@ash7990 they don't this was built by a group of engineers ,enthusiasts and funded by an army of supporters and donations . makes it even more special . its completely new i believe the boiler was built in Germany because its the only place still building them to strict regulations and conformity.
the train runs special trips throughout the year and is a great sight
Great show of the engine flying thro. But that guy in the background chatting reminds me of my old man that just won't stay quiet and enjoy the moment but needs to provide a running commentary for everyone.
Gotta love that! I've been close-up twice now and "new" is only half the story. Think CNC lathes etc and modern tolerances, that engine's basically "blueprinted". Wouldn't mind knowing the dbhp, I reckon about 2850 at full whack. Sweepstake, anyone?
Another great video of Tornado at speed and i estimate track speed of 75mph without question..even a little quicker maybe. From an Aussie point of view has the Tornado adventure diminished the other great restorations of steam locomotives in Britain in recent years? Probably in the short term i guess. Great posting and keep them coming Poms.
I think if anything its inspired people to try harder as there are now several other projects on the go to build 'missing' Loco's from scratch. Most projects are progressing with parts being ordered although they will all take many years and will all no doubt have to strive hard to fund the expensive stuff such as boiler, motion, cylinders and wheels.
I must comment re dasy2k. When Steam locomotives are on test I believe they are allowed to go faster than the 75mph limit. Certainly, if the train was carrying passengers I would agree with you however, on a recent trip, because of signalling problems, I think youll find that the authorities can waive..I beleive that Tornado was going much faster than 75mph....... I stand to be corrected
I'm sure a British Company like Wellman Robey could have made the Boiler as a one off. It's not that much different to the 8Ton/H Britsish Made Industrial Boilers where I used to work.
i am not sure on this as i watched the tv show about the boiler etc and i think they look at a british firm to build the boiler but none could do it to modern regulations, thus the german firm built it. i could be wrong on this
Those A1 Trust guys are an inspiration to people all over the world!
The engine is magnificent - the inspiration involved in its construction even more so.
Also I love the British habit of understating achievement. Regarding the 75 mph test - From this video (and apparently from the readings on the attached diesel) should I take it that a single British mph is about 0.75 the value of the internationally accepted value?
i think you have got your maths backwards there, if what you say was true then she was doing a slight over 55mph....
phrased the other way round it would be 100mph....
but then again tornado was doing 75 to the dot (any more than that and the driver is in major trouble as that is her max permitted speed (as with any steam loco nowadays) )
the fact that she can do the ton has little to do with it (as long as the signaller isnt looking and the otmr isnt checked ;) )
PURE BRITISH PRIDE !! .. One of our great nations achievments in these hard times. Britian Should be .. No, IS PROUD of Her, she is more then a loco, shes a symbol of the fact that British rail still produces pure beauty.
A touch of british pride perhaps, in the days where we cant even make a light switch a bunch of determined people managed to raise all the cash and knowledge needed to redesign and build a machine as complex as this.
The culmination of all the money and hard graft comes together in a shot like this should make any true english man feel great pride.
And as they said on the news, its a small boost in morale that the country needed badly as things continue to get worse.
Wow, The various bits of film on Youtube of Tornado going through Durham and Chester-le street have to be the most spectacular Railway related items for 2008 and maybe for some years.
brand new? or rebuilt? Diddnt think they make steam trains any more!

sadly the way this country is going there is going to be a time when we build nothing and all the skills will vanish

Yea It Did Do Over 75mph And The Driver Got Suspended for it.
porter6669196327 2 years ago
shame really, as I know the drivers would really love to open them up. These steamers are fantastic and can really put them to shame.
I propose a 10mile Drag Race between tornado and modern traction.

Steam or Diesel, both impressive to me.
the train operators have this fetish fer sardine -tin fuggin buses/ bus-trains, that's what gets my goat.
I dont see how these bus-trains are better than loco-hauled., plenty seats & space to stretch your legs on the loco hauled- upto 14 coaches.
