I had this from 6th grade until I was 17. Full blown panic attacks, loss of sleep, checking food, psychiatrists. One day I got really drunk and realized it wasn't that bad. I'm cured now. Sure i don't like it or enjoy it but I'm no longer afraid..
For the others saying that "nobody likes to throw up" - yes it's true,it's awful however remember this is a phobia, so those suffering from emetophobia (I do) have an irritational fear of this! While you might not like throwing up, we HATE it it's almost like death to us! Please understand this. Thanks

@13Bee1 Just to put this into perspective for you -- I had to take a leave of absence from college because of the mental anguish that this phobia caused me. I was almost SUICIDAL because I didn't want to deal with vomit. Can you say that your fear has taken you to that level? It's not something you can just "get over". We're all chemical beings, and sometimes we're not in control of those chemicals and the way our brains are wired. Please have some compassion.

I shouldn't have to say this, but my mother has depression and a friend of mine has had OCD, so I completely understand those things, and I don't like how you assume I don't, when you have no idea what I have been through, what I have learnt and what I have seen others gone through. @13Bee1 I'm not exaggerating in the least. It's a real and extremely intense fear. That's why I look up videos such as this one to try to help myself. Every single day. It's an every day worry. Always in the back of my mind. Ask any true emetophobe, and they'll tell you the same. And to get even more personal, I'm even thinking about not having children because I'm so scared of morning sickness and of my child getting sick. This really and truly sucks. I don't wish it on my worst enemy.

@dan2hamilton No. Most people don't like it and try to avoid it if possible, but are not actually afraid of it. Emetophobia can be so intense that you'd rather cut off your own arm than throw up. Hopefully that gives you a better idea of the level of fear some people deal with with this phobia.

Yeah I hate throwing up just because it hurts not because I'm a dumb a** and don't want to embarras myself. If I throw up then I throw up and people will just have to get over it. And I also get scared when someone else throws up because to me when they're throwing up that means something is terribly wrong with their body and their body is trying desperately to get it out and that they need immediate help. But vomit itself doesn't scare me it's just gross.

Mmkay. Let's think about this for a second. How would you feel about going up to a camp in the mountain's miles and miles away from any hospital and sleep in an 8 person dorm with bunk beds that have hundreds of Brown Recloose Spiders living under them. I'm a large arachniphobic and the Brown Recloose is ONE of the deadliest spiders that can be found in California to date. I slept every night for a week wondering if I'd wake up dead.
Maybe it's just luck, but I feel pretty damn lucky! I've had several stomach flus and I had food poisoning 3 times over those 10 years, but I never threw up (i always held it in, augh).

It's a horrible fear because its a natural thing that occurs so I'm kept up many nights knowing that at some point its going to happen. I'm 18 and I've had it since I was probably around 12.
I have this phobia. I'd lay in my bed, feeling nauseous, then make myself more nauseous and faint just from thinking about throwing up. I didn't sleep all night and sat in the computer chair all night trying to breathe deeply and calm down. It is one of my biggest fears and just typing it makes my heart race. : /

I used to suffer from this phobia (me vomiting, not other people). yeah, that sucked. I really think the best way around this one is exposure (i.e., vomiting). you come to realize it's not so bad. at least that's what did it for me.
I used to suffer from emetophobia horribly. Luckily, one night, I was ill and did throw up, even though I was panicking so much. I felt so good after, and my phobia is still there, but it is NO where near as bad.
I used to fear vomiting because of the squeezing and chocking feeling you get when you vomit. And then one time I got drunk and started vomiting and the fear became less intense ever since.
I still rather would be sick all day than throw up and feel better after 5 minutes..
i dont have this phobia because im 13 but then again, i wouldnt want someone to just chunk up their breakfast lunch and dinner on me making me look like a buffet bar!
@thedemonicheretic it is considered a phobia because it ruins our DAILY lives. people who aren't afraid of it just vomit and don't think twice about it. to us with emetophobia, we will not eat for days after vomiting. there is a difference between just not liking it and being absolutely horrified

I used to have this really bad when I was in middle school and high school... being in heavily populated places scared the crap out of me, I always had to know where the closest bathroom was... I am still afraid of throwing up, haven't thrown up in 14 years and I really hope I don't EVER have to throw up again...

I am afraid of throwing up and I could cry if I even see someone throw up and I would stay away from that person for weeks. I just wish throwing up wast a big deal. I would rather die than throw up

I don't think it's very strange. Vomiting IS quite embarrassing and it isn't a pleasant feeling. If I'm sick and feel really nauseous I feel very scared to vomit and start to hyperventilate if I think I'll throw up.

Mmkay. Let's think about this for a second. How would you feel about going up to a camp in the mountain's miles and miles away from any hospital and sleep in an 8 person dorm with bunk beds that have hundreds of Brown Recloose Spiders living under them. I'm a large arachniphobic and the Brown Recloose is ONE of the deadliest spiders that can be found in California to date. I slept every night for a week wondering if I'd wake up dead.

Maybe it's just luck, but I feel pretty damn lucky! I've had several stomach flus and I had food poisoning 3 times over those 10 years, but I never threw up (i always held it in, augh).

.... I actually have this phobia as well... It's more just me being sick that triggers it. But obsessive cleaning, fear of infection and raw foods come into play as well because of it. It's a horrible fear because its a natural thing that occurs so I'm kept up many nights knowing that at some point its going to happen. I'm 18 and I've had it since I was probably around 12.

I have this phobia. I'd lay in my bed, feeling nauseous, then make myself more nauseous and faint just from thinking about throwing up. I didn't sleep all night and sat in the computer chair all night trying to breathe deeply and calm down. It is one of my biggest fears and just typing it makes my heart race. : /

I get disgusted when ppl vomit and it also makes me wanna vomit, but honestly how often do people near her actually vomit. The last time I saw someone vomit was I unno 10 years ago. Even if you are in that situation, don't look at it. Turn away. Damn this is a stupid phobia.

I used to suffer from this phobia (me vomiting, not other people). yeah, that sucked. I really think the best way around this one is exposure (i.e., vomiting). you come to realize it's not so bad. at least that's what did it for me.

I used to suffer from emetophobia horribly. Luckily, one night, I was ill and did throw up, even though I was panicking so much. I felt so good after, and my phobia is still there, but it is NO where near as bad.

I used to fear vomiting because of the squeezing and chocking feeling you get when you vomit. And then one time I got drunk and started vomiting and the fear became less intense ever since.
I still rather would be sick all day than throw up and feel better after 5 minutes..

@thedemonicheretic it is considered a phobia because it ruins our DAILY lives. people who aren't afraid of it just vomit and don't think twice about it. to us with emetophobia, we will not eat for days after vomiting. there is a difference between just not liking it and being absolutely horrified

I also have emetophobia but it's gotten better over the years with medicine and therapy. Most people think we just get a little nervous, but really it's like an intense panic attack each time we feel nauseous or feel like or see someone vomit.

@ridingdirtyOG Actually, I find purging relaxing. It's amazing. And it releases endorphins in your brain, so purging does calm you down. A lot of bulimics I know say the same.
