  • I've climbed it several times and have always followed the advice to be heading down from the summit by noon to avoid afternoon storms and lightning. This requires a very early start from the trailhead.

  • I've been up there. That had to be spooky.

  • CLIMBING IN 2 WEEKS!

  • didnt that lightning scare the crap out of you guys? ive been up their above tree line when storms move in like that and haul ass back down below tree line but if your in the boulderfield you have awhile before you make it back though, ride it out and hope you dont get struck. I climbed longs also in august and very cloudy , from summit couldnt even see meeker or the boulderfield, oh well next year right .. still an awesome experience.

  • Did this occur on August 6, 2008 by chance?

  • Nope. August 25, 2008. I have heard that it happens often though. You get caught in the same?

  • Yes. We were just coming out of the trough to the ledges on our way back when rain, hail, and lightening hit with a vengence. It was a truly sobering experience.
