After moving to the US at the age of 10 and growing up there, I always had a lot of respect for other countries and cultures. It was taught to me in the american public schools (waaaay more than it was in Russia where I was born). Now, I've been working overseas for 2 years (Korea and France). I am astounded at how little respect people seem to have for other cultures and how easily they bash america right to my face. I am very disappointed by the lack of education and respect.
People like that exist everywhere, it can't be helped. I am American and I was taught to respect all people, countries, and cultures. I was also taught that everyone is equal regardless of race, nationality, gender, sexual orientation, religion, etc.

I'm an American, & I rarely watch news. It's too depressing. I read comic book news and I'm 25, sad, I know. But just today as I was hoping to hear Obama might be ahead, and I stopped only to hear a story about child abuse, a crazy guy with a chainsaw in a homeless shelter and Ann Coulter talking up the Confederacy. I'm not kidding. So I can easily see how others can see us as nutjobs. But I'm optimistic, when I see a lot of good conversations on sites like this between all kinds of people.

I find these forums excellent places to explore own thoughts and of course challenge them...it's as though the 'truth' is continuously and perpetually unravelling. But of course, only my truth! Your essay sounds really interesting. Can I suggest you hang onto it so that in years to come you can revisit and compare how your ideas have (maybe) changed? I wish I'd done same!

i hate to admit it, but alot of the news we see here and what you see there is actually fairly accurate. we are a very violent people it seems. i dont blame the rest of the world for hating us. i sometimes find myself despising my citizenship also. i also am confused as to why you would eve be getting our news? seriously we are not that exciting.

Really? People need evidence to k ow that the majority of americans are not crazy? Or that the majority of arabs don't blow themselves up? I'd think it would take a bit of education and common since. People can read some american books or get some non mainstrean american culture; really easy with the internet. Before forming an opinion on any subject anyone worthy of a speck of respect will research the subject. Don't blame the media.

Now as an American you would know to take your media with a pinch of salt, but don't expect anyone that has never set foot in your country to be as intimately familiar with your media outlets, and their reputations, as you are.
The only reason I know to be wary of Fox or any others is because I stumbled upon people discussing their bias on the internet.

After moving to the US at the age of 10 and growing up there, I always had a lot of respect for other countries and cultures. It was taught to me in the american public schools (waaaay more than it was in Russia where I was born). Now, I've been working overseas for 2 years (Korea and France). I am astounded at how little respect people seem to have for other cultures and how easily they bash america right to my face. I am very disappointed by the lack of education and respect.

People like that exist everywhere, it can't be helped. I am American and I was taught to respect all people, countries, and cultures. I was also taught that everyone is equal regardless of race, nationality, gender, sexual orientation, religion, etc.

But Fox became big because EVERYTHING was filtered through a liberal,left media and middle of the road and conservatives got fed up with it. Fox is huge now. Blows other networks out of the water. But how uneducated does a person have to be to take some clips of any media outlet as hard evidence? i've seen many clips of africans dancing with drums and nazi soldiers marching. However, common sense told me that those images couldn't be the sum of those lives and cultures. And after that, I went on to search more info. People choose to believe the worst about the others because it makes them feel superior.

I know the media only shows the interesting things, but we don't judge other countries based on media, so you guys shouldn't either! We hardley ever see news about Ireland. Don't blame the American media, it's YOUR media that shows these things that America does. Because you don't see American media... you don't live in America. It's the UK media doing it.

i get what your saying about other countires opinions based on the news they get showing
negative things that we do i can understand why they would feel that way.I agree with you on that. i think that could hold true for any country basing their opinion on another country based only on what they see. And if they are constantly shown negative things then they are going to make a judgement about all its people. I dont mind the rambling,its kinda cute. Even your cat has an opinion lol :)

One of my closest friends is English and I'm fine with that, he has never gone out and taken anything from anyone here, no, he went to school and now he works.
I don't hate him for what his ancestors did, it's not something I do.

What I meant is that us Americans need to grow up and be less judgmental and hear people out and take time to form a worthy opinion before we start making nonsensical hate rants. I'm an American, & I rarely watch news. It's too depressing. I read comic book news and I'm 25, sad, I know. But just today as I was hoping to hear Obama might be ahead, and I stopped only to hear a story about child abuse, a crazy guy with a chainsaw in a homeless shelter and Ann Coulter talking up the Confederacy. I'm not kidding. So I can easily see how others can see us as nutjobs. But I'm optimistic, when I see a lot of good conversations on sites like this between all kinds of people.

I have an essay to do now on terrorism, based on Ted Honderichs ideas actually.
I want to focus on the whole notion of truth as it applies to these definitions and the applications of terms to groups.
Actually CKs video on waterboarding, which brought up the American governments inability to adequately define torture, should provide some ideas for my essay.

I find these forums excellent places to explore own thoughts and of course challenge them...it's as though the 'truth' is continuously and perpetually unravelling. But of course, only my truth! Your essay sounds really interesting. Can I suggest you hang onto it so that in years to come you can revisit and compare how your ideas have (maybe) changed? I wish I'd done same!

There's a good chance I'll still have this essay as I'll have a soft copy on my HD.
