@VaultMasterDBT Then what did premiere in 1991? (Aside from the remake of the first CBS series Police Squad featuring Leslie Neilson from the Naked Gun reprising his role from the original series)
Police Squad with Leslie Nielsen was originally produced in 1982, where it had a brief spring run on ABC. Nine years later, with the success of the Naked Gun franchise, CBS re-aired the 1982 series on the heels of the 2 1/2: The Smell of Fear release.
@VaultMasterDBT So it must have been the first TV series Leslie Nielsen was in but not the first CBS series, because the TRUE first CBS series could be I Love Lucy or something like that.
Leslie Nielsen's first regular TV role goes back twenty years ealrlier than Police Squad..during the 1961-62 season, he starred in the ABC police drama The New Breed. His co-star was John Beradino, whom less than a year after the show's cancellation, went on to start his 33-year-run as Dr. Steve Hardy on General Hospital. Before that, however, Nielsen already had a long list of TV guest roles dating back to the early '50s. I'm confused as to your mentioning the "first CBS series"?
@VaultMasterDBT I think I heard it over the end credits of a taping of Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventures in 1991. But I think that I misheard that Police Squad was the predecessor of The Naked Gun movies. So, does THAT answer your question?
Police Squad *was* the predecessor to the Naked Gun movies. I'm still not sure what you were insinuating to be the "first CBS series". You thought Police Squad was Nielsen's first TV series, but for Police Squad to be so wouldn't make any sense, since 1) it originally aired on ABC, and 2), the first CBS show would have occured in 1948. You may have been thrown off with the fact that Police Squad had the LOOK of a '50s show, but in fact was produced almost 30 years later. (Don't mind me..lol)
@VaultMasterDBT Let's just forget I said Police Squad was the first CBS series, and by the way, how come when you make comments like these why don't you just click reply on said comment?
Wikipedia has US fall schedule lists for every year since the 1940s. I would suggest looking at those. Notable fall 1991 debuts on CBS included dramedy Brooklyn Bridge, from Family Ties-creator Gary David Goldberg, and the sitcom Princesses, featuring a pre-Nanny Fran Drescher.
Some forgotten shows(you now them when you see them), a few classics or fondly remembered(Murder She Wrote, Northern Exposure, Murphy Brown, Knots Landing), some filler by my lights(Jake and the Fatman, Rescue 911, Major Dad), and some that went into the short but sweet file(Evening Shade, Brooklyn Bridge--hulu both of them),
