"I don't know what you're carrying but it better be good, cause I think I just declared war on Cheyenne." Well legally, Cheyenne declared war on IROT first, thrice, first by attacking the Texas Embassy itself, trying to stop their consular jet from leaving Cheyenne, and by trying to shoot it down, the plane is as sovereign as the Embassy, Cheyenne attacked both, and that is a direct act of war in international rules, so technically they were already at war when this dog fight happens.
As for plausibility, aircraft radars like the F-15C's APG-63 sweep in an approximately 120-degree cone directly in front of the aircraft. If those AS F-15s (still unsure where they're from) didn't have AWACS support, the Texas Vipers could have easily gotten the jump on them. In this case, the aircraft doesn't matter, it's the tactics.
It's the pilot not the plane that determines the outcome of a dogfight. Those were QAAM missiles fired by the F-16s, onlys such a missile could have turned around to bag the 2nd F15 that dodged it. F-16s carry long range missiles too, that and Texas must have had its own ground radar to coordinate, then of course, the F-16s were flying higher than the F-15s, and both planes have only forward radar beams, and the see down, not up, the F-16s had the higher alt advantage and the long range QAAMs
@WystenDraco besides that F-16s may be attackers, but they can fight pretty damn good, especially the Block 60 F-16s. TANG uses F-16s and they are excellent interceptors, and can be equipped with jammers or may have been supported by jammers on the ground near the Texas border, so yes this fight is and would be possible, because dog fights are not usually limited to air-air, they have ground support, besides if Texas is as vital to either side as said, then it can afford good air battle gear.
@WystenDraco In a situation such as this it's the technology that is the deciding factor. The F-15 was purpose built for the sake of air superiority. The F-16 is a dogfighter that was adapted into a multirole platform over time. If you want to debate the skill of the pilots, consider this: F-15C pilots never learn to drop bombs.
Do me a favor and define the term "QAAM" to me. And if you use any bollocks from "Ace Combat" this discussion is over.
@productNine well better equipment still does not mean squat as much as experience and skill of the pilot. The F-15C may have superior air combat gear, but a superior experienced pilot knows ways to overcome superior tech. Data link could have been a factor, and the same gear providing data link to the F-16 could just as easily have allowed them to catch the F-15s off guard, like an an military satellite or an recon plane, Fort Bliss has those here, they fly over my house every day.
@WystenDraco as for the F-15s being hit by a missile seemingly from somewhere other than the incoming F-16 pair, could have been another pair of fighters from a different direction, but tv show budgets may have made that impossible to show? Those F-15s may have been outnumbered, or the pilot locking Jake's jet was trying to scare him into cooperation, knowing to shoot him down could accidentally set off the nuke he was carrying, and Cheyenne wouldn't have wanted that in any scenario
Why does this jingoistic, us vs them, propaganda always contain so much bullshit. Its about the same level as Pro-wrestling. There are so many plot holes (F16 aint stealth). Along with a grand cast of one dimensional cartoon like characters. The main characters big slioquy was "this is a consular aircraft". If you did'nt get it ther first time he paraphases it a few times. Then the big finale is an impossible sucker punch; boom boom show Cancelled.....
@jimmywrangles It's a diplomatic jet, so yeah it is possible it could have something like that along with possibly countermeasures, like flares for example. The show had to rush to make a final ep as it was cancelled, so budget cuts likely meant the dog fight was too expensive to make realistic.
@TheLastCobalt lol, true, we Texans on the whole are very resourceful too, escpecially when it counds. The TANG may have very well figured out a way to modify their planes to make such a fight possible. I would not be surprised if that is the case. In any case, superior tech or not, a plane is still only as good as the pilot flying it.
@WystenDraco Well, the F-15s wouldve been focused on the Leer Jet, they let down situational awareness... tossed in with hollywood... I wouldnt put it past the TANG to make short work of those F-15s.
@TheLastCobalt In air force terms, it's called Target Fixation. F-16s are not entirely defenseless vs F-15s either. I saw how close the lead was to the leerjet when locking on, I would not fire a missile anywhere near that close to an air target, I would likely shoot myself down too, flying debris would hit me. Jake was carrying a nuke aboard, armed or not, that's an iffy shot too. Plus AS attacked Texas Embassy, then attacking its consular jet, Texas had every right to down them.
@WystenDraco Im sure the F-16s also would have a tighter turning radius as well, Besides, the F-15 have power on them, but not enough to dodge two AMRAAMs, lol. Your right too, Hollywood always does the close in missile shot, They forget, thats what guns are for.
@TheLastCobalt yup, the only time hollywood ever had anything remotely true on guns was Top Gun "I'm too close for missiles, I'm switching to guns." Russian small lightweight Mig 21s in Vietnam were a royal pain for the purpose built F-4s, leading to the eventual F-16, which can easily be to an F-15 like a Mig-21 to the F-4. The TANG likely had some kind of ground or AWAC support helping delay detection until they were right in front of Jake firing on the edge of his visual range.
I dunno about this scene. The F-15 has a longer range radar than the F-16, and thus can target farther out with AIM-120s (though I only saw old model AIM-9 Sidewinders on the F-15). They would have seen the F-16s coming way before the Falcons could shoot at them.
Then again, that F-15 pilot was pretty gangsta. Like, hold your M61 sideways gangsta.
@productNine maybe they didn't think Texas would dare attack them still over AS soil, but legally ASAF started it by locking a Texas Embassy plane, Consular Flight means as sovereign as the Embassy that uses it. If you didn't notice, the F-16s were flying somewhat higher than the F-15s, by seeing where the missiles were fired from, above the forward nose mounted F-15 range. As you last sentance suggested and I paraphrase my comment, better pilots win dogfights more often than better planes.
@WystenDraco I dunno man, that explanation sounds kind of made up.
Radars can look up *and* down, you know. Also, the F-16 has no other means to direct weapons at BVR than its radar (excluding datalink), and using a radar is like shining a search light. The F-15 has equipment by which to see such radiation.
You're also incorrectly assuming that all missiles take a straight path from launcher to target.
In regards to your other comment, the US doesn't field the Blk 60. Only the UAE does.
@productNine The F-15 was designed primarily as a Air to Ground strike fighter. Its very heavy due to armor, it can reach mach 2.5, but maneuverability in a Dogfight is rather lacking. One draw back to the F-15 is that it can fly faster than its design G loading, which is why a warning system was added to remind pilots to reduce their speed. The F-16 was designed as a light-weight fighter with a very high power weight ratio for good performance. The F-16 is a multi purpose fighter.
@productNine Look up my info if you want, had to do research on the subject for a speech in college. If im wrong, then no sweat off my back. Unless you discount info posted on the web, then you can not call me incorrect.
@porpus99 The F-15 was designed as an air superiority fighter from the start. There is a strike variant, the E model, but it came along much later. Actually, the E model (at its inception) was even better at air combat than the previous models due to stronger internal frame (for weapons carriage, allowed longer sustained high g turns) and datalink capability, which at the time the C model didn't.
Wish I had more room to explain how wrong you are. At least learn the diff between g and airspeed.
@productNine Ok, fine im wrong then. As i said from my last message, if i am wrong i will admit it. No problem. If you had posted reasons why i was wrong originally, then it would be over and done with. You dont need to try and rub in that i am wrong. While i may have been wrong with the F-15, from what i know about the F-16 i believe my info was correct and will stand by that.
@porpus99 My apologies, it wasn't my intent to be rude. What you say about the F-16 is mostly correct. The YF-16 was designed as a light-weight dogfighter (along with the competing YF-17), but the thrust-to-weight ratio is very similar to that of the F-15 (just over 1:1 depending on loadout). The F-16 was adapted into a multirole fighter, but it has its roots in dogfighting, designed with lessons learned from the Vietnam war. Interesting point: the F-16 has a g limiter. AFAIK the F-15 does not.
Ive always had a passing interest in this show, i got to watch about half of the first episode before i had to go out ( or something, i cant really remember)
What actualy happened? i remember there were nuke attacks or something but was it Russians, Chinese or what? Civil war?
Might have to see if i can find an old torrent or something.
@Antifaith29 go torrent or buy or something. this is my favorite show ever. first 7 episodes are just "good" but 8-22 are seriously the best tv i have ever seen, just have to let it set it self up. this clip here is from the series finale nothing too major is spoiled though. what actually happened was creative and awesome, it's in episode 18.
You really cannot call that a dogfight, You know, there was a paper back novel where three states seceeded from the USA and the hero of the book became it's president, can't remember what it was.
I don't much care for the banter here, but the APG-70 on an F15 has a scan reach of at least 200km. They would have seen both the F16s and their missiles well beforehand.
So sure, maybe an F16 can outmaneuver the F15 in a dogfight, but that's not what happened here and generally isn't how air combat is played out these days.
@slowdown3030 Its only a Tv program. But in reality F16s are well able! The F16 is the US militarys most manoverable fighter after the F22. In a close in dogfight the F15s would be fucked!
@265justy i getcha, but wouldnt the Eagles have seen them coming anyways.better radar and all.whatever yes its just a tv show and ill chalk it up to the Eagle pilots being noobs as well lol.
@slowdown3030 Yeah Eagles have better BVR, but the F16s are being updated also. They both carry the same weapons & air to air missiles,so who knows! The F15 cant turn in a fight like the F16 tough!
@nitroxide2011 The F15 can turn in a fight pretty good, but not as good as an F16. The F15 like the F14 is big & heavy ,its turn rate & turn radius is nowhere near as good as the F16 or F/A18 even. Ask the experts. The pilots preffer the the F15 for its power,2 engines & BVR. But the F16 for its manoverbilty & its dogfighting abiltys. The eastern block Mig29 pilots feared the F16 more than the F15 during the Coldwar. In RED FLAG exercises the F16 nearly always beats the F15 in dogfighting.
@nitroxide2011 Your right. The pilot does play a big part. You could have a top pilot in an old F-5 Tiger & he would probably still beat both the F15 & F16 in a knife range dogfight.
@nitroxide2011 Not to sure cause if the USAF decide to go ahead & buy the over priced F35 ,they might stop all funding to F16 upgrades. But PESA radars were in the pipeline.
@265justy oh... Yeah well money is short nowadays... And then there's the politicians...
Even with the economy looking grim, the gov't says that they are going to buy a hell load of Lightning II's to replace every fighter and attack aircraft in their arsenal besides the Raptor... ....wow....
@nitroxide2011 All these new 5 gen fighters are gone way overbudget. Same thing happened in Europe with the TYPHOON & now most euro countrys are cutting orders for the F35 also. Upgraded or newbuild F/A18s & F16s is the only other solution. Then you have China ,India & Pakistan manufacturing there own fighters like there is no tomorrow. China is a big treat with the J- 10,J -11 ,J-15 (SU27 & 33) & JF-17.plus they are test flying their own Stealth . The West really need to steep up a gear.
@265justy Yeah, it seems like we're falling behind in production by far, and the US and other countries are starting to do the same thing... US upgrading F-15Cs to the "F-15C Golden Eagle" (with AESA radar), Navy upgrading Super Hornets to have conformal fuel tanks and an internal stores bay, the UAE or Saudi Arabia (I'm not sure which one) and the UK have a buyback deal where the Brits will buy the old fighter/interceptor variants of the Tornado, and then the Arab country will buy Eurofighters.
...and I think the Luftwaffe and RAF are upgrading their Eurofighters, too, but looks like it's really gonna be hard to beat, or even KEEP UP with India, China, Russia, and Pakistan
@nitroxide2011 Yeah India are gone crazy ,they seem to be buying aircraft left ,right & centre from both east & west. Russia are starting to pick up the pace also. Then you have the USAF grounding their entire F15C fleet not so long ago cause of fractures in their wings plus the one that broke up in mid air of the Florida coast, They are a fine plane still, but most are 30+ years old with high flying hours on their airframes. Id say the F15s sould go before the 16s.
@nitroxide2011 Well it might sound funny. But as a kid ,I loved watching the dogfights in the Iron Eagle movie. And after seeing one display in an airshow not long afterwards i fell in love with it. I spose i toke more intreast in it then & back 20 years ago the F16 seemed to be the most feared fighter in the skys cause of its high manoverablity, good trust to weight ratio, its multi role abiltys ,its kill record in service with the Isrealis,USAF,Pakistan & the Dutch AF.
@nitroxide2011 I recon its about the only fighter the US have that can give the Mig-29,SU -27 , Mirage 2000,Rafale & Typhoon a good knife range dogfight bar the F22. The FA18 maybe also, but the F16 beat off the F17 ( FA18 prototype) in a fly off . I spose it also paved the way for todays fighters with its flybywire tec. Saying al that tough the F15 is fantastic & also has a great combat history Probably the best in history.
@kertaspaper94 In the show, the new government came along in season 2, and the states got divided at Texas. One side is still the United States, the other side that Jericho is on is now known as the Allied States of America. In season 3 the civil war was going to take place.
@kertaspaper94 Nuclear bombs go of in the USA and a small town survives, although that really does the complexity and the amazingness of the show injustice. Go watch it now.
i cant fucking believe this what the fuck America divided F-16s shooting down F-15s what the fuck is this TEXAS national Air guard. Whatever i would be Happy to see the USAF F-22 or F-35 kick ass of these redneck TEXAS Air puny or whatever. USA Cant b divided.

Even with the economy looking grim, the gov't says that they are going to buy a hell load of Lightning II's to replace every fighter and attack aircraft in their arsenal besides the Raptor... ....wow....
nitroxide2011 7 months ago

US upgrading F-15Cs to the "F-15C Golden Eagle" (with AESA radar), Navy upgrading Super Hornets to have conformal fuel tanks and an internal stores bay, the UAE or Saudi Arabia (I'm not sure which one) and the UK have a buyback deal where the Brits will buy the old fighter/interceptor variants of the Tornado, and then the Arab country will buy Eurofighters.
nitroxide2011 7 months ago
@265justy ... I ran outta space
...and I think the Luftwaffe and RAF are upgrading their Eurofighters, too, but looks like it's really gonna be hard to beat, or even KEEP UP with India, China, Russia, and Pakistan
nitroxide2011 7 months ago
@nitroxide2011 Yeah India are gone crazy ,they seem to be buying aircraft left ,right & centre from both east & west. Russia are starting to pick up the pace also. Then you have the USAF grounding their entire F15C fleet not so long ago cause of fractures in their wings plus the one that broke up in mid air of the Florida coast, They are a fine plane still, but most are 30+ years old with high flying hours on their airframes. Id say the F15s sould go before the 16s.
265justy 7 months ago
@265justy hmm.... well I agree to prolong the F-15 to 2025, and the F-15C's are fully operational (again), as well as the ones with AESA's.
Alright buddy just tell it to me straight- why do you like the F-16?
Now before you get defensive, -I'm just askin'...-
btw do you like the B60's?

America is no longer a United States ? how did this happen ? what is it called now ?
kertaspaper94 1 year ago
@kertaspaper94 In the show, the new government came along in season 2, and the states got divided at Texas. One side is still the United States, the other side that Jericho is on is now known as the Allied States of America. In season 3 the civil war was going to take place.
