It's hard to articulate an "ooh" or "ah". It's much easier on the voice (and easier to be accurate to the piece being performed) to put a consonant sound on the front of such a vowel sound. So, it might be annoying, but it would sound much worse if it was a bunch of vowels with no consonant breaks.
