Clearly, there were many theatrical exaggerations, but it's a movie, has to fit a certain time format, be entertaining (thus profitable). Iran *does* care about it's Persian heritage. In fact the name Iran is relatively new and less than a century ago (1935) it was still called Persia (post Ottomon Empire). The language they speak is Parsi (bastardized as Farsi by Arabs who have no letter p) with a distinct vocabulary.
I don't think that producers of the movie 300 tried to make the persians look like a horde of "evil" barbariens just because there is some political tension between Iran and the USA. I have never seen a Vietnam movie which glorified the conflict. In fact EVERY vietnam movie I have seen has been critical of the war. Apocalypse Now, Platoon, Full Metal Jacket, Hamburger Hill, Tigerland, etc. These films are meant to show the soldiers as individual heros because of their loyalty towards each other, not to their country. Many interesting points in all these films are when the soldiers are aware and critical that what they are fighting for is unjust and a lost cause.

No mention of Hymstacleas (travesty in its self) and the naval battle during Thermopylae. its pretty evident that the book (which the movie is based on 100%) was never quoted as being a graphic novel and being out for years. the fact that the book should be getting flac. its just a fad for graphic novels to be going like this. dont bash the movie or the book. it was just made to be just made. I was thinking the same thing! Watch One night with the king- for a better portrayal of Xerses. BTW- He was pretty brutal, as was everyone else at that time. However, the Africans are portrayed as servants of the king and not necessarily Persian descent (slaves were common in those days).Also those guys are way too hairless to play Spartans. And they do throw in Mythical creatures, so it is meant to be taken as fake.

Well, it's common knowledge the that the film 300 is based on the graphic novel by Frank Miller, and apart from a few scenes with Leonidas' wife, is a shot-by-shot, word-for-word copy of that book. The directors wanted to make as faithful an adaptation as possible, so all of Miller's bigoted inclinations are in the film.

The movie "300" is just that--a movie. It's a movie based quite accurately on a graphic novel done a long time ago, which inflates everything into epic proportions and bases very little on fact. It's a testosterone-laden movie full of action, but mostly done for it's cinematography and brilliant imagery.

Clearly, there were many theatrical exaggerations, but it's a movie, has to fit a certain time format, be entertaining (thus profitable). Iran *does* care about it's Persian heritage. In fact the name Iran is relatively new and less than a century ago (1935) it was still called Persia (post Ottomon Empire). The language they speak is Parsi (bastardized as Farsi by Arabs who have no letter p) with a distinct vocabulary.

I'm half persian and yes I think if you are going to make a movie, you should at least attempt to capture the basic essence of the culture correctly --if the movie was fictional it wouldn't matter but since it is based on real historical events I think they should have done a better job with that because it looks careless and can insult people in addition to being misleading to those uneducated about persian history.

I have never seen a Vietnam movie which glorified the conflict. In fact EVERY vietnam movie I have seen has been critical of the war. Apocalypse Now, Platoon, Full Metal Jacket, Hamburger Hill, Tigerland, etc. These films are meant to show the soldiers as individual heros because of their loyalty towards each other, not to their country. Many interesting points in all these films are when the soldiers are aware and critical that what they are fighting for is unjust and a lost cause.

This movie is entertainment. History was remodeled to make for a more entertaining story. It was designed for peoples enjoyment rather then to change their opinion's about anything.

I personally didn't find it racist at all. I can see why people would be offended by it, but that's their issue to deal with not the creators of the film. The truth of this whole matter is people are being over sensitive and downright paranoid about what is a simple shot-for-shot adaptation of a loosely based historical action/adventure comic book. No it can't. There would need to be intent behind the story to make it propaganda. Please prove that the intent is beyond a normal blockbuster hollywood comic adaptation. Explain why Frank Miller (originally) and Zack Snyder decided to make propaganda and for what purpose (BTW a comic made years ago couldn't have been made as propaganda for a current war on Iran Franks not Nostradamus). yes it is a movie but 90 percent accurate as far as historical facts, persians tried to invade Europe and they lost 500,000 men in the process. The battles at Marathon, Thermopylae, Salamis and Platea were all decisive and showed them Barbarians that Europe would not capitulate. No mention of Hymstacleas (travesty in its self) and the naval battle during Thermopylae. They left a lot out about the build up to Thermopylae and most aspects of the story were half truths- Leonidas and the wolf fighting for his right of passage was actually based on the Spartan tradition of murdering a slave. No mention of the homosexual relations in the Spartan army either.

WELL. I don't have a bigoted view of homosexuality like yourself so don't see it as an insult and if you take time to research it the Spartan army encouraged homosexuality as they believed it brought them closer together as a fighting unit (2 mins on Google should show this). I have the highest respect for ancient Greece, they did create democracy.

lol, I remember how pissed off my latin teacher was when Gladiator came out. He probably had to be led from the room the day after this came out. The Wachowski brothers don't care about historical accuracy, they care about the box office. And that's a damn shame because real life can be interesting too. But what can you do except make a youtube video on it? As to the Iranians, the Persian empire during the Hellenistic wars was incomparable to what Iran is today. In my opinion, it's a nonissue.

its pretty evident that the book (which the movie is based on 100%) was never quoted as being a graphic novel and being out for years. the fact that the book should be getting flac. its just a fad for graphic novels to be going like this. dont bash the movie or the book. it was just made to be just made. Hollywood had nothing to do with an image or how to portray anything. i suggest picking up the book and reading it.

I was thinking the same thing! Watch One night with the king- for a better portrayal of Xerses. BTW- He was pretty brutal, as was everyone else at that time. However, the Africans are portrayed as servants of the king and not necessarily Persian descent (slaves were common in those days).Also those guys are way too hairless to play Spartans. And they do throw in Mythical creatures, so it is meant to be taken as fake.

Well, it's common knowledge the that the film 300 is based on the graphic novel by Frank Miller, and apart from a few scenes with Leonidas' wife, is a shot-by-shot, word-for-word copy of that book. The directors wanted to make as faithful an adaptation as possible, so all of Miller's bigoted inclinations are in the film.

Brokenicon. The writer of the comic book which the film is based on, was hands down a complete anti-muslim. He has been caught saying something like that Christian culture is vastly superior to those of Muslims and USA is dealing with barbarians and what not crap. So the film is indeed racist and I don´t think it is a coincidence that the book has only recently been put on film. Persia was an empire in those days. There were Africans living in the Persian Empire. Of course, these Africans were under the employ of the Persian Emperor. If Xerxes had been successful in his design to conquer Europe, then there would have been lilly white Europeans in the Persian empire too. The movie "300" is just that--a movie. It's a movie based quite accurately on a graphic novel done a long time ago, which inflates everything into epic proportions and bases very little on fact. It's a testosterone-laden movie full of action, but mostly done for it's cinematography and brilliant imagery.
