I think many should learn the quote attributed to Lincoln--“Sir, my concern is not whether God is on our side; my greatest concern is to be on God's side, for God is always right”
@stuartdwork I agree .I never judge God by the men that worship him. This is a cool song. I have been a Buddy Miller fan for years. Thanks for your comment it is right on.
your a fucking fool this wasn't originally made the get students excited about us history. it's to let people know how ugly our country's history really is
@ 1949 Jens, not to be rude or disrespectful, but for a large portion of our history our ancestors believed in the notion of manifest destiny. That American success was ordained by god himself. So we did in fact believe just that. However, I see your point about the song. It does progress to a point where it could be seen as fairly anti-religion. But Dylan was a complex man, so arguing the true meaning would be pointless. This song's true meaning died with Dylan.
campbellfam.......the United States of America slaughtered millions of the indigenous...that is called genocide. And that makes God on our side. This was sung by Bob Dylan, Joan Baez and others to show the hypocrasy of the U.S. then and of course now, as well. We are not in Afghanistan to protect our 1st amendment rights.
Ya, know what good or bad, I don't know. What I do know is my cousin who is serving his 3rd tour in Afghanistan posted this so it has to mean something. Maybe I am just an " Old Stupid Dane " ( being 62 ) , but ever since first-time listening..I did NOT find it " ANTI-WAR " ,BUT ANTI " GOD " or the stupid believing in " If God´s on side we can do just as we want " .To me it is a song against ANY religious fanaticism and regimentation
I am in the UK and have liked Dylan songs since I was 13(I`m 59). I have always interpreted this song as not just an anti-war song, but Dylan was asking us to question most things not just accept them without thinking. I may be totally wrong but after all thes years I hope not!
I don't know if you mean't it, but this video does not fit the words of this sad ballad. It is NOT a celebration of American history, it's a poem about reflection on the justifications the U.S. uses to hate others, wage war, and kill.

All he is saying is God is not in our or anyone else war - war we do under free will! When God said thou shall not kill, I think he meant it! Those who don't like this song is because you can't handle the truth.

This video is a monumental fail! They're not smart enough to understand that Bob Dylan wrote this song as an ironic protest anthem to try to make people understand that patriotism and religion become jokes when they're used to support aggression and killing.

I'm glad for this kind of music. It shows the abuse of religion to advocate violence, and especially killing. I think you're all being unnecessarily angry at the uploader for how he made his video. I appreciate the work, nothing special is needed to underpin the message of this song! The only right side is defending yourself when it comes to violence. You've just put pictures that we've already seen to a song. It's not really saying anything interesting. Sorry. The song on its own was better because it makes you use your own imagination. Unless you have anything interesting or stimulating to say, don't waste your time. Apoligies if you are at school and this is a project, but if you are older than about 18 this is immature. And why not use the Dylan orginal?
@bobbypatz Where do you live??? To be fired because you believe in God??? That to me is outrageous!! And so far is against the law where I am. but we have those who cry discrimination of their beliefs If I say Merry Christmas. This too is OUTRAGEOUS. Everyone has the RIGHT to believe what they do, UNLESS it will harm others! THIS IS my Liberty!! I am truly SORRY for what you and your family have gone thru!
As bad as it is to miss the entire point of the song, it also leaves out what Dylan wrote as his 2nd-to-last verse: In a many dark hour I've been thinkin' about this That Jesus Christ Was betrayed by a kiss But I can't think for you You'll have to decide Whether Judas Iscariot Had God on his side. Maybe it's the most important verse, maybe just 2nd-most -- but it’s definitely the most chilling. And it is a literal desecration to sing the song but leave that verse out.
AWESOME song! TY for posting this - B. Dylans' message is anti war but it can also have different meanings to other people... I'm not saying war is right, but without it where would we be today? We sure would not have the rights we have today. It is protecting what we have and what we want..Maybe we shouldn't have interfered in any wars - to just sit back and watch what other people are going through and do nothing is just Wrong.... What would life be like then? - We all need a little Faith.
@Tuckahoe39 theoretically all people hate war and think we should have peace all over the world and at a first approach I would disagree with you but I have to say that somehow you are right..we really need some faith when there are some countries with expansive and imperialistic policy..
@Tuckahoe39 what liberties??? if i say i dont believe in god we can get fired!!! what liberties are you talking about?? only yours!! the nazis killed part of my family because they had god on their side, they wore it written in their belts!! so no more faith, please
HINT – eh eh you may want to check your history and source of your mind set that you have God on your side - You see dude Bob is mocking with irony those that think, anyone that thinks they can kill and have some God on their side, he means it is only an excuse to murder Man Oh Man get educated
Oh Christ, you've just bastardised Bob Dylan completely -.- funny how the ego-centric, delusional Americans (I'm not generalising to all Americans, FYI...) just don't get irony.
This is so bad that I can't watch the video and listen to the song at the same time. It's unwatchable. I think this is reason Dylan stopped giving interviews.
Maybe if people actually wake up and see that most of us are just stupid manipulated sheeple, guided to do this or that by the "elite" (the controllers). If the controllers were targeted and killed, it seems that we would have peace for a while until more scum got into control, which could be handled just like the last ones.
I lol'd at this. The meaning of the song is that no nation has God on it's side. It's just used to justify war. It's describing the horrible things in American history, an uncountably many lives lost, under the idea that God is on our side, or that we're doing "God's work". The lyrics of this song are not to be taken literally.
Instead of seeing the title of the song and conclude it with being an american hirstory song, just read the lyrics, import books about american history from Europe, reed them and then you re-edit your video and beside go back to school and listen to your own history classes. You people don`t know half of your country`s history, and that`s what makes you the world`s most dangerous people.
THOMAS JEFFERSON-->"Christianity is the most perverted system ever shone on man".Christianity stole its plot from older religions search Horus,Mithra,Attis,Krishna,Dionysus. The Ten Commandments are stolen outright from the egyptian book of the dead.O AND THE SONG IS ABOUT JUSTIFYING WAR & MURDER WITH GOD.See The bible is truly evil but people did with it what this idiot did with this song.I would rather be in any hell with john lennon thomas jefferson...than in any heaven with this fool. PEACE
Dylan sang this song with sincerity, I feel. The song is going to be interpreted differently depending on the person. So how ever the song moves you, it moves you. Don't try to explain it to other people how you think it should be interpreted. Unless Dylan posts his true one and only interpretation for this song, then just relax. I really like this version. Every nation/group thinks they have God on their side in war. But if God was on anyones side, than he'd stop war. I think its kinda sad.
@TheDimeStoreNovelist it is sad. but god have us free will its all very good going on bout how god shud be stopping war and saving us all from every little problem. but god wanted man to be free and so he gave us free will and look wat we did with it. we killed and we destroyed each other. but dont get me wrong i believe that somwtimes war is needed. ireland was a peaceful country untill the brits invaded. but then us irish had to get peace through killing. ah how ironic.
dylan wrote this as an anti war ballad and not as this moron thinks, an anthem celebrating war. For Christ sakes are you people really proud of slaughtering christ knows how many north american natives.........i don;t think so!
I'm confused as to why anyone could think this video is missing the point. By choosing serious images (indeed, the same images Dylan is speaking of), the author is taking the message behind the song seriously and using that to point up the irony and true meaning.
This is a sample of the rule that it is often hard to tell good irony from seriousness.
first Bob Dylan sounds better than this, and second i believe this song is about how there is no such thing as a god, this video got it all wrong....... just my opinion
It's absolutely incredible the way the lyrics are distorted and misinterpreted!
Have you by any chance realized that this songs actually speaks against the autistic behavior that characterizes a lot of "American history", namely against senseless wars that have been waged?!
It's mind-blowing, how can someone be retarded enough to listen to lyrics like "the cavalry charged and the indians died" and hope that encourages students to learn about "american history"...I hope you're not a teacher!
Just about the "calvary charged..." I believe that anybody not for us is against us and it is just human nature to fight. I like war for a lot of reasons, not because I love seeing "US" die but because I love seeing the other side die. "The objective of war os not to die for your country. It's to make the other bastard die for his." And it's hard to pay attention in school when something interesting isn't happening, like the teacher says "World War 2" and I'm paying attention.
Oh Mercy. How can an interpretation get it so wrong. This explains the Bush years...take a piece of anti-war culture and with minimal tweaking of video - hey presto - WE ALL THINK WAR IS SOOOOPER DOOPER
Saw Buudy Miller at the Wiltern on Sat night what a great muscian and songwriter/producer..etc... magical and what an array of guitars. This tour with Patty Griffin ... I was impressed with their positioning with World Vision and asking for donations and/or supoporting a child in need through coming to the concert...bravo Buddy
you have misunderstood the lyrics. this song is criticizing white america but in your defense it could be confusing with this douche singing instead of bob dylan
Just chiming in to say: The original Buddy Miller cover does include the Judas Iscariot part, which was cut out of this, and this is not an official video. Don't judge Buddy Miller's music because you think the video misses the point.
I cant even imagine how stupid you would have to be to hear this song then try to turn it into some sort of patriotic slide show. Way for everything to go right over your head.. wooo dead indians yea!
Do you Realize that Dylan wrote this song as tongue in cheek. It's talking about how foolish it is to say that God is on anybody's side when it comes to war. It's a direct insult to the mindset this video has.
This is absolutely hilarious. The part where he sings about the cavalry charge on the indians in a patriotic manner makes me lol. Boy this video adds layers of irony to Dylan's song.
What an awesome version. I love everything Buddy does, but his rendition of Dylan's masterpiece is even beyond. Thank you, thank you, thank you for posting this.
The creator of this video fails completely and spectacularly to understand the irony, humor, and mocking of Dylan's words any nation or group which would claim to have God on their side.
I think it really helps the Irony of the song to the nth degree and highlights exactly what the song is teaching those of us with a modicum of inteligence can see that people in general are blind to the truth even when its laid before them.
The powerful meaning of Dylan's song is totally lost. But It's lost because of this re.tarded person singing this song. This just proves how stupid Republicans are. Whoever did this cover is going to burn in hell for purposely distorting this song.
Such confusion! I didn't think any sentient person could confuse the meaning of this song, no matter what video accompanied it. Maybe I'm not tuned in to American thinking but, for me, the video enhanced the powerful irony of the song.
I prefer Dylan's version because the irony of the song is much more obvious. This version sounds a bit like it was just a patriotic song glorifying the USA. But it's a nice version, though!
maybe dylan is the difference between this being a hippies protest song and a good ole country boys song, I don't think I've heard Aaron Nevilles verion, but I really enjoy his music, but again I say the difference is that Dylan isn't singing it.
Actually, I'm a black vet that was trying to feel this version of the song, being that I heard if first from Aaron Nevil, and this country boy had me till he got to the current war and justified it with "God on our Side"...I guess we go with no questions? Pleaaasseee... but earlier in the song he said: "I've never seen a justified war"... he lost me in the end. His version is a contradiction. I've seen war, this artist hasn't - no religion justifies war, only politicians do.
Thank you for your honesty , being a irish woman, I have not heard Aaron Nevilles version, but I am going to listen to it next and then maybe knowing where you come from I might get a different slant on the song because of what you just made me aware of. It's worth a try, I'll go listen, then come back.
I just listened to the Aaron Neville version and because I am a Christian, I prefer the Neville version, but let me say this. The Neville version started with the chemical weapons, making me think that the Neville version was made around the first gulf war and Dylan recorded his version in 1964. Both are wonderful peices of work and now that I have experienced the Neville version, I'll be youtubing Aaron Neville more often, now, Thank you and God bless you and yours.
this guy changed the lyrics to take away the satirical meaning of the song. what a fucktard. he's glorifying what the original song cautions against. leave it to the rednecks, they ruin everything..
@ joeyrsl Where has he changd the lyrics? I listened 2 Dylans version they're the same.watch?v=BmDVyBceEv4
Musically. In this video here bgsproductions left out the Jesus/Judas part, but in Buddy's CD it's included.
Pls give a specific example where Buddy changed the lyrics, before you make a claim like that!
I agree though, that the song has nothing to do with the illusion about America & if u know anything about Buddy Miller & his music, than that he doesn't sugar coat anything either.
Very powerful...I was surprised near the end how it was very 'up-to-date' -- Keep up the good work.

Lynn760 1 year ago
I lol'd at this. The meaning of the song is that no nation has God on it's side. It's just used to justify war. It's describing the horrible things in American history, an uncountably many lives lost, under the idea that God is on our side, or that we're doing "God's work". The lyrics of this song are not to be taken literally.
"If God's on our side, he'll stop the next war."

its not just the americans, think back to the crusades, and thats where it all came from
OneHundredInNewYears 8 months ago
@OneHundredInNewYears Agreed, but it seems like Europe is quickly becoming more secular while America looks more and more like a theocracy.
Mysteryskatin 8 months ago
@Mysteryskatin Exactly. As Dante Alighieri said, ma fuck it... I'll say it in Serbian. "Весело се иде у злочин под заставом свог свеца."

I guess some people picture Dylan as something akin Chapelle's Bixby shouting, "Get that nigger!"
velvetfog 1 year ago
Dylan sang this song with sincerity, I feel. The song is going to be interpreted differently depending on the person. So how ever the song moves you, it moves you. Don't try to explain it to other people how you think it should be interpreted. Unless Dylan posts his true one and only interpretation for this song, then just relax. I really like this version. Every nation/group thinks they have God on their side in war. But if God was on anyones side, than he'd stop war. I think its kinda sad.
TheDimeStoreNovelist 1 year ago
@TheDimeStoreNovelist it is sad. but god have us free will its all very good going on bout how god shud be stopping war and saving us all from every little problem. but god wanted man to be free and so he gave us free will and look wat we did with it. we killed and we destroyed each other. but dont get me wrong i believe that somwtimes war is needed. ireland was a peaceful country untill the brits invaded. but then us irish had to get peace through killing. ah how ironic.
iradan64 1 year ago
dylan wrote this as an anti war ballad and not as this moron thinks, an anthem celebrating war.

@1canyonguy he left out this verse:
Through many dark hours
I've been thinkin' about this
That Jesus Christ
Was betrayed by a kiss
But I can't think for you
You'll have to decide
Whether Judas Iscariot
Had God on his side.

OftenDeadly 1 year ago
@OftenDeadly

Do you Realize that Dylan wrote this song as tongue in cheek. It's talking about how foolish it is to say that God is on anybody's side when it comes to war. It's a direct insult to the mindset this video has.
bluesboy25000 2 years ago 5
This is absolutely hilarious. The part where he sings about the cavalry charge on the indians in a patriotic manner makes me lol. Boy this video adds layers of irony to Dylan's song.

ColossalRofl 2 years ago
maybe dylan is the difference between this being a hippies protest song and a good ole country boys song, I don't think I've heard Aaron Nevilles verion, but I really enjoy his music, but again I say the difference is that Dylan isn't singing it.
Irishsheking 2 years ago
Actually, I'm a black vet that was trying to feel this version of the song, being that I heard if first from Aaron Nevil, and this country boy had me till he got to the current war and justified it with "God on our Side"...I guess we go with no questions? Pleaaasseee... but earlier in the song he said: "I've never seen a justified war"... he lost me in the end. His version is a contradiction. I've seen war, this artist hasn't - no religion justifies war, only politicians do.
media2k 2 years ago 2
Thank you for your honesty , being a irish woman, I have not heard Aaron Nevilles version, but I am going to listen to it next and then maybe knowing where you come from I might get a different slant on the song because of what you just made me aware of. It's worth a try, I'll go listen, then come back.
Irishsheking 2 years ago
I just listened to the Aaron Neville version and because I am a Christian, I prefer the Neville version, but let me say this. The Neville version started with the chemical weapons, making me think that the Neville version was made around the first gulf war and Dylan recorded his version in 1964. Both are wonderful peices of work and now that I have experienced the Neville version, I'll be youtubing Aaron Neville more often, now, Thank you and God bless you and yours.
