1977 - Ahh, 1977, I was but 11 going on 12 (october), now I'm 46. and I still love this (and the entire Out Of The Blue album) song. Jeff Lynne knows how to turn out a good song. Plenty here to enjoy.
I am a huge fan of many great bands, but ELO is without a doubt the best of all time. I absolutely love them, I hope and pray that they can tour down under to AUSTRALIA one day.. Love you Jeff Lynne and ELO..Thanks for the music you have brought into my life..It truly takes me back to a beautiful time when life was less complicated and fun..
ELO is really one of the best bands of their time. They have a very diverse set of songs, all songs are meticulously perfected, and they have the BEST back-up vocals I've ever heard (this is coming from a die-hard Aerosmith and Van Halen fan). They are just plain epic.
Not only was the 60s 70s and 80s great music, but for those of us who were around when great bands began, it holds great memories of times when we held so many hopes and dreams, we had no major responsiblities and the world was ours for the picking. We also believed nothing bad could ever happen in our lives. Those youthful memories happen but once in a lifetime and the music holds those incredible memories and that is one powerful bond. No wonder we love our old school music so much.
This is one of their best efforts. I was a 6 year old when this song came out. Lucky for me my elder sister who was 14 at the time got the record. What a wonderful early experience of music i had. Excellent. :D
awesome song. definitely futuristic for the time, still doesn't really sound too dated for a 70s tune. 'Telephone Line' is another great ELO tune. "Strange Magic', another... oh, and 'Living Thing', and ...
I can listen to this song on loop for unusual amounts of time.
Does anyone else have a hallucination of traveling through space faster than the speed of light while sitting in a lazyboy planted on the head of a giant space octopus that's smoking a joint while watching the stars be born?
It's the amazing technology that allows an "artist" to: Slap together a track, Sing about crack, Loop back-to-back, then Play it all back (in less than an hour), that *in itself* instills the sort of laziness that's heard in some new music. ELO's Jeff Lynne was known to compose his "pop" songs -- treating them as real evolving compositions. Any artist can make love with the passion that is their art, or simply slam it against the wall -- the proof is 25+ years later if we're still listening...
E.L.O. will always br the most underrated group of all time !! feel sorry for the people who've never experienced music like this !! what a musical genius Jeff Lynne is !! i had the pleasure of seeing them live in the 80's !! wish everyone now a days could have appreciated this kind of music instead of all the pure crap they play now !!!!
@1967teej I couldn't agree with you more. I have 3 young children and i have introduced them to this amazing band and they absolutely love them..My 12 year old went shopping the other day with my sister and came back home with an ELO cd and was i so proud of her..My job is done haha..

@MrGreglander But how can we top, partying, drinking, having unprotected sex, smoking a joint while listening to great songs that have nothing to do with the phrase "Down with corporations, man!" We're gonna need a miracle to top THAT!
@NarutorRasengan silly. there is plenty of good music out there; new and old, you ain't looking hard enough! internet killed the radio star, so there is no excuse for nostalgia, that shit will make you OLD, man. click on my name and look at my profile picture ; that is me from last year (when i was 44, my hair is short now and i look even younger now) as you can plainly see i have not aged since i was 25; why? because i don't believe in nostalgia! relate to the past wisely...
@grissomc1218 People like this? Well you truly think highly of yourself. I posted that comment in admiration of the great music of their time. Sure we have innovative technology to gloat about but it's because of that that makes us lazy and unwilling to pick up a book and read about things we don't know other than googling it. And by your comment, it's like your implying that older generations are less advance and practically dumber.
@grissomc1218 And also, I thank the old people not by them fucking up our earth, it was the use of resources to give us younger folks a better lifestyle. They learn their mistakes by destruction, so that experience was passed down, not because they're dumb. You have no respect for your elders at all. Are you saying that your parents are less intelligent too? I doubt you even think that. Think before you speak.
@NarutorRasengan how does it feel to be stupid lolz i love catching people speaking their ignorant minds hahha if you comment back youll only prove your brain truly is miniscule
My Friend Scott...growing up as kids...Loved him man and he's gone now from Cancer...He loved this album and I'll always think of him when i hear this stuff...RIP Scott...
I turn to stone when I'm in a position to converse with my dad on an equalibrial level something that very rarely ocurse although he is the man who inspires me to the man that i am.I can not by any stretch of the imagination talk to him as though he is my equal.Despite all this his taiste in music is and I know this now having doubted this for many years is awe inspiring.
This was one of my all time favorite bands when I was a kid in the late 1970's and early 1980's. They were so unique and super cool. They deserve their respect today. I like all of ELO'S songs they can put my bad mood back into a happy one. Reading many others comments in here the one of edseljim dedicating to his friend Bear was cool. I will dedicate this to his friend Bear too.
A time when they made good music for the mind, unlike today. Today's music is used as a tool for mind control. Watch " Dr Colin Ross on C.I.A mind control" Learn the truth behind all the evil in today's evil minded society. Peace out.
@7711ish That is so true, there is a Canadian dude on youtube going viral talking about how youtube has taken all the local bands off of the music page and only has pop artists' music up now. Btw I use the term "artist" very liberally in this comment! To prove so many points let me say this, how is beyonnce a musician? No melody, shit lyrics, how is this bitch in music???
@mmaaxx1198 Because she's pretty and shakes her ass. i guess that's all that's all that's required these days. I still don't know how GaGa is so popular.
@ToddSweeneyOnce I'm disagreeing with you that beyonnce is pretty, dumb bitches are not pretty to me, the lack of brains, the biblical whores, turn me off, kills all "skin deep" beauty!
@mmaaxx1198 true. no such thing a "music" anymore. nothing like the oldies. even the ramones and the beach boys can't be beaten by anyone or enything. hence the reason why all these new artists copy old music
yes..the days when AM radio was still king....and most artists were famous and liked because of indiviual talent, songwriting skills , vocal skill and musicianship.
Anyone know the lyrics to the fast spoken bridge? I can't quite get all the words...And after that, maybe you can help me out with the words to "Louie Louie"...haha... Thanks for posting this great song..ELO rocks...All hail...
sad to see what the music industry has become, a huge self replicating lump of oatmeal, tasteless and featureless, cranking out the same boring, bland crap over and over and over again.
people have been force fed crap music for so long they have been desensitized, unable to tell good music even if it bit them in the ass.
if you dislike this song, or anything from the 70's or 80's, then I'm afraid your one of those people.
This is music of substance and style. It took thought and creativity to make it. This is the dividing line between what we had and what is dropped steaming on the ground for us these days. Where are the powerful, creative minds that once were? I mourn our collective loss while enjoying this excellent work.
I agree that rap is crap. It takes very little talent to do since you don't need to know musical notes. Rhythm is fine but I just think that people that say they don't like music like ELO are obviously deluded and like crashy crap...like Bullet for my valentine...that's not even music...it's anger riding on the coattails of Nirvana!
I agree with wejustgotcolortv. Yea, most of the music today is horrible (that Justin Beiber, Miley Cyrus, and popular hip hop starts like lil wayne and Drake). However, as far as music these days goes, the good rap stars as describes below really do make good music. These stars talk about political activism.I am a huge fan of the golden oldies, and other bands such as ELO, the kinks, Bob Dylan, to name a few.
I'm not surprised to see Hate Tanks on YouTube, but I am surprised to see Hate Tank ELO fans. This music is great but so is a lot of Hip Hop. A Tribe Called Quest, Wu-Tang Clan, KRS-One, De La Soul, Public Enemy, just to name five. Free your mind and your ass will follow!
@WeJustGotColorTV ..i can't argue with that....Public Enemy , KRS_One, Run Dmc, L.L. Cool . J (his 80's 90's stuff) 3rd Bass yep i hear you..that also goes for alot of the "metal" stuff like "Iron Maiden","Ozzy' and Guns and Roses
I have this theory of why entertainment/fads/technologies are the way they are now. Because of the internet and the closest the world has been to reachable instant communication has made a kind of melting pot of eras. anything recorded within the last 100 years can be instantly accessed. People say (mostly older people but me too..er...i try not to anymore) that music is no longer creative or of quality but i believe that this type of music is a kind of bad response the era melting pot? idk hmm
Every single person is entitled to their own taste in music 4 cripe sakes! It ain't cool to judge other peoples taste. Take it from someone who's been taking a history of rock and roll class and who happens to a hard core musical genius
@stupidgenius>>>Paul Davis was the 80s guy behind songs like "i go crazy" and "cool night" and "65 love affair"....great artist......and by the way....he's dead..
Who the fuck do you think you are calling me a pussy for liking a song... first of all what song was it and aint the pussy who comments on someones profile then blocks them from commenting back you twat!
ELO was my friends favorite as we were growing up. Everytime I hear ELO, I think of him. It has been 14 years since he died. His name was Steve, but we all called him BEAR. This song is for you BEAR.
I had a teacher in the 80's say their concert changed his life. I never understood why though. I knew another lady who said the same thing about Herman's Hermits. Never got that one either.
I'm so jealous. I'm 17, so I never got that chance. However, I was lucky enough to catch Rush, AC/DC, and Earth Wind and Fire before they all fell off the face of the planet.
I'm sorry, dude. It was gr8 growing up with this music. Love ELO and EWF! I bet u would also love Boston, Kansas, Journey, Foreigner. Oh, and for a little variety, try Paul Davis. He may be one u haven't heard b4.
Totally different style of music with him, but some really cool hits back then. I 4got to mention that if u like EWF, u should listen to Brothers Johnson doing Stomp and Strawberry Letter 23. Enjoy!
It's not surprising to see songs like this and others from that era coming back into popularity. But the one thing I do miss is the Album art and liner notes - CDs and iTunes have done away with that, and if you're my age, you miss it. The album art was a way to continue the theme of the album or just give a mood. Now it's a thumbnail image.
ELO is odd in that they are were a rock group, but also a simply pop group. The pop stations played ELO all the time back in the day, but rock stations didn't play them as much back then. "Turn To Stone," "Telephone Line," & "Strange Magic" were on the Rock channels, but songs like "Shine a Little Love," "Living Thing," "Sweet Talking Woman," &"Mr Blue Sky" stayed primarily on the pop channels. Hall and Oates did something similar in that they crossed the line between Rock, Pop & R&B/Soul.
1977 - Ahh, 1977, I was but 11 going on 12 (october), now I'm 46. and I still love this (and the entire Out Of The Blue album) song. Jeff Lynne knows how to turn out a good song. Plenty here to enjoy.

@rockisthebest1000 Do you mean Wrappers or Rappers as in Gangster Rap?
bertyUK 5 months ago
@bertyUK That's the joke. Wrappers as in sweets and rappers as in music. You have to get rid of both them to get great food/music.

Every single person is entitled to their own taste in music 4 cripe sakes! It ain't cool to judge other peoples taste. Take it from someone who's been taking a history of rock and roll class and who happens to a hard core musical genius

If there's only one band as good as the Beatles, it has to be -- ELO!

@rin3guy Just wondering...what do u think about "Queen" (the original one)?
bcoopdakid24 2 years ago
Queen does rate quite highly on my list, at #4! Right behind ELO, the Beatles & ABBA (in that order). And rounding out my Top 10 musical acts:
5. Hall & Oates
6. Foreigner
7. Styx
8. Fleetwood Mac
9. Chicago
10. Bee Gees

I've got a playlist for that.

Me too & of all the bands I've ever seen live-ELO has a special place in my heart & always will.
jcross21 2 years ago 7
I'm so jealous. I'm 17, so I never got that chance. However, I was lucky enough to catch Rush, AC/DC, and Earth Wind and Fire before they all fell off the face of the planet.
stupidgenius107 2 years ago
I'm sorry, dude. It was gr8 growing up with this music. Love ELO and EWF! I bet u would also love Boston, Kansas, Journey, Foreigner. Oh, and for a little variety, try Paul Davis. He may be one u haven't heard b4.
MrUnc82alum 2 years ago
I really like Boston and Foreigner and I like some Kansas and Journey. I've never heard of Paul Davis though. Thanks for the suggestion.
stupidgenius107 2 years ago
Totally different style of music with him, but some really cool hits back then. I 4got to mention that if u like EWF, u should listen to Brothers Johnson doing Stomp and Strawberry Letter 23. Enjoy!
MrUnc82alum 2 years ago
It's not surprising to see songs like this and others from that era coming back into popularity. But the one thing I do miss is the Album art and liner notes - CDs and iTunes have done away with that, and if you're my age, you miss it. The album art was a way to continue the theme of the album or just give a mood. Now it's a thumbnail image.
bruhe 2 years ago 6
Bruhe, you are so right. The album sleeve was something extra. I miss that too. x.

I don't really like rap and pop and stuff like that much... I stick with this!!! :D
GTASanAndreasMovie 2 years ago
My previous comment was in response to TheOReport1994's claim that today's music is crap.
stupidgenius107 2 years ago
ELO is odd in that they are were a rock group, but also a simply pop group. The pop stations played ELO all the time back in the day, but rock stations didn't play them as much back then. "Turn To Stone," "Telephone Line," & "Strange Magic" were on the Rock channels, but songs like "Shine a Little Love," "Living Thing," "Sweet Talking Woman," &"Mr Blue Sky" stayed primarily on the pop channels. Hall and Oates did something similar in that they crossed the line between Rock, Pop & R&B/Soul.
