The two alternate names were created to trick the Vikings into thinking that Greenland was a very lush place that was good for farming and living. The real villagers hid out on Iceland, which is very lush and green.

With the dark caracter, the continual fear of villager and the sad situation of them, the song appear like a very thin sliver of light going right on our emotional center.
