I've actually had that disc idea before. Not the idea of making the cover part of it though, that's kind of crappy. I like them to be seperate. But I could imagine a player that would read a disc through a protective clam shell type casing so that the information can be registered, but if the shell gets scratched up the disc is fine and you just replace the shell. Oh, and I am just like that guy, I have an obsession with movie and music box art. Glad to see I'm not alone!

For those of you that don't know, the disc inside is basically a black vinyl record-ish media with a hole in the middle about roughly the size of a laserdisc's. Obviously, there's no label, but it's interesting to see the grooves and the pattern they make when held up to light.

If certain financial issues hadn't occurred, as well as a shift in management at RCA, CED would have beaten Laserdisc, and even VHS to market.

Random guy is almost right: the CED's work pretty much like a vinyl record does, except the grooves of a CED disc are much smaller and produce an FM signal that through the player's electronics is transmitted to a A/V signal.

My uncle had one of these when I was a kid. It constantly skipped, you could not get through any movie. You can take it out of the case by using something like a paper clip to push the tabs on both sides of the top of the case. It has grooves like a record, and the laser read the disk like the needle on a record player. I didn't go through ALL of the comments, so I may not be the only one that posted this info.

You can open these without breaking it. Take 2 pencils and stick them in the small square slots with a arrow that you can push on, Push on both on both sides and you can pull out the tray and see the disk. And these were called "Video Disk Players" back when I had one
