No one plays with the impeccable musical vocabulary on bass like Jaco. Used to Be a Cha-Cha? Havona?, Port of Entry? those solos are unmatched. The staccatto grooves like Barbary Coast, Teen Town, and yes River People are revolutionary. Anthony Jackson is great, but Jaco can play anything, and everything. Jazz, funk ,reggae, r&B, blues, latin, carribean, disco, classical, rock etc. Not just bass, the whole arrangement. He hears too much to be pigeonholed. Everyone tries to sound like Jaco.
@flickmeetwood Ya know, I feel compelled to respond to this simply because I like Stanley C more than Jaco P. I truly believe Jaco to be a great bassist.and if he is your personal fav so be it but don't get it twisted...Stanley can and does play anything from Bach to rock and all in between.
drummer is horrible?? You fuckin' crazy!! James Levi is always in the pocket! Jaco is brilliant, however, he never "holds down" any rhythm sections! Over played to much to hold down a rhythm section!
@chops5070 Jaco was brilliant and majestic at being Jaco, but he was NOT funky, nor could he lay down a serious soulful pocket groove. He typically overplayed in funk settings to make up for the lack of throw down solid groove capacity. On here he's playing his typical River People lick. I love it, but in this context it's redundant and NOT funky. A genius with limitations. Anthony Jackson is one of few bassist who can play the hell out of any genre.
@cleotube You make some valid points, but, all great bassist have limitations. For ex. Stanley Clarke is a monster on the bass, but he also has limitations. Jaco had a distinctive sound which I think all people of any art want. You want your sound to be unique, or you painting to be unique, etc. That doesnt mean he was the worst or the greatest. It just means he had his own uniqueness. If it matters, imo, James Jamerson was the one of the greatest groovers ever.
@cleotube That's not true, listen to the track Palladium on the Heavy Weather CD, he's got a funky poppin groove throughout. I will say about Jaco that his illness greatly effected his music/life. It made him who he was because of its compulsive behavioral traits that had him work manic hours practicing. It also made him prone to stress, and he started to repeat himself. He took off like a rocket and flamed out just as quickly. In his wake he changed the bass instrument forever, that he did.RIP

drummer is great but he does not lay down the groove like it is on the Man Child album which is disappointing.
