in my opinion medievil 2 total war and rome total war are the best. i cant give an opinion on the shogun ones though because ive never played them. empire had a lot of glitches and crashed on me a few times. they could improve medievil and rome if they made sequels with navy battle and tactical gameplay.
@sbcfootball they're all great for features and graphics shogun 2 though. however every1 in the series is a class so get the one which time period suits u the most

I have played 100 hours of Rome, about 300 hours of Napoleon, 700 hours of Empire, and over 2000+ hours on medieval. Sorry but medieval was by far the most fun.
when i am in a seige and have good towers i have 3 of my best units, not general, to stand in front of the gate. Between the soliders, archers, and towers if they kill my men and destroy the gate they dont have anymore units left to attack.

I owned 700+ byzantines before in a seige on the island near Egypt. I took from the Byzantines, and sent my men to the mainland, only left 2 pilgrims and 1 english spearman.
They sneaked attack me by landing 700men when my army was too far away. I owned them by holding the gatehouse and the nearby towers. The AI was so stupid they lost 500+men(including wounded) by attacking my pilgrims camping the door on the battlements and letting the towers do the work. They even placed archers and cavalry
OMFG MEDIEVAL II is the easiest game i've ever played the CPU is unbelivably stupid especially on the campaign map - there is no chance to lose!!! When i played as France i dismissed all my troops and just wait for the computers to attacked me but for around a 100 turns i lost only one or 2 cities (on very hard) - Rome is so much harderq i don't know why?!??!?!?
@rospero since you're fairly finished with medieval 2, i advise that you get the stainless steel mod for it. it is free and a very large download, but it's worth it. it gives new faction, makes the map bigger, with a lot more cites/castles, more mercs, it makes the game harder, and it lets you choose whether you start in the early era or in the late era. there are other mods out there, free mods, that can make the computer AI smarter or harder if you find your game is too easy.
@Rosstarvo u where right. i solved moth ago my pal fixed it. the problem was the fact that it WAS overheating and my computer had 3 serios virusess all from myserios sources. i think its because of runescape because that time rs was hacked. But thx for the advice ill keep in mind this always
i have a problem. after i play mtw2 a while it starts to lag. and dosent stop until i have restarted my computer. i have put all possible settings in graphic to lowest possuble. sound isnt the prob because my computer kinda suck in grapichs but not that bad to start lag after 2 mins of gameplay! can anyone suggest anything? hmm, a question, how about if the enemy doesn't siege,(they just wait at the front of a citadel/city) should we wait for them or just leave the Citadel/city?
most times when i have that, i put all melee units in front of the wall, and all archers on the walls. and then i wait 1 minute, and then the enemy starts his attack
@cloudinas Whenever you are being sieged, you should put a battle time limit on 15 minutes to prevent that from happening. You can do it in the Campaign Map view by pressing Escape and choosing options, and ticking off the box.
Oh, I really thanks for you...Cause, you know, fighting without time limit, makes me felt fed-up...They always wait at the outside (Like real pussy, but I think it is also a smart way, but still a pussy way)
@cloudinas Yea, I have had a couple of victories thanks to them just standing there. I was British, and I had 1 Militia Crossbowmen group, 1 Hobilar group, and 2 Archer Militia groups; and I won against an entire scottish army of many Pikemen, Archers and a few cavalry, about 11 groups all together. Incredible, really!

I dont understand why the AI always brings the entire army up to the gate along with the ram. Should just send some peasants up there and smash it open then send in the rest, to avoid loses from the firepower on the walls innit.
sorry to said this but your tatic have a few flaws.
1.its only seem useful for custom games.
2. you need the right units to work.
3.there have been rarely cases where 3 units light infanty can beat back a standard army can you do that?
and 4 playing on hard and very hard mode on that stage wont be easy without your dismounted knights around and your knights cant be everywhere on the Grand campagin any advice on that?
Worked well. I usually put two (or three) units of spear either side of the gate in schiltrom to form a meat grinder, and some heavy infantry behind them to cut down anything that pushes through. Keep the general nearby and they'll destroy or rout anything that comes through that gate. Never fails on a single breach like this.
CA screwed up the pikes in this game. when heavycavalry charges into my terico pikes only like 15 die. in rome total war pikes would have worked. i want a new Medievial exactly the same exep for diplomacy,AI,and pike effectiveness.
im thinking about getting a GeForce 8900GT graphics card and i have a GeForce 8400Si ... now how much better would my gameplay be and would the graphics be able to play on highest detail no lag i have all the other requirements
but if u have around 4000 units in the game it starts to get laggy and the game even advices you that ur computer cant hold that much, but its hard to have all those units, only at online or custom battle

well i dunno but my laptop has 4 gb with 2.5 ghz duo core but im guessing your video card isnt as advanced enough cuz you can have p4 and still run it smoothly
My vista can play it perfectly smoothly with huge unit option and pretty much high in all of the graphic options (excluding post-processing or whatever their called). I only have 2 gig ram, 8600GT, and 1.87 duo core.
I think you give the enemy a bigger army and some of those seige buildings which run up to the walls, that'd be a good challenge, But this is a very good way of a direct gate smashing technique :P
You should have the archers on the walls; your catapults along with the general lined up along the walls and infront of the gate; infantry on "top" of the catapults; and pikes as the front line and place your cavalry on the left flank of your army outside the city. This way you have a better chance of winning; and you won't lose as many men. :b
place 3 groups of spearmen in schiltron formation at the gate. this impedes their advance. once the enemy is caught at that chokepoint, you just run your remaining infanty in to finish them off. also, in kingdoms you get to man the gate and boiling oil will rain down...very disappointing that you can't then light that place up with flaming arrows though
Thats what I always do. 3 spearmen in schiltron formation at the breach, with plenty of militia troops behind them to fill the gaps. Then some cavalry at the back ready to capture the routing enemy so they dont try and attack again any time soon.
All a man really needs is a trebutchet in a siege def. Rotting cows ftw. That and lots of spearmen.. Well maybe Schiltrom isn't that good.. Spearwall is better :P works well for those damn mongolians. Oh and by the way, how many of you think that it's a good enough reward to get all the nations playable after conquering every territory? I was kinda dissapointed..
Cities at the borders, I usually keep a balista in them for siege defence. I place it on the side, facing towards the gate, or on an elevated position which reaches the gate with its fire missles. It's devastating for morale when it hits, and it can take allot of men out in one go, especially if they were cramped up together.
This just proves how poor the AI is, i mean attacking a good castle with one ram? shameful... and when you put the difficulty to hard it just makes their units harder to kill. I really hope they work on the AI for Empire. You really should make a video of two human opponents it much more interesting.
what kind of attacker only uses a ram... get some trebu. cata. and siege towers + the ram and attack at all angles... fail for the invading army.take out the towers with trebs and cata. take the walls with hv. inf. replace walls with archers and start ur seige on the square with spearmen and followed up with ur remaining Hv. inf. and calv when a spot opens up in the ranks.its harder to do then say but its a basic consept of somewhat proper siege with minor changes according to what ur enemy has.
the best tactic is to place archers that can make wooden spikes in the ground infront of the gates. so any horses that come through get instantly killed ;)
before the battle, where you can place your troops, i only can get them in an other position but i ccannot make them watch to the were i want, you know what i mean?
so, how can i make them look to the gates like you did with your spearmen?
to hold the gate house i put my spear men in an orderly line and it works just as good block the enemy up and get ur archers to fire while there busy = they always run !!
and the imortals(yes they existed, but not in that deformed and monsterish state)had very light, yet effective chain mail, which was probably too small a link to let the large spear heads pass through it.
I'm persian. so i am naturaly opposed to the baised movie. first, the sheild wall of the spartans was very effective, the pass they chose to fight in took away the persian's number advantage(and not a million billion trillion, like you americans like to think)bu t the large sheilds would block the spartans view as the blocked arrows, leaving them vulnerable to slashing charges.
I love the game, but I think they made this part way to "fair".
For one I mean you have an army of half naked warriors keeping up a fight with GOTHIC FOOT KNIGHTS! IN REAL LIFE; Gothic knights will just simply run them over like if they were grass!
And how in EARTH do SOME troops with less armor but just as professional, and with the same or weaker weapon have a better deface level?
But the move has them nothing but a helmet and a big shield.
Historically the Greeks and yes the Spartans were very, very well armored! The Persians had little to no armor... And yes the Spartans were that great of warriors!
this can be destroyed if units are pushed to far away from each other and pushed up on walls. most the time it works until someone has some very good heavy infantry. also if calvary from enemy attacks from the back it will push the other units forward so always have archers on the walls to kill them when they ride in! :) i play on VH/VH and it is pretty easy
for msot battles i use the same tactic, ill leave two units at the front gates, not on the walls, but close enough so that 4 towers are active, then when the walls fall or gates break i pull them back to where the rest of my army is located, when the enemy come racing through the street to my square my archers let loose, and my spearmen hodl the line, never fails.
I use that tactic myself, think of it as a killing pit, your troops are ready set up on the other side of the wall, shoulder to shoulder, only enemies from the front, whereas the enemy are surrounded, except for the way they came,their numbers don't help, as they are backlogged in the gate, they can only move into battle after seeing their comrades flee or die, you can see at the end the mass route, the domino effect of one unit routing infront of about 5 others(yeah, I'm a nerd and proud;).
dude that formation ruins the game. its way to simple and easy to defend wtih it, especially if you use boiling oil it gets so easy no adjustments needed.
your game is realy slow...i need greater graphics right?.....512 MB will do the job very well...but you will need RAM memory to make the game work very well
this game is really big. it takes lot of space and resource. if u have vista or have lag often with things like internet or vid stuff like that, you will most likey to lag (alot).
my pc is brand new. Im running on vista with a gig of ram and a dual core processor, and an nvidia graphics card of some sort that my dad bought me for like £200, but its good. Every game runs smoothly and perfectly apart from stronghold, even with everything turned down, including turning shadows off! So is stronghold just a dodgy piece of code, or is it my pc
Then you don't know how to clean your PC, thats horrible, I'm running on single core 3.2, 2GB ram 800GHZ (speed) and 512MB 7300GT video card, I can run on very high with no lag.

well i dunno but my laptop has 4 gb with 2.5 ghz duo core but im guessing your video card isnt as advanced enough cuz you can have p4 and still run it smoothly

Yes, it runs perfectly on Vista, but make sure you have a good card to run it, as my current vista cannot run it with a motherboard videocard.

My vista can play it perfectly smoothly with huge unit option and pretty much high in all of the graphic options (excluding post-processing or whatever their called). I only have 2 gig ram, 8600GT, and 1.87 duo core.

I think you give the enemy a bigger army and some of those seige buildings which run up to the walls, that'd be a good challenge, But this is a very good way of a direct gate smashing technique :P

You should have the archers on the walls; your catapults along with the general lined up along the walls and infront of the gate; infantry on "top" of the catapults; and pikes as the front line and place your cavalry on the left flank of your army outside the city. This way you have a better chance of winning; and you won't lose as many men. :b

best strategy for holding gatehouse i've seen:
place 3 groups of spearmen in schiltron formation at the gate. this impedes their advance. once the enemy is caught at that chokepoint, you just run your remaining infanty in to finish them off. also, in kingdoms you get to man the gate and boiling oil will rain down...very disappointing that you can't then light that place up with flaming arrows though

Thats what I always do. 3 spearmen in schiltron formation at the breach, with plenty of militia troops behind them to fill the gaps. Then some cavalry at the back ready to capture the routing enemy so they dont try and attack again any time soon.

All a man really needs is a trebutchet in a siege def. Rotting cows ftw. That and lots of spearmen.. Well maybe Schiltrom isn't that good.. Spearwall is better :P works well for those damn mongolians. Oh and by the way, how many of you think that it's a good enough reward to get all the nations playable after conquering every territory? I was kinda dissapointed..

Cities at the borders, I usually keep a balista in them for siege defence. I place it on the side, facing towards the gate, or on an elevated position which reaches the gate with its fire missles. It's devastating for morale when it hits, and it can take allot of men out in one go, especially if they were cramped up together.
Using spikes is probably cheating :p

This just proves how poor the AI is, i mean attacking a good castle with one ram? shameful... and when you put the difficulty to hard it just makes their units harder to kill. I really hope they work on the AI for Empire. You really should make a video of two human opponents it much more interesting.

what kind of attacker only uses a ram... get some trebu. cata. and siege towers + the ram and attack at all angles... fail for the invading army.take out the towers with trebs and cata. take the walls with hv. inf. replace walls with archers and start ur seige on the square with spearmen and followed up with ur remaining Hv. inf. and calv when a spot opens up in the ranks.its harder to do then say but its a basic consept of somewhat proper siege with minor changes according to what ur enemy has.

the best tactic is to place archers that can make wooden spikes in the ground infront of the gates. so any horses that come through get instantly killed ;)

hold down you're right mouse button and move your mouse around and it'll let you move the direction and angle you're troops are facing. good luck.

to hold the gate house i put my spear men in an orderly line and it works just as good block the enemy up and get ur archers to fire while there busy = they always run !!

I'm persian. so i am naturaly opposed to the baised movie. first, the sheild wall of the spartans was very effective, the pass they chose to fight in took away the persian's number advantage(and not a million billion trillion, like you americans like to think)bu t the large sheilds would block the spartans view as the blocked arrows, leaving them vulnerable to slashing charges.

I love the game, but I think they made this part way to "fair".
For one I mean you have an army of half naked warriors keeping up a fight with GOTHIC FOOT KNIGHTS! IN REAL LIFE; Gothic knights will just simply run them over like if they were grass!
And how in EARTH do SOME troops with less armor but just as professional, and with the same or weaker weapon have a better deface level?

The 300 Spartans? Yes I did.
But the move has them nothing but a helmet and a big shield.
Historically the Greeks and yes the Spartans were very, very well armored! The Persians had little to no armor... And yes the Spartans were that great of warriors!

this can be destroyed if units are pushed to far away from each other and pushed up on walls. most the time it works until someone has some very good heavy infantry. also if calvary from enemy attacks from the back it will push the other units forward so always have archers on the walls to kill them when they ride in! :) i play on VH/VH and it is pretty easy

for msot battles i use the same tactic, ill leave two units at the front gates, not on the walls, but close enough so that 4 towers are active, then when the walls fall or gates break i pull them back to where the rest of my army is located, when the enemy come racing through the street to my square my archers let loose, and my spearmen hodl the line, never fails.

I use that tactic myself, think of it as a killing pit, your troops are ready set up on the other side of the wall, shoulder to shoulder, only enemies from the front, whereas the enemy are surrounded, except for the way they came,their numbers don't help, as they are backlogged in the gate, they can only move into battle after seeing their comrades flee or die, you can see at the end the mass route, the domino effect of one unit routing infront of about 5 others(yeah, I'm a nerd and proud;).

dude that formation ruins the game. its way to simple and easy to defend wtih it, especially if you use boiling oil it gets so easy no adjustments needed.

I think siege maps a big coz if you dont have enough distance from the castle walls then its easy for the enemy to snipe you from their walls.
But seriously i think rome total war is comparatively better coz its gives almost the same performance but at a lower system resource.

I dont get why the maps are so big in sieges.
I would think that if the designers gave siege assaults a smaller map, it might lag less.

this game is really big. it takes lot of space and resource. if u have vista or have lag often with things like internet or vid stuff like that, you will most likey to lag (alot).

my pc is brand new. Im running on vista with a gig of ram and a dual core processor, and an nvidia graphics card of some sort that my dad bought me for like £200, but its good. Every game runs smoothly and perfectly apart from stronghold, even with everything turned down, including turning shadows off! So is stronghold just a dodgy piece of code, or is it my pc

Then you don't know how to clean your PC, thats horrible, I'm running on single core 3.2, 2GB ram 800GHZ (speed) and 512MB 7300GT video card, I can run on very high with no lag.
