowing right away.

  • I hated to break the 420, but I had to like it.

  • awww he messed up....but its cute!! i love conor

  • I don't know what my political status is... but I do agree with every word Conor sings...

  • thank you, thank you, thank you. BRIGHT EYES!

  • I thought this was Bob Dylan. Both men amazing.

    Conor Oberst is magical.

  • @djw232 Hahahaha, you don't listen to enough Bob Dylan : ) I agree though, this guy's something special.

  • A lot of it is basically "I hate stupid people, why can't the world be more like me".

No no no...This guy is really unique, of course. Like Jesus.....

  • @madzangels if you actually put some thought into your daily life, you would see his lyrics actually do have a lot of meaning for people. personally i can reflect on everything i do and make more confident decisions in my life knowing other people feel the same way. and he is so well spoken and intellegent, he has a natural ability to make people who feel like an outcast feel involved in life again.

  • @madzangels and what exctly is your problem anyway? "yeah he's real unique, like jesus.." are you jealous cause people can relate to him and not to you? what have you done? and what makes liking him so wrong? i think it's a pretty funny joke that you sit here and hate on him like you're any better.

and btw, clearly 2pac didn't have enough influence on you cause you're sitting here hatin instead of improving anything in your life or the world. fuckin FAIL.

  • @hateboardlove You have had an arguement with yourself, my post was a sarcastic response to someone else you bloody idiot!! I LIKE Bright Eyes a lot, I even have a guitar I can show you with his fkn signature on it.

So consider this - you've made a complete idiot out of yourself for jumping on the first comment you saw without understanding it's context.

Now curl your tail between your legs, and fuck off. Your just like most other over-sensitive youtubbies on this site!! Big fucking baby!

  • Even if someone doesn't give a fuck about this guy and his music, it DOESN'T BOTHER ME OR MY LIFE IN ANYWAY WHICH WAY!! So let humans being be human beings will you, you can't control peoples opinions or get them to like the music you like or believe the things you believe. You have certainly shown, Bright Eyes have had NO influence on you WHATSOEVER!! FUCKING FAIL

  • @hateboardlove I stick to my original comment - I don't need to contextualize it for morons sorry.

You spend your days trolling for opininos against yours, so you can vent some underlying anger you have.

You are the major FAIL sunshine :)

  • @madzangels haha. i wasn't asking for clarification, thanks. i was making a point; you sit and talk shit about somebody speaking out about things that are wrong in the world? actually oberst is unique, for your information, because he actually does make a difference in peoples lives.

you're simply asking for somebody like myself, with different opinions, to argue with you by commenting on shit you don't even like with stupid baseless insults. why would you even say anything?

  • @madzangels and if watching videos by bands i like, then afterward going to make a comment, seeing somebody as stupid as yourself commenting some bullshit, and giving my opinion on yours is considered trolling, I GUESS I'M GUILTY! hahaha and if that is trolling, what is what you're doing called? going to bands you don't like, on songs you don't listen to, commenting on shit you don't care about? hahaha.. didn't mom ever tell you if you don't have anything nice to say, then shut the fuck up!?

  • I'm scared of saying I don't like this guy because I'll get loads of hate mail!! lol! I listened to "First day" and since that song it's just gone downhill from there, I don't see why sprouting an opinion shared by millions of people world-wide over 2 or 3 chords makes you very special....I just don't get it..If it's his lyrics, then 2pac was a better lyricalist IMO. Just my opinion guys so please don't get your ass cracking whips out lol Any particular songs you would think to recommend..?

  • Absolutely amazing.

  • yeah cause the president is just handing out dirty coke to the ghetto's.. give me a break

  • gotta love the first amendment

  • amen. this is fucking kick ass.

  • freedom of speech at its finest.

  • He kind of reminds me of Isaac Brock, lead singer of Modest Mouse.

    Ever heard of him? =D

  • i was at this show. the atmosphere was ecstatic for this song.

  • Conor is soo genious. He's definately one of the greatest minds around. lol

  • you guys are mostly real gay

  • Brilliant. What i like about conor is that its not all negative. I feel his music covers the full spectrum of human emotions and behaviours. What i get from his music is that we're all the same. We are all infinitly flawed as well as perfect, and its all how you percieve it.

  • this song is amazing!!!!

    no wait he is!

  • hes brilliant. his lyrics are incredible. I dont care what people say. to me his lyrics are honest.

  • No one can be Dylan but Dylan...I'm not a fan of bright eyes but this song is great, finally he writes a song that doesn't involve cutting wrists and self hatred. I just wish his audience would move around more, they tend to make his live shows very bland and boring.

  • bright eyes has NEVER sung songs about cutting his wrists..... and yea obviously no one can be Dylan but Dylan,he's one of a kind. but Conor Oberst has a unique, poetic, and brilliant writing and musical style.. like Bob Dylan does... ok so maybe his hair is black, and he has a scene kid haircut, that doesn't mean he sings about cutting his wrists and self hatred-because he doesnt. you shouldn't just assume things, you should actually look up the facts before you make judgements.

  • "But now I dont care I could go anywhere with you And Id probably be happy

thats not depressing. u just have to look at it in the grand scale. and as for the BOO HOO..that's a little immature..I'm just saying. I'm not getting angry or anything I'm simply saying that yes, People sometimes write sad lyrics b/c they can't help it, but they also write happy ones. Bob Dylan's written PLENTY of sad lyrics about heartbreak and just real life stuff. It's human nature. (continues...)

  • (conitnued...) People who write songs write from experiences Everyone has their sad days and everyone has their happy days...I'm not angry or spiteful. I just want you to know that and understand. I listen to Conor Oberst and it makes me the happiest person in the world when I do. Because he writes about things that people can relate to, because everyone's gone through the good and the bad and he's just there to tell you your not alone.

  • I'm sorry you're so angry, but music is not meant to influence or create feelings, but to identify ones that already exist and make you feel comfortable with them. Even if you don't believe that, I hope you can agree that Conor is a great songwriter, and we haven't seen a songwriter like this in decades.

Also, Conor has written a very wide variety of songs, and people misunderstand the ones that aren't like First Day of My Life.

  • Sorry, gotta chime in again, even though everyone has said this --

To my knowledge (and I have every one of his albums, singles, EPs, and compilations) he has never sung a song about cutting. Believe me, I would recognize a song about cutting, and there are a lot of them.

  • this is priceless in so many ways

  • this was incredible

  • is he the new of bob dylan????

    he is bright!!

  • @MultiMAUU lol nice play on words;)

  • Holy crap. Wow. And he wrote that a couple of hours before playing that?

  • i saw him live in Portsmouth, England and he played this song with the music stand reading the lyrics from it like in this video. He also said that he had wrote the song just prior to the gig.

  • bob dylan

  • Lol. He doesnt like being called the new bob dylan or in relation. He wrote this song and had it on i-tunes for free because he was pissed about taxes.

  • I dont care what he likes

  • Well that mutha fkn great for you. stfu. its called a comment for a reason.

  • lol u mad?

  • No. :] just sayinnnnnnnngg.

  • @aidagrotesque I think taxes might have been the least of his concerns?

  • @sllimretrac Not like you would knoww him or any of his concerns or ideal concerns.

  • @aidagrotesque I'm just saying Desaparecidos is kind of a pretty socialist side-project. You can hear a lot of his concerns in the song here and their songs and the only problem he really seems to have with taxes is the current distribution is unfair for the working and middle classes. Not that it really matters.

  • @sllimretrac UM this song isnt a recent song sweetie.

  • connor is awesome lol

  • when he said one of the lyrics wrong i just giggled :)

  • Why is there that hard ass shouting stuff at a Bright Eyes show?

  • i was at this gig, the atmosphere was so ecstatic and supportive. the iraq war was in full swing and every was getting sick to the back teeth with bush... it was almost impossible not to cry out in affirmation with what he was singing.

  • I love Conor. He is a music mastermind.

  • hes not talking about obama,(obama does not use dogma to sway people)

he's talking about george bush hence the lyrics

"When the president talks to God

I wonder which one plays the better cop

We should find some jobs. the ghetto's broke

No, they're lazy, GEORGE, I say we don't

Just give 'em more liquor stores and dirty coke

    That's what God recommends"

  • Holy shit, that was awesome.

  • exactly my impression. He fucked that shit up! Eloquence in anger and disgust, bravo!

  • well apparently you cant do it since we dont see you on here or on tv writing incredible songs like conor does

  • popularity decides skill?

    lololololololollol

  • im just saying that conor can write a better song than pretty much anyone around today.

  • idk bout all that

    paper planes > lime tree

just sayin, why so bland - keep listening.

  • i guess its just personal taste. ill take any song by conor over pretty much anything

  • i was here! it was the first time i saw him live too. amazing!

  • haha i love it when he messes up

  • im in the army and this war is fucking a waste of time.theres other places way more important for us to spend are time, money, and resources.one of those places being are own country.conor is a fucking genius and one of the greatest song writers of our time.and it takes misses to get hits.

  • @burnintrees420 Dude the word you're looking for is "our", not "are". Take a chill pill.

  • @burnintrees420

you need to brush up on your grammar. its OUR. not are.

  • @burnintrees420 : conor > barack + george...it's that simple...the politicians have their own interests in mind...we've got to pull the political system back into the realm of reality...debt needs to be reduced...these stupid wars need to be stopped...(esp., iraq was a mistake -- THERE WERE NO WMD...HELLO???)...

  • protest songs own life and obama owns life x2

  • obama does not own life, that's kinda weird...he's just a guy. this song does own life though.

  • i love protest songs, they really show what time people were living in

  • Love Conor Oberst

    What a legend

  • im in the army, and i like this song. i used to pound the streets every night. punk rock runs through my veins, but i am pretty sure that im not fighting this fight because i believe in the war, or why im going to a foreign country for some fucked up politicians agenda. but we are here, and im fighting because i love my country, but no matter how much training i have had, or how much indoctrination i have recieved, i still fear my government. i love my country and i am willing to die for it.

  • thanks for doin what you do

  • lol, thats the biggest wad of denial ever written. just admit it. we all know joining the army is pointless

  • maybe it is pointless to you man. but you DEFINITELY dont have the guts to join, and stand up for something. im not gonna knock you down, but you should be thankful that people like me exist. im defending your right to say these stupid things on youtube, and defending your rights as a citizen of these beautiful united states. i am not in denial son, im just crazy enough to risk my life for individuals like yourself. youre welcome.

  • it makes sense, youre only 14. i would have cut my own nuts off rather than think about joining the service at your age. just lay off the smokes dude. they really are bad for you son,

  • I love the random guy who yells "Fuck Bush!"

  • "ilovemingers" your such a fuckin loser, if you dont like this your just part of the brainwashed majority, fuck you, fuck your people, and fuck your opinion....LETS HERE IT FOR THE REBELLION!

  • when the president talks to god there is no response....as there is no god, but Damn is this song ever awsome, FUCK the government, and if you have a problem with this song, the way he sings it, or this band,,,,, then fuck off...haha

  • uhh so clicking the link, watching the video, means you were forced?

  • lol

  • oh you must really hate this song if you listened to it twice

  • that last comment is pretty rediculous conor (in my opinion) is extremely smart

  • You mean he might be able to spell 'ridiculous' properly? Wow.

  • You must be a fucking IDIOT, really.

  • you just dont get the song

  • hahahahahahahaha yes. Conor is deffinately really rich from all those "stupid little punk girls". i mean, he doesnt write good songs or sing or play music cause he enjoys it. He couldnt possibly do that. Fuck im sick of people being so critical and cynical why do you even bother wasting your time with insults?

dont talk about limited talent until you can top what this guy has done you jerk.

    FUCK YOU

  • I usually don't bother answering morons on youtube, but you're really ignorant.

It doesn't matter if most of the people agree with the message, but it matters to spread it and speak up.

Also.. claiming that one of the best song writers in the world has extremely limited talent is kind of stupid.

I bet you are the type singing "baby I love you so's.." sweetly on your guitar. Crying because you don't get any recognition from your boring shi t.

  • It was cute when he stumbled on some of the words. That is great that he wrote this.

  • when did bush ever want more liquor stores and cocaine?

  • when bush was in school he had a drug prob. that where he came up with that

  • I love how truthful conor is..he is pretty awesome

  • Lol. Good one, Ahbrighteyes3124. Very funny.

  • I dont know.I think it makes sense.I'm not saying its all right.I like that he sort of gave everything a different perspective, making you wonder what type of person God is.

  • "type of person god is" lol

  • cutest thing ever

  • what's that?

  • i was just saying him performing it was really cute hah

  • awesome, I'm not even all about busting on people or pointing fingers.

    just plain old damn good

  • Comment removed

  • I think is a little Fucked up. Don't think Bush but talked to his bottle of booze. Thanks Connor for the great, off the wall. truthful song

  • the whole concept of rating comments and rating videos is stupid, it teaches you to rate and judge everything, people need to chill out on the rating and just go with it, cuz its turning everyone into a bunch of assholes

  • this is so powerful! I wish I had been there

  • always gives chills.

  • shit... gave me chills

  • the people who hate this song are probably either jesus freaks or bush supporters

  • or they're just complete idiots... oh yeah you already covered that... :)

  • Or they're like 90% of America who know nothing about the president or world affairs. You think the song is being "deep" and addressing the issues. The only problem with that would be that it doesn't address an issue, not specifically anyway. Tons of bands have written songs saying "Bush sux lol" but never say why. Because if they did say why and addressed an issue, then it wouldn't be a good song. Tune into BBC and educate yourself you fucking moron. I'm not Christian, and not a Bush supporter.

  • Wow. You sound like you "know" something about world affairs. I listen to BBC and NPR and I don't know why you would think that this song is uneducated. If you would like for me to lay out the reasons that Bush was a bad president, I could do it for you.

  • I didn't say the song was uneducated, just the person who made the comment. I enjoy Bright Eyes, don't get me wrong, but retarded youtube comments are written by the scourge of the Earth- the anti-intellectuals, the blind followers, etc.

Now, onto the song, yeah he does slightly address issues, but again. Not specifically. Which I explained in the last comment, wouldn't make it a good song, but it also doesn't necessitate that Oberst knows much more about World affairs than the average person.

  • Ah, I see. Well, when you said "Tune into BBC and educate yourself you fucking moron," I did not understand that you were talking about the previous commentator; I thought you were saying that Oberst needed to educate himself. The song: I think you would need a much longer song to truly address an issue. It would need to be more of a speech than a barely three minute diddly. Personally, I like this song because I think the lyrics and theme are very cleverly put together.

  • Also, what songs have you listened to that are good solid political criticisms? (I'm not being argumentative by the way, I'm just curious, because I like to listen to music that has some sort of meaning).

  • Well, it's not exactly this genre, but "Take The Power Back" by Rage Against The Machine outlines issues in school systems and such. I like to think that it was done rather well too.

  • Hmm...I thought the sound was okay and I kinda get their angle, but I had some problems with it's message:

    1) I didn't really get who they were saying needed to take the power back...were they talking about the students? Wouldn't they have to have had the power at some point in order to take it back?

    2) I didn't really like how they blamed the school system for mass ignorance. The reality is that there will always be a majority of folks who don't know how to think for themselves...

  • Pretty much anything by Rage Against the Machine.

  • I think the issue is the whole God thing...

  • Does your "tolerant" god promote calling other people you disagree with "cocks"?

    Grats.

  • 1) Not my God, I'm Agnostic. Good game.

    2) I never said the Christian God was tolerant.

    3) If anything, the very action of saying that the problem with the song was acknowledging that there was a "God" IS the definition of "intolerant".

Congratulations, everyone reading this now knows you're a retard.

  • huh what?

also, ulu is a pretty nice venue, i went there the other week.

  • Or, It's the case they can't appreciate ascetic value. It's obvious this song doesn't address matters of fact, but is interesting none the less.

  • lol i like how he fucked up and it was all chill by the fans that was badass!!!

  • Yeah, he's a real human being, that's refreshing!!

  • He's a good songwriter and a good musician. I wish he wouldn't get pissed before performances.

  • i like the guy who screams fuck bush randomly? :D

  • lmfao, priceless

  • you rule !!

  • Sure, Oberst isn't as good as Dylan but that's no reason to knock him. This song is still crazy powerful and more intrusive than anything else out there. And the line from "It's Alright Ma" is non-comparable to this song. Dylan is saying that president is just a man, just like the rest of us - not some sort of superhuman like we all expect them to be.

Oberst, on the other hand, is outright tearing the president a new one for continuously claiming that God is on his side.

  • yay!!!

  • This video just made me a lifetime fan. =]

  • Hey! - what happened to the video of him performing this song on Jay Leno, wearing the cowboy hat and all?

That got alot of attention. Did NBC remove it from youtube? And if so, anyone know if there's anywhere else to find it? I wanted to send it to some friends.

    Any advice??? thx!

  • fuck i know, i just wanted to find it again and couldnt

  • there's one that someone titled "when george bush talks to god." it's the same performance, just titled dumb.

  • Wow - THANKS nacho! I was JUST wishing the other day that I could send this to a friend and now I can. It's SUCH a great performance. I hope it doesn't get removed again - that was annoying.

    Thanks!!

  • hes pretty much the most amazing boy on the earth <3<3

  • 'aww fuck Let me start this again'

    -crowd cheers- xD!

  • he says "i wrote this song on the fairy today i hope you like it"

  • what does he say in the beginning? i can't understand a thing.

  • He says, "I wrote this song on the ferry today -- see if I can play it."

  • sounds like a poem

  • love it, very Bob Dylan like

  • Closer to Phil Ochs (Draft Dodger Rag, Here's to the State of Mississippi, I'm Not a Marchin' Anymore).

  • yah, agreed!! he's great!!

  • you go boy
