I love the way they make Coop out to be the ultimate heterosexual male at the beginning. Not only does it make for a great twist but it also defies stereotypes. And it makes sense that Coop never went on a second date.
Whenever I watch this episode, I always have this stupid sliver of hope that the end will change (even though it's obvious what's going to happen and I've watch it countless times before). Guh. It always breaks my heart though.
Cold Case was one of the best dramas I've ever seen. The writing, the acting, the directing were all always so moving and performed beautifully. This show could really move you in a way no other show can.
How come it always feels (like in "A Time To Hate" and in this) that the older generation (parents, like Coop's dad) seems to have this huge problem towards homosexuality, but the younger generation (children, like Coop here) is anxious to be a gay :( I think it's so incredibly sad that parents won't accept it, when their children want to be something special :,( And it seems to me that the younger generation always wants to live and make a better life than the older generation.
There were so many great things about this episode! Not just the storyline, characters and acting - I've always loved the way it was shot in black and white with just the occasional bursts of colour, usually red. And what an inspired choice of song in My Back Pages!
@djamal1992 yeah me too, I am just so touched by that. This one have such a powerful ending, this episode really shaken something up within me and im actually teary. but....did you forget "we're the lucky ones" yet? lol
I think the point was that Jimmy feels guilty that he wasn't with Coop and that he could've saved him had he been there, but in reality McCree would've just killed both of them.
After I'd place the fight in the locker room, the discussion between Jimmy and Coop about living another life together, the break up initiated by Jimmy and finally the teary ending.
Everything's alright until 5:13.Then I would place the baptism of the baby, then the talk between Coop and his father.Thirdly, the scene when Coop and Jimmy's wife are talking in the kitchen (cause if you really look at it you'll see it's an after party for the baptism and plus Coop and J's wife are wearing the exact same clothes as during the baptism).
How can someone be so dumb that he feels he has to kill a homosexual person ?
I mean in which way does it affect one's life that two guys are in love together ?! What do these people care ?
There's definitely something wrong with homophobic people. When they think homosexuals are abnormal, they don't know that they are actually those who are not right in the head.
Omg, another great episode, this was soo sad. I always said I dont wanna be in love, but what if I end up lonely? I hope my life doesnt become a tragic ending
this episode really hits home, i too lost my significant other to hate because we are different, i love how he said "we are the lucky ones" because i believe its true my parents have been married a very long time and they are complete strangers to each other but on the other hand my girlfriend and i were in love but some homophobe idiot too that away from me.... i love this episode very great job!!!
@RockabillyDoll. Hi. I'm sorry that you lost your true love. I agree with you - this episode was so powerfully touching and it really did hammer home the message that 'WE ARE THE LUCKY ONES". And I feel we truly are. It made me cry at the hatred that the two characters faced, which finally led to a tragic and upsetting conclusion.
thank you and it is the worst feelin to lose the one you truly love but im a huge believer in karma and that idiot will get his someday..but all i can do know is forgive and pray that this never happens to anyone else.
Hi, RockabillyDoll - Oh, I agree in Karma. And we have a saying in the UK and that is 'What goes around comes around' - and they will get it. I'm just sorry that so much unnecessary hurt gets caused by ignorant, out-of-touch-with-this century people.
Hi, RockabillyDoll. I agree with you there. Its just a shame because we're not exactly lousy people on the whole. Least we show more care and compassion which is something many of 'them' are obviously devoid of. :(
@IntellectualAmy that saying 'What goes around comes around' is world wide. I grew up with that saying(from Chicago). We also say "what you do comes back to you ten-fold". At the end of the episode the lieutenant was caught for what he did to Coop.
Off topic, the guy that played the Lieutenant also plays Kyle on V. When I watch V I keep thinking damn he looks familiar. Thats because I saw him on Cold Case. He's from the UK.
I agree this is such a sad and tragic story. Seemed to reach into my soul and burn the images in my psyche. Great writing, direcetion, esp the lighting and black & white with only the red color coming out of the darkness. Sad to believe that something so horribly tragic, and wrong could happen and happen within the police dept of a major city in america in 1968 (I was 6yrs old) is almost incomprehensible. Let's hope that time is far behind us and getting even further every day. Thanks
The Cold Case series basically is about a group of detectives that investigate unsolved cases, or otherwise known as a "Cold Case", as the trail to find the person responsible for the crime goes "cold".
I do agree with you, though. This was a warm-hearted episode that even moved a tough guy like myself to an emotional response.
Gosh, this makes me cry so hard. Coop was such a great guy. I love that he wasn't afraid to be himself, and gosh, Jimmy, why'd you let him gooo? Ugh, so freakin sad. They are so beautiful together. I wish a story like this would have a happy ending. *cries some more*
I love Coop, and the way he stood up for himself and what he believed in.
I getting very weepy at the end of that video. So sad for Jimmy and the regret he must of felt for not telling Coop he loved him when he had the chance.
I just realized that coop and jimmy were filmed in black and white to symbolize how the world saw things in black and white. At the end when they are in color, it represents how the world had changed and how jimmy finally accepted who he was.
This is one of my favorite cold case episodes. It always breaks my heart when coop desperately tries to remind Jimmy that they're the lucky ones right before coop drives off to his death.
My dad might have been a real asshole sometimes. And even though he didn't like it when i came out(more like pushed out of the closet)i was still his son. And family look after their own.
Homophobia is disgusting, it's what's keeping people who just want to be happy absolutely miserable. And clouding everyone's mind with things that shouldn't matter.
He said keep an eye on those bathhouses, Jimmy. This is in reference to a derogatory comment he made earlier in the men's locker room about "fags." Coop got offended and shoved the guy against the wall. Jimmy pulled him off and then the cop got the idea something was going on between the two of them.
This is totally irrelevent to the main point of the story but I just have to ask this. If McCree shot Coop, how the hell did he get to the bridge first?
In my opinion, it was all planned between McCree and Coop's dad. However, I think McCree was doing drugs on the side and viewed Coop as a threat to his street operation. His dad, on the other hand, was ashamed on his son and so was in on it as well. McCree took care of two problems, so to speak, as McCree sent Coop out to begin with.
Furthermore, it's possible that McCree thought Coop would be with Jimmy, but Jimmy decided to take out a rookie, so Coop was alone at the time. Flip a coin.
Had Jimmy and Coop both been together, which looks like something McCree had planned or wanted to go down, both of them would have been killed. It's ironic that Jimmy decided this particular night to take out a new rookie.
Regardless, this was a well done, but incredibly moving and deeply emotional ending to a very tragic story.
I agree with you 100% on both comments....... It was an obvious set up, there was no robbery going on...... That was McCree that fired those 2 rounds at coop right???
@BEASTIN021 Yes, McCree fired both rounds from the shotgun. He had been waiting by the bridge. My guess is that he expected both Coop and Jimmy to be together. He then could have taken out both of them. But, as we know, Coop was alone and became the target of McCree's rage.
I don't think there was anything "cute" about this episode; fear and ignorance which turns into hate, has made us monsters. If anything this episode is hopeful, in that justice sometimes prevails, and those who choose to love honestly, will always be "the lucky ones."
"What do you think, Jimmy? Brawl or babe?"
"Brawl. Then a babe."
"Isn't it about time he got married?"
"You gotta go on a second date for that, Sarge."
I love the way they make Coop out to be the ultimate heterosexual male at the beginning. Not only does it make for a great twist but it also defies stereotypes. And it makes sense that Coop never went on a second date.
