Such patrols by soldiers look weird in cities. They have been organized since the 1990s, in public places like trains stations or monuments, mainly as a measure to prevent terrorism, since France was a target for Algerian & Mid-eastern Islamists. That was long before the US declared the "war on terror"!

The legion AND the Marine Commandos (equivalence of US navy seals) do wear the green beret in French army forces. The difference is that marine commandos wear it at the english manner, turned on the other side. They're the only ones to wear it like that, in memory of the 1st french commandos who where trained in Scotland during ww2.

They can't shoot you. If you look carefully at the FAMAS, there is no magazine. Soldiers are not allowed to put a magazine in the chamber during a patrol in public. Magazine is only inserted upon order from the commanding officer or when a terrorist has opened fire. Even before opening fire, he has to shout a warning summon 3 times before he can shoot. Unless a shot has been fired by a terrorist.

That's not what I learned in the LE. If anyone points a gun at me I'm allowed to shoot him, and always BEFORE going patrol the sgt will order "disposition combat" which means put in the mag and get the first round in the chamber.. lock n load, basically.

It's an individualized weapon and it is very accurate when the settings are set to a designated person. That's why we don't swap FAMAS between soldiers in the army. If you are not the soldier that the settings are set for, you won't be able to shoot straight. Magazines were kept short because initially it was a parachutist rifle. The new generations use the STANAG variation.
