  • I have the CD-set from Moonjune Records (Blues for Tony) and I already played it so many times that if it was an old record it would look like a lady on a pirate ship! Wow, what a great musicians (all of them!). I know Holdsworth's music for a long time now, but I am amazed about what Alan Pasqua does here. Amazing, and I really love the structures he is playing. What a great musicians!

  • Holdsworth is the first technical guitarplayer, first album in 1969 !!!!

and he is also the best ever!!!

  • Allan Holdsworth is a Alien!

  • absolutely amazing!!!

  • ALLAN, one of the all time greatest, with a camera person who keeps the POV right on the money. KUDOS to whoever is working camera, and as always excellent work from Maestro Holdsworth !!

  • Anyone have a HQ version of Tokyo Dreams?

  • That's it? More Please... He's very good!

  • it's not emotional, not personal? What a stupid thing to say. Yes this is art, this is pure, absolute improvisation from the soul. Holdsworth's improvisation, for me, does tell a story, and does paint pictures.

  • This music...this music...doesn't tell stories or paint pictures...is this art? There was a time when I would have said no. Maybe still....

  • i hear ya man, its not very emotional or personal and that used to turn me off completely but now i look at it from an alternate perspective, more intelectually, considering the harmonic construction. it certainly has its own beauty, you just gotta be open to it

  • @RepublicanTorture You just don't have the senses to understand the story

  • @RepublicanTorture I beg to differ!!!This music DOES tell stories AND paints pictures. At least for me,few other music forms do so!!!

  • holdsworth is to guitar as a large 350 pound black man in to the prison showers, look out- you in for something big

  • LOL!

  • @bitcheznhos Hah!!!! That was awesome!

  • goddammit.... what a phenomenon he will always be

  • crazy

  • Nice music, allan is always inspired... :)

He likes weird fusion atmospheres. He is an exceptional musician.

  • Sick.... All I can say

  • Guy is a fucking beast, no wonder everybody bows down to him

  • Alan Holdsworth and co are just amazing . Alan is such a horn like guitarist,so ear friendly. I could listen to him all day and not get bored.

  • UFO !!!

  • BEAUTIFUL! Alan's style always gives me the chills. When others play fast, it sounds forced... with Alan it's like a harp glistening across the chords... but with all the added chill factor of changes.

  • good GOD

  • go listen to skynrd

  • hahah....this is far more complex than jazz yknow...allan works hard on making his hands sing for people who pay very little for his efforts...

rock is a punch in the face, jazz is a bunch of ninjas waiting for ya, and this music, (whatever it shall be) is the bad guy from terminator 2 ...hahah its not me whose talkin, its the caffiene

  • haha, good analogy.

  • I'm loving his tone on this.

  • yah, his tone in this is very saxxy

  • Yea, I love it!

  • Mr. Holdsworth is just visiting this planet. I, for one, am glad he's here!

  • "Mr. Holdsworth is just visiting this planet. I, for one, am glad he's here!" (scooticus)

    I couldn't put it better...

  • Thanks very much!

  • You're welcome scooticus, I just felt the same way, and I've loved your sincerity and sensibilty.

  • Have you guys considered marriage?

  • (deathlesshorsie)

    why, are you jealous?

I love women, always did, always will, so why don't you go and sit on an horse's fifth leg?

    ok?

  • yes i am jealous i wanted you to show me some man love...

  • than you better look for other sites, of that strange nature, cause this is not the place, at least not for me!

it's your choice, it's your problem, not mine!

and I'm having a little bit of an urge to tell you something you would hate!

  • I just assummed - that you liked Allan Holdsworth, you massaged other guys` egos, you have a username that sounds effeminate...I mean all the signs are pointing towards you being a raging bummer.

  • you are sick, you are one of the so many frustrated weirdos, that are poluting YouTube, and what you think or do not think, that is your problem, not mine.

unlike you, I'm a healthy person, with an healthy life

  • Correct I am sick - but I doubt very much you are in anyway healthy - hey good luck for the future Mark.

  • The guy's just on another plane. He makes it look so easy, like anyone could play complex 64th note legato lines without breaking a sweat. He is just not like the rest of us, which is why so many don't get what he is up to a lot of the time, myself included. I get tired of hearing it sometimes, but then again, he is speaking a language that, for the most part, I don't understand.

  • looks like he went back to his Delap Guitars. Good move. I honestly don't know why this guy keeps switching his amps around, his tone always sounds the same no matter what the amp. I guess he just likes having a lot of free amplifiers.

Well I would too if I had his gifts.

  • Allan holdsworth is one of the most talented guitarists on earth. Great combination of technicality, theory, feeling, and execution. perfect playing.

  • i cant say i dont like it, but if we talk about jazz guitar, i would say al di meola or metheny i dont know

  • u have to take into concideration the metheny or al di meola, play jazz a lot differently, holdsworth is an extremely clever man

  • I love all three of those guys, but none of them play "Real Jazz".

  • It seems that "real jazz" is subjective at best and totally dependent on the tastes of the listener. To me, jazz means improvisation through chord changes and should not be chained to a preconceived tempo, chord structure, groove or STYLE...I think the bebop players were being creative in this regard and using the rhythms of the times( 1940-1950's)...time has moved forward and the rhythms of today should be equally explored with the essence of the jazz spirit!

  • This is very well written, an I absolutly agree, like all inteligent people you are open minded, and without any prejudice or preconceived ideas.

Duke Ellington once said "There's only two kinds of Music, the good one, and the other"

I wish more people would share your point of view.

  • What is "real Jazz" Wynton Marsalis?

maybe this isn't the purist form of Jazz (wich I love), but you see under Jazz, you have Weather Report (RIP Maestro Zawinul), The Yellowjacjets, Herbie Hancock, Keith Jarrett, Larry Carlton, and tey are all great!

jazz is a fusion of cultures, of ethnic music, beeing born as a great american music.

OK, this isn't bebop, but who cares? I don't!Allan Holdsworth is a great inovator, a true genius, and a wonderful humble human beeing.

  • How sorry i feel for anyone who can not see the genius and the complete mastery of his instrument that Allan Holdsworth has.

When he is truly recognised it will be to late!!!!! As Frank Zappa said, " his name is Allan Holdsworth, the most gifted guitarist in the universe "

  • sounds like meshuggah xD

  • Right on the mark man

  • No, Meshuggah (Fredrick Thordendal) sounds like Allan Holdsworth ! thank you.

  • Is it all legato?

  • yea men , all legato , allan is a legato master!!!!

  • 36 seconds?????????? poooo poooo

  • i love AH. But his work with the synth/guitar systems kinda leaves me cold. I just like him with the basic guitar set-up. He's such a clean note player, with speed and articulation.

This stuff I love. The synkey/syntar stuff, just seems too overbearing. Cant tell if it's the guitar or the synth player.

  • Este bato loco si sabe tocar guitarra, This F*&^% dude really plays good guitar. And or every body else You suck!

  • toca demais o q é isso!!!

  • Just got the DVD, it's really awesome : image and sound quality is superb, cameras are great...I enjoy it a lot.

Pud Wud has a really magical intro, to be listened ;-)

But, strangely, I can't find this youtube sample on my DVD.

It's indeed 'Blues For Tony', but from another session, another day ?

  • I've been a fan since 1978 and I like the jazz but I sure wish he'd go back and re-explore the type of stuff he did with Bruford and UK. Before his solo career took off, he was pigeon-holed as a 'mercurial soloist' so he really needed to get out and stretch, but that was 25+ years ago. I'd love to hear a 'prog' type project with him again!

  • He just did one with a band called Planet X. Haven't heard it, but I'm sure his contribution is amazing as always. He's done a few other things as well. Check out "the real allan holdsworth" website for more info.

  • coltrane of the guitar

  • beaverliqour ur not the 1st person to say that, but i wish more would! I live in Prague and take jazz lessons off an amazing Berklee Scholarship jazz guitarist, and he has never heard AH!! What hope for mere mortals? But you know what, the angels hear him play. (Also unlike us they can understand what he plays)

  • So true ...so true. I had a chance to study in one of his master classes and couldnt make it. My one wish would be for one guitar lesson by AH..cheers

  • Muy grande......el mejor.

  • Allan's improvising almost makes me cry of joy!

  • i just saw allan at iridium in new york city. i went to two of the four nights and was blown away. it was just a trio with wackerman and jimmy johnson. allan is such a nice, humble guy. when i told him i might go to all four nights he said "ah, save your money!" i may have to ignore allan's advice and buy that DVD. it looks incredible.

  • great story powerofslack1,i saw AH recently in an awe inspiring gig in Prague and he apologised to me for his sound! believe it or not i told him off! Told him it made me sad that making a roomful of people happy didn't make HIM happy! (he responded to my babbling very graciously btw)

  • Hey all you Holdsworth lovers that want more free stuff; how about buying the dvd instead. It's supposed to be out this month. If you really want to support Allan, pay him the $33; it's more than worth it!

  • I've already paid 40 bucks and have not received my dvd. I'm a little upset about that actually!

  • Hang tough; it'll be worth the wait; I just think it's better not to give away the milk if you hope to sell the cow (to use a horrible analogy). I salute you for stepping up to support these awesome artists. I will do the same.

  • I miss wackerman on the drums, was waiting for that classic slow-groove that he used to do after a fast run like this, like on "secrets".

  • more more more please, AH is just amazing

  • Boo, Hiss!! Just when we were gettin into that familiar sound the plug gets pulled. Beat me , hurt me, make me write checks!!!

  • Can we get one whole frackin' song please? Just one. I'll probably buy this dvd....

  • yeah, give the people a whole song!

  • I third that statment give us the gift of holdsworth

  • fourth that

  • "Give the people an entire song!" What a whiney begging self-intitled little fool you are. What makes you think you deserve to get a whole song for free when a lot of people (including Holdsworth) spent their hard-earned money/time/effort to put together this DVD? Go beg for change on the streetcorner so you can afford to buy it. Just tell the commuters to "give the people" some money and see how far you get.

  • First, I've already bought the DVD! So shut up already. Two, I've been buying Alan all my life. I even have about four or five of his vinyl albums. Three, the argument I'm making is one of promotion. I think if you played Allan as much as Britney he'd sell more, maybe not as much but more. I also play music clips on my various sites but guess what: I don't play 47 second clips. That's insulting to the listener and to me...

  • Hey, congrats on the purchase. I was at Yoshi's the night they filmed this DVD, so I know you're going to enjoy it. I still don't think anyone's entitled to an entire song for free. If people aren't inclined to buy Allan after hearing clips they won't be any more likely to buy albums if they get an entire tune for free. Just my opinion.

  • I'd buy it if I could hold up a job and afford it.

    haha

  • I love this but can't you give us a whole song? Just one? You realize that no one knows that Allan is the world's greatest unknown guitarist. One way to give him some publicity is to play one whole frackin' song.

  • There is no need for a whole song, just loop it around 10 times because he plays the same stuff endlessly for long stretches. He's a genius, but he needs to break his "solo for the sake of a solo" mentality and focus on more experimental music. He needs to collaborate with musicians he would ostensibly never work with it. This way, he will truly mature as a musician and not just be a fast guitar player.

  • Oh I totally disagree with that. I suppose if I were a god I'd like to place him in Pat Metheny's band or the second Mahavishnu band just so he could "react" more...but I find his solos to be very very exciting. It's amazing what he comes up with. Just an astonishing technique...would it be nice if Trilok Gurtu joined the band sure but he's pretty interesting in his own right...

  • Interesting point. I think he does need to move out of his normal comfort level, though and work on experimental projects. How about a concert duet w/Bobby McFerrin, similar to that tour he did with Chic Corea. Maybe an orchestral work with Phillip Glass--just some light percussion and Alan to fill in all the space. Too bad there aren't any Miles Davis's around anymore to put together a . The only guy I can think of now would be Wayne Shorter. That would be a great combo.

  • Tony Williams played with both Miles Davis and Allan Holdsworth.

  • What would Allan do without the advice of his inferiors to guide him into musical maturity?

  • It doesn't take a genius to judge good music from total crap. Put this next to Kind of Blue, and it's easy to tell which is superior regardless of genre. You don't have to be a chef to tell the difference between a McDonalds burger and a specialty burger-right??? Music is about communication. Communication is about shared meaning. Communicate boring, repetitive stuff and I won't buy any new records. Once he starts communicating musically interesting ideas, I will buy a new record.

  • You're all over the place; he's a genius, but he's boring and repetitive. I guess he's the McDonald's burger in your analogy. Not sure if you meant to imply his music is "total crap". Fortunately there are plenty of people who regard his incredible music as fascinating- a shitload more interesting than Kind of Blue. Thank goodness he follows his muse and isn't pursuing any cheesy pairings like those you suggest.

  • Nice pun with the "cheesy" pairings to match my burger analogy. I'm pretty sure most music critics hold Kind of Blue in higher regard than Holdsworth at Yoshi's. However, I respect that some people may like him more than Miles. Holdsworth can follow his muse, however she will lead him to obscurity. About the parings-most people thought at the time that Miles' pairing with younger musicians on Bitches Brew was cheesy-now he's in the Hall of Fame. Where's Alan?

  • As Miles' said about critics "you still paying attention to them?". Bottom line: Holdsworth doesn't need advice from one who doesn't like his music. Very few people get rich off challenging instrumental music. He has been quite successful and thrilled many discerning listeners; if you call that obscurity, to quote miles again "so what"? (btw, the young musicians in Miles' bands were not novelty pairings that had little to nothing in common with the leader).

  • I never equate whether or not an artist sells lots of record as an indicator of success. Good music is good music-that's it. My whole point is I think there is a lot more to be heard from Alan and I wish he would explore it. Good luck with your DVD. My review without seeing it-"witness what we expect from Holdsworth." It is good to see Pasqua back.

  • I read a joint Holdsworth/McLaughlin interview once. AH said "I like your style of soloing" and JMc said "I would like yours if i had a fucking clue how you do it"! kaihelalahai, when in the presence of greatness a bit of humility would not go amiss my friend.

  • Tony Williams played with both Miles and Allan Holdsworth.

  • wow, a world's first, someone who in 5 lines manages to tell Allan Holdsworth what he "needs" to do twice!!for sure if you got the 9 other greatest guitarists on the planet in a room with AH for 2hrs not ONE of them would have the nerve to tell him what he "needs".
