The idea that Picard would sacrifice so many crew members just to get back at the borg is ridiculous, and so is everything else in the stupid movie. @otherjr I like Redlettermedia and his review of first contact was entertaining but I just didn't agree with some of the things he said. Most notably I think at one point in his review he says that the reason they didn't use the virus against the Borg in "I Borg" was because Picard said that the Borg are a people and have as much right to exist as we do. But he didn't say any such thing he was just talking about Hugh and his rights as an individual not the Borg themselves.

Redlettermedia's reviews can be fun to watch but he doesn't really try to be insightful about what he's reviewing like sfdebris sometimes does. Also I honestly have never really disagreed with any of sfdebris's reviews he's always spot on with what he's reviewing.

@mummra4ever They take Picard, a man who is usually best in the courtroom/diplomacy style setting, and they put him in a stupid action movie, complete with flesh melting gas, tank tops, and swinging around on cables. Picard in general can be rational and more diplomatic about things. But you can't do that with the Borg you can't negotiate with them not to assimilate you and Picard knows this as much as anyone else. You can only take action against them if you want to survive. Picard is a man who will try to negotiate first and find a peaceful solution but he still recognises when he will have to fight to defend his ship and crew. He did so in "Starship Mine" for example.

So ultimately Picard's more rational side ultimately wins out he just needed someone like Lilly to help him see what he was doing and to get his feelings about the Borg out to make him realise that.

When Picard is ordering members of his crew to fight against the Borg no matter what right before this scene it's supposed to show that his judgement is clearly influenced by his obvious hatred for the Borg. And it's not like it's without reason so it's hardly ridiculous. Picard in "Family" expressed how the Borg made him feel weak that he should have been strong enough to stop them but wasn't.

@mummra4ever Picards main strength/weakness is his rationalism and humanity. This is why the Borg episodes of TNG work so well. If this movie had been a slow burner, without any freakin Borg queen or whatever, it might have been good. Picard would have agonised over the right thing to do, we would have maybe got scenes with great dialogue, instead of this ridiculous 'noooooo' and 'the line must be drawn here'. Regardless of motivation, this does not seem like the sort of thing PIcard would say.

I don't think Picard's humanity and rationalism has anything to do with why "Best of Both Worlds" worked or any of the other TNG Borg episodes. "Best of Both Worlds" for example is more of a Riker episode than it is about Picard. If you don't have a problem as to why Picard wouldn't hate the Borg then I don't see why considering all of the other examples I've given as well you wouldn't understand why Picard acts in the way he does.

I thought what we got here was powerful enough to go into Picard's feelings about what the Borg had done to him and because of that how far he was willing to go to not lose to the Borg again. He says at first in denial about how he's not seeking revenge because he has an evolved sensibility but when Lilly compares him to ahab and when he's got all of his feelings about the Borg out he realises that he isn't acting very evolved and that he's putting his crew at risk because of those feelings.

And it's obvious that it still haunts him like when he's reminded of it in "The drumhead" and in the DS9 pilot. And his hatred of the Borg is what makes him prejudge Hugh in "I Borg" as not being an individual and a person that he had become and just seeing him as just another Borg drone before he actually talked to him. So there even before this movie you had a case of Picard's hatred for the Borg affecting his judgement.

@mummra4ever I find Redlettermedia more insightful. I like SFD because its nice to hear someone elses opinion, but Ive also disagreed with him a few times. The problem I have with this is not so much that Picard wouldnt hate the Borg, as the way that he was written. Picard is a thinker, hes rational, hes not action man. If this movie had been about Sisko it would have worked a lot more, because Sisko is passionate, his great strength and weakness is his passion.

Also we know that Picard has a strong attactment to the ships he commands. In this movie he says that he thinks of the Enterprise as being his home and he once told scotty about his fondess for his old ship the stargazer. In "The Battle" at point one is haunted by whether or not he did the right thing when he lost his ship and has expressed regret about past mistakes or other times he feel like he failed like in "Tapestry."

So for Picard to feel how strongly as he does about not losing his ship and to the Borg for that matter seems at least understandable to me and there's plenty that has happened with his character to make his actions here in character enough. Plus this was just a well executed scene with great performances and it was just interesting to see Picard wrestle with his demons.
