This is just in my opinion but I feel like this guy isn't taking his role seriously enough. His singing's pretty good but he makes his angry tones so over the top it's hard to take him seriously. There's to much in his voice and not enough emotion in his face
@Salieri1760 I beg to differ! He puts on a strong front, but look at 1:40 - 1:44. His face conveys a subtle startled expression as he looks around at the ravenous mob. He knows the reputation Herod has (Which is why Mary screams). The way he glances around at the crowd really gets me.
I enjoy this version of JCS. However, one thing that is distracting is that it often seems like we're in a gay leather bar. For example, this Pilate looks like he's dressed to play the role of dominator in an S & M scene. Very disconcerting! :-)
I love his expression at the end. Indicates that everything before that was just grandstanding, looking like the big tough general for the sake of the crowd. It puts his overly hammer performance into perspective.
I can't take Pilate seriously here. His voice is one of the better ones in this version, but he clearly attended the Captain Kirk school of acting. I keep waiting for him to shout: "KHAAAN!"
As much as I like the original version I must say that THIS version of Pilate takes the part to whole new level. Quite brilliant. What an excellent portrayal of naked power and authority.
I hate to be mean, but while the original Jesus looked like Jesus and was attractive...this one seem to have gotten some Tommy Wiseau D.N.A in him. Eesh
Upon reading some of the comments here I disagree, Pilate isn't blatantly evil in this adaption. To me I saw without a doubt the conflicting emotions he shared throughout the musical. In Pilate's Dream you saw him as a man, someone alone in his quarters being troubled by a dream. Then you see him here in his uniform- a man of the state. He can't be that sympathetic; its his job. Then you see his emotion unveiling more at Jesus' trial, he tries to save him but cant. Favorite. Movie. Ever.
@Komnenit Well, it's really not fair to compare them in that way- Dennen's Pilate was a man way out of his depth and clearly frightened about the situation growing out his hands, and attempts to hide it by cruelly mocking Jesus to the bitter end, which of course falls apart as we see by the ends of his songs.
I prefer the '73 version myself, mainly because the acting is far subtler and Dennen shows a greater range and depth in the character.
0:04 The first time I heard that it scared the hell out of me! I couldn't believe where that sound was coming from. He brings every line in this song with such conviction. Fred Johanson is truly a wonderful actor/singer.
Okey, so I watched this movie.I have to admit, if there was no 70 make of this movie, I would like this more. There are good parts... but then there are bad barts, that can be so compared to the earlier make. It seemed to have gone in to a different direction in the character of Pilatus and Judas. In the old one you could feel compassion, and actually understand why they did what they did. In this one, they are the same old "EVIL!" with a capital E. So nothing different, nothing THAT interesting
@narmolania Um , watch it again . Judas was no different from his portrayal in the `70s Film except for his actor , race , costume and the way he conveyed his feelings . He was still a conflicted , misguided , well-intentioned social activist , pacifist and proud Jew who admired Jesus but was disgusted by the militant attitude of the other apostles which he feared would incite Roman wrath against The Jews .And , 2000 Pilate has more human scenes just as 1973 Pilate has cruel scenes .
The 2000 version was great for execution, agreeing with Webber himself that it's fateful to the modernization the actual Broadway version does. However, I think the major flaw with it IMO is the botched characterization - Judas is not sympathetic as he should be, Pilate is tyrant as opposed to understanding and fearful of Jesus, Jesus is too sexualized (and almost arrogant) than He should be.
Not denying the performance isn't great but doesn't sit too well with me as opposed to the 70s movie.
I don't know if I like this interpretation of Pilate, but damit. I believe in every word he say, what an actor! I laugh at every word and eye expression because it so good..! :) 1:03 to 1:09...
fred johansons voice is pretty annoying but he is a pretty scary authority figure. the pilot in the 73 movie was way too weak. overcompensation for that maybe?
I believe Jesus was scared at first. But I believe he thought of us and was strengthend..............and remember God sent an angel to give him strength. He wanted to die for us. I'm really sad that people think he died out of obligation instead of love.
I absolutely love this version of Pilate and Christ. The original productions (Broadway and film), had Pilate as a weakling. But now, Pilate displays the true strength of the great Roman Empire!
Besides, Fred Johanson's facial expressions are priceless, especially when he goes: "That IS NOT an answer...."
I agree, he could definately play the devil in some movie lol. He's the only character in this one that i wouldn't change with the 70's version. He has a really good voice :]
Somehow I want him to play the Devil or something!! I mean... look at him! the voice, the looks! And the intimidating charisma... He would be a decent devil, satan or demon... whatever! I love it!
