If Edward Teach were alive he would die laughing at the Somali pirates and their ignorance. Maybe if Somali's could read, they could research and learn a thing or two from Mr. Teach.
I have watched all 3 parts of this documentary and i observed that the root of Piracy is Poverty! the only reason why they became a Pirate is because they are poor, but being a poor is not excuse to do not good, use you talent on a reasonable things.
@jojomatnog its true...but if you are from these country where you can't absolutely do anything...what do you after that? Somalia is a war torn country with no government running it.
The translation from the "Somali pirate" into English is laughable at best. However, the guy has a Djiboutien dialect rather than a Somali. A pretense scenario was undoubtedly set up by his "fixers". Poor Ross.
The Batan Island guys are tripping. Somalian pirates don't spray AK's upon entrance of boats. Mostly non-violent. Is Russia going to pay for killing 12 pirates?? Probably not, but interesting that there death didn't make western news. I wonder what that Somali pirate was really saying? Slanted subtitles perhaps.
Ross Kemp is probably the bravest bloke I've ever seen...he goes into war zones, talks to pirates who're used to cut throats n' stuff...he's got balls.
Is it just me, or was he (in the last minute or so) about to explain that piracy isn't a problem at sea, but a problem at land (no jobs, no economy, no government, no police, no future) - but then they decided to cut it out during editing?
@TheTrueRandomness i think the land bit was trying to say, look on land for the big boss and then you might stop pirate's at sea , obviously the big boss tells the pirates what to do , he is on land
Great show. A real insight, who would have thought that the Mitchell bruvvahs could deliver more than a good beating. Nigeria is a mess More power to MEND
Haha, Just had a brilliant moment then. Had ultimate force on pause in the background of this, then suddenly the Intro music started as he asked how you train to be a pirate.
"how do you train to be a pirate *ultimate force theme*
That's always been the case, they are heavily armed, well trained, usually using the latest gizmos like GPS and the like, and they are doing it for pure profit. The Somails are just fucking desperate. Also - despite their reputation, the Somalis are actually generally peaceful as far as pirates go (even though they carry AK47's, they try not to kill anyone). The Indonesian pirates often carry 50 caliber machineguns, and have been known to kill entire crews mercillesly and steal whole ships.
u have no idea what ur talkin abt , at the end its all about the money they make. indonesian pirates make a couple of thousand for every ship, somali pirates make millions. go look it up

I'm a Master of Pirate's..majoring in Foreign Sea's !!
To those "chicken feeds" Indon's pirates you are no-where compared to the Somalians pirate's..!!
To the Somalians pirates, you guys will be much more respected . If you strikes on US merchants vessel much more..such as the President Lines to name a few.!!
European ships too, like the Maersk Lines etc..
Then only they'll know , this is a means-serious business and a very lucrative occupation. And one always win...!!
I'm from Somalia and Puntland is no where near djibouti.Somaliland is in between so I don't know where Ross Kemp met this "fake" pirate. The translation is very bad.
I'm a UK born Somali and even though Somali is my 2nd language,I can see that the translation is crap. The subtitles hardly match what the guy is saying.
Can you give me any idea what he might be saying or hinting at different from the overall perspective of the documentary? I'm an Anthropologist student at University of California, Santa Cruz. Thank you Kalani.
Why isn't there private security groups being used to escort ships in these dangerous waters ?
If you look at how popular the use of private security is in Iraq and the kind of service they can provide etc. etc. then why has no big league Security firm joined the ranks of protecting on seas as well as land ?
Yeah I was thinking this but I think the ship owners wouldnt want armed people on their boats for insurance reasons and the fact that it would make them technically pirates too I think. Dont hold me to it!
I would imagine its possible for these big security firms offering world wide protection to foreign Royal Families and Government agencies etc. etc. could easily work on the seas just like they already do on land.
I guess with the chances of catching the pirates in the act and detaining/killing them is pretty slim, I would think most security firms just can't be doing with the expenses time and effort to keep sailing back and forth in search of fleeting and sneaky pirates.
But you're right - they should. It's dangerous but maybe if they just worked as support with the Navy as another pair of eyes it'd make things easier...
Yeah but bearing in mind that there are hundreds of frigates/freighters travelling each day, the cost of private escort would be pretty exponential, not to mention the distance they're travelling in total would add more expense as opposed to just having a few warships bobbing around.
@yggdrasil89 I think its way cheaper to employ security forces on the merchant ships instead of having warship escorting the merchant ship..
I reckon a couple of armed PMC can stop the pirates or at best buy time for military support... Cmon PMC are protecting private companies at Iraq.. why not at Somali..
@redeye117 There are tons of crappy laws preventing a lot of countries from doing that, still putting a bunch of marines onboard couldn't hurt, just give them more than a few assault rifles, I mean these pirates use RPGs, if you ask me you need something better as a counter.
Still in the end the only way to end is to stop giving these people a reason to do it :(
there are indeed private security firms running ops for the shipping companys, normally the guys will only be on board in the areas where pirates are known to operate.
its a big money business and more and more PMCs are getting involved.
good post. real eye opening stuff! its good to see the true state that some parts of the world live in, and as a result, resort to things like piracy! nice post!
How is the money actually transferred?I think this stinks to high heaven of government corruption. The point about flying the flags of convenience,is a very important one,to be looked at in depth. There's probably more money to be made there, than piracy alone, you know, register your ship here, for X amount of dollars, and we'll protect you in the danger areas? Great docu. Thanks for the upload.
Not so much the Government, usually the ships are handled by shipping agents. I know there is a lot of corruption within that, they will charge a fee to the pirates for the information, with that will be everything, cargo, crew nationality, flag etc All ships will carry cash, i should probably think it would be easy to create a seperatate account for transfers in these kind of countries. Im a 3rd Engineer and my company wont send me to any of these areas as im English, i become a prime target
