Wow... he is so intelligent, and an amazing musician. This is breathtaking. I want to make everyone who claims to hate country listen to this. I'd hate country, too, if my only idea of it was what's played on the crappy radio stations these days... luckily there are people like Nez out there.
Mike Nesmith said he wrote the song Joanne about his love affair with Joanne Worley from the Laugh Inn TV show, who he used to have wild bisexual orgys with Alan Suess,Dave Madden,Gary Owens,Paul Lynde,Bert Convy and Charles Nelson Reilly.
@1560438 Oh, I heartily HEARTILY agree with you!!!!! It's like the program directors of all the oldies stations go to some convention in Kansas and decide to never play certain songs and artists, especially from the 70s. Thank goodness we can hear those old AT40 shows.
The original "Joanne" was written by Robert Man. He wrote it about a little blonde headed girl that he had a crush on. I believe he said he was 15 or 16 at the time. Rob's mom sold the rights to the song and eventually it made its way to Nesmith. Rob said the music was his, but that Nesmith had changed all the lyrics, except for one verse. Nesmith owned the rights, so was able to put his name on the song. Rob was a really talented musician and song writer. We were engaged briefly, from '72-'73.
how interesting. i love all the back stories... but how could Rob's MOM sell the rights to the song?? if she did not pen the song, that would be illegal.
i like Mike's yodeling. but as far as the lyric changes, none of the lyrics really stick with me. so I'm actually curious to hear original lyrics! were they more "traditional" sounding?
@lewispeter I don't recall all the details, but I do remember Rob saying that it was his mom's boyfriend that pursuaded her to sign over the rights. I think Rob said they only got $100 for the music. Rob said the boyfriend had mob ties and not exactly on the up & up. She signed off, convinced that the song was just something cute that her son had written and it wouldn't amount to much. She may have sold the song directly to the boyfriend, who probably resold it for more money.
@lewispeter When Rob played acoustic and sang the song, it sounded less country, less twangy. More folk, like a James Taylor. It was '73. I was 19, he was 23. We lived in Tampa. I can tell you this, he smoked pot, had long hair and introduced me to Pink Floyd. He was in a rock band. Wish I could remember all of Rob's original lyrics. One thing for sure; Joanne was not a woman. Think Rob said she 12 or 14. He had a school boy crush on her. I thought it was really sweet.
if she sold it w/out him permission, he would still own song, and could go to court. anyway, i'm glad you knew the fellow and have some nice memories. the music business is just as nuts as the movie business. paul mccartney, i hear, advised Michael Jackson how lucrative it is to buy rights to songs, so MJ promptly bought the Beatles catalogue!
I saw Nesmith interviewed on American Bandstand singing Joanne, and Dick Clark asked him if he called it country music, and as you see in this interview he explains what he considers it
Its not country! Or at least not country thats been done the last 40-50 years. It may fit in better with folk music of the 20's or 30's if some would call that "country" Now if he deliberately sang in with a "twang" someone might be able to call it country.
As one generally stated elsewhere. The simple melody, the intense meaning in the lyrics, the unique way and feel that it was put together it really is a masterpeice. I would add "subtle." It is a very subtle masterpeice. And Im even more of a pink floyd and 80s rock fan.
@Billykid514 I think Gram Parsons started the trend of singers with a rock background to meld it with country. I love Mike, but I believe Gram popularized that country and rock style amongst the underground and later, through artists influenced by him, the mainstream
Winner. Nesmith always came off as the most serious of the 4 members of the Monkees. I don't know that toi be true but he does have a sensibility and a reserve about him that I find both strong and comfortable. I've heard this song a thousand times and I'm still not sure exactly what it all means. Never the less, I think it is a great piece of music.
Michael was always the most serious and tempermental of the 4 Monkees from all of the interviews and biographies I've seen. But he just wanted to do his music the way he wanted, but he is a wonderful artist in his own right.
I have just fallen in love with this guy. His songs are so beautiful (and he's cute of course). I had no idea either that he was so talented. He was shy and sort of quiet, but he sure is the "soul" Monkee in my book because his songs are with feeling. The pics of him in his native cowboy boots and hats are awesome
he said it in an interview ........guitar world magazine (with mettallica on the cover)97 or 98,real good in depth interview with the 3 of them after nez left the 97 reunion tour without telling anyone (he had his then manager do it.....but yeah i love nez too .......
These are some nice pics of him too... Very talented man. I also like his song "Rodanne" from elephant parts (it's my nickname... hehe) But anyway, his music will be loved for generations (after all, I'm just 22) as will the Monkees.
@shyman99 , try typing in Michael Nesmith Joanne Live, Austin city limits. It may direct you to no direct results, but under country it will show it live- its from an older austin city limits broadcast- it have on tape...but it's here on the tube
When Michael came out with "Elephant Parts" in the late 70's, I believe he did a lot for showing the music industry true entertainment with music videos.... I'd agree he is a much better entertainer than many seem to credit him with...
Good question...I had no idea how many great songs he wrote until the last week or so as I check out all the monkees videos here on you tube. Nesmith and the rest of the Monkees were and are so underrated. I watched the Monkees as a kid when it was first on, but I didn't appreciate at the time how talented they all are. I never heard this song before, it's awesome!
