Oh and u say the dogtown boys had style (which is true they did) well if you want an opinion of a pro, a question regarding this topic was asked to tony alva himself by two brazillian interviewers and he said that style still exists in the surfing and skating world today
I have skated most my life and learned that tricks are for kids, its not what you do its how you do it. The way i see it the term "style" has faded out of the skate world for the most part. Living on the east coast and being part of a tight nit crew, much like dog town was back then we are about raw style and street skating. I always wanted to try surfing but most of the kids i knew that did it didn't even skate and 90% of the time i just wanted to punch them in the face. But Surfing being the
oh the Hawaiians were ahead of their time! the Whole T&C Crew stood up to Apartheid and the ' ISP' i think it was in those days-they were punished :( yet their influence is worldwide still today !SHAKA BRAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Aloha and Mahalo for all you have given us! may the world Adopt your Aloha before its too late
I remember when I first saw Larry Bertleman and his cut-backs all I did was go out, catch a wave and practiced and practiced trying to cut-back as Larry did.... I never mastered it though :)
i heard that, bro. ive surfed ONCE. but ive been skating for seven years, and larry bertlemann and older surfers are who i try to skate like. and its the same with skateboarding. its all about the tricks, all about doing a kickflip over whatever, and kids just loose the foundation of skateboarding. they didnt call it sidewalk surfing because they were high.
I can remember a swell that hit So. CA back in the early 70's My own hometown of Coronado, CA had the best surf it's ever seen. I heard that Larry and some of the other HI greats hit the surf there. I was out there when the swell hit on it first day and it scared us all. It started out as a swell w/ 8 ft waves & then built up to 20+ really fast. On a beach break that isn't so wonderful. I was so tired out from paddling to the outside that all I could do was to take a 20+ closeout wave in.
Larry Bertlman..."Anything is Possible". Greatest surfer ever. The good old days...Hau Bush, Shark Country, John's, Coves...Yup yup. Ewa Beach, Hawaii...
Larry I tried to call your number from Sydney a couple times but got your answering machine "hey its LB..." etc. It's cool. This vid reminds me of the time before surfing turned into a circus. Mark Richards just did an interview in Australia where he commented that even he could get no respect whatsoever, that people wouldn't even give "their own mother" a wave these days and he didn't know what kind of monster the era of professionalism had created. Peace and love
@stokakrishnadas OMG u noe larry omg i only noe his mom shes my hawaiian studies teacher at kalakaua intermidiate we made a surfboard out of cardboard for him when he recently hurt his hip......so yah im pretty good friends with his mom cause she found out that i surf so she gave me like a bertlemann ring or their family ring or something so yah ho your so lucky u know him
Check out Larry dropping into bombs with NO LEASH. So fun to watch. Surfing in the 70's was a very unique time, those who were there know what I mean.
I dunno about you but it's all about fun for me and if turns and tricks are fun.........then so be it. I have fun when i do a turn or a trick or get air. That's super fun and no one can tell me any different. I love this og surfer. The og way, the Chandler Way :p
what a great guy, you dont see many of todays surfers, professional or not, having as much fun as Larry was having back then....today, its not about fun, its about turns and tricks and hype and whatever.
I remember when I was 21 - in 1977, surfing out at Bondi Beach watching Cheyne Horan. He was doing a few hyperactive turns under the lip and straight into the barrel. I also remember Rabbit shredding out at Burleigh in about 1974. Fast forward to 2005 or so, I recall watching Cheyne Horan riding a McCoy nugget at 4 or 5 foot Burleigh with a cast of thousands. He was still the hottest surfer in the water at probably 45 or so. These guys are legends.
Wow! the man himself. i grew up in venice and this guy was my hero.i'm like 12 and skating down the block and who's standing on the corner..yep, a grumpy bertleman trying to figure out what he's doing there. gigantic fro' and all. my favorite surfer still and i got an old jeff ho twin for this kind of stuff.. not as easy when your 45. thanks for the video!!!
Not sure I would ever peg Rabbit or Berts as "soul surfers". Maybe by today's performance standards they seem soul, but back then they were two of the most aggro, radical shredders on the planet. The 70's versions of Fanning and Irons.
You have a point there. Surfers like Lopez and Mark Richards where incredibly graceful - current surfers like Slater and Fanning are too, but the commercial and competitive pressures mean that they have to rack up a certain number and style of manouvers which can be, I think, aesthetically less pleasing.
Awesome video. Bertleman was my hero. I even had an Afro and surfed at the Pier in Hermosa Beach. Then we would head to the Funnel in Gardena for skateboarding. Those were the OG days. Long live Larry Bertleman.
No one else was cutting it up like Bertleman back in the day. I had a schoolgirl crush on him and I had tons of his pix & posters in my room! It's still a thrill to watch him surf! Thanks for the great guitars, too!
I never said it was Hendrix. It's Eric Johnson, Steve Vai and Joe Satriani from the G3 tour. Eric Johnson is playing the silky lead at first and singing. I think it's a fabulous cover of what Jimi said was his favourite composition.
I know that you didn't say it was hendrix, someone else did. Also, I'm pretty certain this footage is from the film Super Session. It isn't from Free Ride.
OK I did a bit of research on the footage. As far as I can gather, it's a cut from "Standing Room Only" produced in 1978 by Alan Main and Hugh Thomas.
If you search google you can actually still buy VHS copies
I guessed with Super Session, because the poster for that film shows Bertlemann riding that very same maroon and red board. Also, I watched Free Ride two nights ago. It's definitely not from that one.
Maybe your right about the Free Ride. I dunno. A friend of mine gave me the clip and told me it was free ride. In any case, I strongly feel that contemporary surfing is sometimes too frantic and passionate. I suppose it's the competitive pressure and money. It's like man vs nature. My home break is one of the most beautiful beaches in Australia (Cabarita Beach) and some moron just painted "Locals only" in huge white letters on the headland.
brings back chills when i watch this ,,,,times in the mid seventies ,,,lazying at the beach,,skateboards in hand ,,waiting for the wind to change direction,,,,
One of the most unbelievable surf contests I saw was the Coke contest in about 1977 at Fairy Bower. Nat Young, Terry Fitz, Michael Peterson, Mark Richards charging really huge, vicious barrels.
In the late 70's I had a copy of Surfer or Surfing magazine with a cover picture of Larry Bertleman doing a wild, fins out backhand bottom turn at Ala Moana on his Aipa twin fin which was just the hottest surfing photo practically ever. My other favorite was a shot of Mark Richards doing a turn under a mountainous lip at 15 foot Backdoor pipe. Sorry, but the clip here was given to me by a friend - I've got some of my own Kirra footage I'll put on
Rips! The surfing is absolutely incredible. Timelessly hot. Style, power, the amazing cutback. Plus the Hendrix cover of RedHouse Blues. And Rabbit at the start. What more can you ask for. The best surf video on YouTube. Better than Laird. A great surfer is always a great surfer, regardless of the era.
