This technic he shows is amazingly functional to my eye of experienced boxer. It's good for its simplicity, because under the adrenalin rush that's the only thing that works. This could be well used in mma, rather than all kinds of fancy wu shu styles.
@vinograd007 believe it or not classical styles are best used by those who boxed/wrestled/jujitsued/muythaied.
its becaue they know angles of attack and are used to things being thrown at them. they understand the base destuctive power of tiger and other forms of hsing i. they know how small movement timed hit harder then big muscle swings.
@Anandfulness advantage is such a wide open word. i feel that if you really enjoy your art and continually grow within it then that's the key. but to try and answer your question in a fight i always say it depends of the person. in hsing-i training the focus is more on developing tendon power which will increase as you age where as the inverse is usually true of the external artist since the focus is on muscular development. in my opinion this is the main advantage between internal and external
@BambooMountain I think internal arts will take what ever martial art you are learning to another level and then theres the health side to. I don't think external arts can make you healthy like Tai Chi or Hsing.
@Anandfulness it is the generating of chi (qi), I mean every style even every activity generates and manipulates chi but internal styles shows you ways how to do it. As BambooMountain said you need to love your art and everything it involves, if you dont like this " chi stuff" and this meditative and yogic aspects of a martial art it is just nothing for ya ;)
@HerBareS I chose for martial arts because of the self-defense aspect, but now I'm staying with it because I also appreciate the quality it brings to my life in other aspects.
As for Chi, I believe you can use your body mechanics and rigorous training to exceed a normal person's power and achieve a certain 'state'. But some ''chi stuff'' is bullshit, there are charlatans everywhere, and some ''chi stuff'' isn't because it is based on logic and experience. I believe what I see with my own eyes.
@Anandfulness only 0.005% of this "chi stuff" is done directly in a martial art. Chi means to bring your body, mind and enviroment in a harmony so the energy in your body, wich have every living body cause of circulation and dinamics, can do the maximum. In life, in love and on the battlefield. To know an application or be able tho use amazing body mehanichs have not much to do with chi it maybe acumulates it. Chi isnt magic energy meant to be shot from your body to hurt someone...
@weefunker ya hsing-i has been used on the battle field in many wars pre and post fire arms. it was also considered the body guard style in china. its reputation stands on its own. as for personal knowledge, i have worked as a bouncer for over 20 years now, i'm 145 lbs soaking wet and i'm still here.
Well done and interesting approach. But Honan Style Xinyi has no WuXing (Elemental) methods. Only ten animals and various other Ba (methods). Seems like Hebei Xingyi.
Thank you! That's is generally true about the Muslim style, but there are some factions that use the 5 elements. I am not sure if they implemented it later borrowing from one of the other systems or if it was originally part of their system.
Most likely these factions are versed in more than just Honan Style. They prolly also do eithr Shanxi or Hebei as well. But no WuXing in Honan beyond conceptual content.
WuXing (5 Elements) is the modern evolution of San Quan (3 Fists) of Dai Clan Gongfu (Pre-Xinyi). Honan is most similar to Xinyi's original appearance. Thus WuXing was something added by Dai Family when they learnd Honan Xin Yi Liu He from Li Zheng. Which is why u dont find WuXing in Honan. I also suspect another reason is that as WuXing is Daoist concept, and Honan Xinyi people were predominantly Moslem (Hui).
Also Honan is not Xingyi, its Xinyi. XINYI and XINGYI although related are very different methods. Honan Xinyi and Hebei Xingyi are miles apart in both shape and tactic & approach (power gen). All due respect the method in the clip looks to be 100% Hebei Xingyi. But then, you know more about your method than I. Only my opinion.
Well DaiBoxer you are correct on all accounts and your opinion is a very educated one that I am grateful to have. I queried my teacher and he said he taught me the Hebei 5 elements and the 10 animal as a modified system. He believes this combination to very be beneficial.Thank you for that or else I would never have asked and continued my assumptions and misrepresentations. Much appreciated.
Is it possible to be both? I love the history because it helps me understand why it is the way it is, but I love the doing just as much if not more, especially pi chuan for some reason. One of these days when I get a camera hopefully you'll see :)
Absolutely possible. But important to be clear on the respective methods as some aspects may be similar, other aspects are miles apart. For example, the dynamic of fighting in Xinyi's Hu Bu (Tiger Step/Gong Bu) vs Xingyi's Santi is vastly different. The 2 have unrelated power gen methods that make them effective. Plus, in this case of evolution, one method did not replace the other, they both still exist as different but related methods. But yeah training Xinyi and Xingyi? Devastating.
I myself learned, practice, & teach an amalgamated system (Xinyidao) which consists of Shanxi Che Style Xingyi and Dai Family Xinyi Quan. Either one serves an individual purpose in terms of strategy. And Xinyi is much more difficult and time consuming to develop skill in. Cheers.
Of course, the moves vary a lot. Are these moves Honan style? I study Hebei and a little Shanxi style, but not Honan. Would you have other vids about this style? I'm very curious. Thank you again for posting and replying!
yes, it is the honan style, from haka heritage. i do have other vids but some where lost in a computer crash and what i have left is still on vhs. this system is closely related to the hebei school. i believe the connection is through sun lutang, but my history is not that good.
i have learned a bit of the other hsing-i styles, shanxi and hebei , but my teacher prefers the honan style so that was my major study in hsing-i.
Some of these moves seem quite far from the originals to me (pi quan especially), and some blockings look easier on a nice sparring partner than in real life, but still, very interesting applications. Thank you very much for posting.
hsing-i has variances in the forms and movements from provincial style to style. also, there is a difference from the original forms and the republic of china's standardized versions (which are the most proliferated at this point).
and yes i agree everything looks better with a willing partner.
Awesome video! You just gave me some good ideas for combat. I've always struggled with pi chuan, and have been throwing it as a heel of the hand strike.
great video

I'm curious, what advantages does Hsing-I have compared to muay thai or other ''hard'' styles?

@BambooMountain : Thank you, yes, this style seems more like a path of life than just something you learn to defend yourself.

The student needs to actually punch that's a bad attack, Xingyi works, it's a great art, he's making it look bad.

Anyone ever actually used this in a fight? doesn't seem as though it would work in real life to be honest

Youve focused on the 'doing' rather than being a 'history buff' to sound all clever and stuff. And Id take fighter over history buff anyday. Cheers.

Lol! Yes I have always been a pragmatist. I started training in Tai Chi and discovered Xingyi. I immediately liked it's no nonsense approach.
Thank you again for all your kind words.
