  • Gonna try this with my ridgeback

  • LOVE THIS VID!

  • While doing this, I used a concept I learned in horse training that I guess I kind of forget dogs use. They are so good at reading our eyes and body language, that if you look at the hips, you can get the step off in the opposite direction. Don't know if you mentioned that or not in the vid. I have been training since 1995, training other folks in a bunch of aspects of police and pet dog training. Very pleasant to learn something new!!! Thanks so much for the videos!!

  • This is the first video of yours I have watched. Wonderful to see you work with a dog.

  • hi! I do not understand english, how to teach the dog to move to the side ( 4m29s )

  • Thanks! I should try these with my dogs! Tricks are so easy with you! Any other video wouldnt explain like you do. Keep the tricks coming! :)

  • Can you tell me how to teach backing under, like under a chair where their head sticks out? Thanks so much.

  • 1) i am teching my dog this and i need a word foor the behavior eni aidias??

2)Amily plese come to israel!!! i love your work!!!!

  • It's a good idea to switch the object your dog is rotating before you get rid of it altogether. For instance, use a book then once you thing your dog is good at rotating with a book, use their dog bowl upside down or a frisbee before having no book. This way the dog doesn't get caught up with any one object and is more likely to be able to do this with no object.

    Otherwise, great tutorial Emily!

  • This is great. I've been looking for ways to build up strength and rear-end awareness in my senior dog, and all the other suggestions I've found involved spending a lot of money to get a bunch of DVDs or equipment I'd have to send away to another country to get (TTouch DVDs, cavalettis, exercise balls, etc.) I'll have to start this with him tomorrow.

  • Instead of using a clicker could you say good job? Pls reply!

  • Great video!

Just one question, should I click even though she steps of the book ?

Thank you for all your vids Emily! , I've trained my dog since she was 9 weeks from your videos, she's amazing!

Keep up the good work !! :D

  • my dog usually tends to sit or go down after he put his paws on the book.. D: what now?

  • I've heard of the 'seminariet' you'll have in sweden.

I think it's very interesting, and i'll sign up for it :)

  • This was extremely helpful thank you so much.

  • D: when i try to teach my dog a trick he sitts down WHAT DO I DO!!???

  • u again lol, ivy sent me. lol you r great:) thx for all the help, check my new trick vid :)

you got 2 be even more amazing then in your first vids.

  • u again lol, ivy sent me. lol you r great:) thx for all the help, check my new trick vid :)

  • Hello! Have you tried with your dogs to do the spin Tug does at 2:50 w/o the book? I'm just trying to teach my dog to do that but he confusses it with spining around... any sugestions, ideas, advice...?

    Thanks!!

  • Okay, I will try that. I will keep at it until I find something that works.

  • Great video. You explain every part of this skill very well, thanks.

  • Are you going to Sweden! How Wonderfull, where and when?

  • @finnbjerke its all on my website wwwdogmanticsdotcom It shows the cities and dates :)

  • Can't wait until March when your here on Vancouver Island Canada. See you then :)

  • @flyingpawz can't wait to meet you :)

  • great video!!

  • What if any verbal ques are you adding?

  • @cassiemily "swing" and "flip" for heelwork (or its a default depending on the behavior) and "orbit" and "bicycle" for free rotations

  • Well I think a tour in England would be the best - Derbyshire in particular! Excellent demonstration as usual.

  • @rombelinski i wish :)

  • I would love to see a video on HOW you taught Tug to reverse like he did at the end of the video. I am working with a 1 year old Border Terrier and Reverse is not a gear she seems to have:-)

  • @MaikaiHeddy zsianz1 has a good tutorial on that!

  • Also, i really think you should make a tour in Europe. I think you have a lot of fans here too (like me!) and I don't think there are many trainers like you here. Most of them still use questionable methods and are by far less creative. Greets from Austria!

  • @smortydella that would be great, I am going so many places this year, it will have to be next!

  • OMG! I looove the poodle!

  • what is your cue for turning right and left it sounds like you use orbit for a full circle going right? thanks Emily

  • @murwill1 "orbit" and "bicycle" I know, I know, i am running out of cues!!! I tried to pick two that sound different.

  • Great video, Em. Thank you so much!

  • Great video =)

  • Loved the video! Thank you for sharing

  • Another wonderful training video by you, Emily. I've been subscribed for months, but I never get a notification from the channel anymore like I did in the beginning. Anyone else having this issue?

  • @suezn5 hmm sometimes it happens but i believe not all the time, its some yt glitch

  • Another awesome video Emily!

  • Seminar? Canada? Please, please more info. Maybe a quick video slide or something?

    Thanks

  • @naisayd details posted on my website wwwdogmanticsdotcom

  • Ever since I taught my dog how to pivot (using your previous video as a guide) it opened up a slew of new tricks and behaviours -- just as you said. Walking backwards, awesome heel work, and loads of fun party tricks. My dog adores perch work!

  • @j3ssdavis :) yay! Sorry the last video was so long and boring!!! and pixelated! I appreciate that you made it through!

  • Hi emily, please could you tell me the name of the lead you are using with your dogs, the one that shows in this video with the white dog? Thanks!

  • @claudiahoyle its a long line- a leash- one that is extra long, the dog is wearing a sensation harness.

  • @kikopup thank you you are a star even finding time to answer me. I am trying to get some of those sensation harnesses because I tried the easy walker but it ends up pinching the dogs under their "arms" something I really do not want. Take care you're a star! Keep inspiring us!

  • When and where are you coming to Sweden? :)

  • @YvonneOster Hon kommer till Skåne, Göteborg och Stockholm i april. Läs om det på R+ Hundskola

  • @YvonneOster its on my website wwwdogmanticsdotcom

  • Hi,

Great vid. Tried it on my BC and it worked great.

One session was all it took.

Indeed u have to work on both sides as one can become dominant very fast!

    Greetz from Holland,

    Frank

  • @browndevil04 congrats! it doesn't take only one session for all dogs :) some dogs seem to have two left back feet

  • I just recently learned about this rear end awarness method for heel work. It makes heeling FUN! which is exactly how I wanted to train it to my dogs! This foundation excervise is so versatile too. I love this video Emily! What a huge resource this is and I really appreciate how you show clips of dogs in the learning process. I didnt know you were giving seminars in so many locations, I will have to look to see if any are in my area. I would LOVE to attend! :)

  • @snuggliepuppy yes and you and your pup can do some simply mind blowing tricks!

  • ;) fun!

are you going to Estonia too?

  • Awesome tutorial - you explain it all so well!

  • OMG you are an AWESOME trainer!!!! Best on youtube to me. ;)

  • Another great video! I love the last trick with Tug doing backward figure 8 through Splash's legs!

  • I'm not sure if Shiloh will do this. I know for sure she will not step on a book, so I will have to find something else. This will be a tuff one!

  • @delilah443 you can use something with a carpeted surface :) some dogs just dont like shiny surfaces. covering a book in duct tape makes it have more traction

  • Another great video!! I refer anyone with training questions to your videos!

  • I LOVE the way you explain each step, you explain them very well! I also love how you bring up some problems that people may have while practicing, so very helpful. Thanks so much Emily!

  • @LeoxPomeranian thanks for watching : )

  • Wonderful tutorial. . . looove the new 'Wheel of Fortune" step feature, very cool

  • @tehrenberg :) thanks T

  • just wonderful! I love all your transitions and stuff too, looks like a TV program! and the information is of course spot on. I love that you show with lots of different dogs too :)

  • Excellent tutorial Em! I have been wanting to teach Jake how to side step and was unsure on how to do it. Its a balmy 6c here today, unusal for this time of year in Canada, we're going outside now to start working on this new behaviour.: )

  • @JakeVomRivergreen i feel lucky that I can walk my dogs without freezing my butt off all year round

  • Hi Emily,

I am encouraging clients to use harnesses rather than collars now because I feel they are better for preventing joint and ligament problems.

I use Walkezee harnesses but difficult to size until dogs are more or less fully grown as they are expensive. I would love to know where you get the front clipping harness that the white dog is wearing as I don't like the ones that go under the front legs.

thak you, I'm in the UK

  • I LOVE that you demo'd this with a larger, not so agile dog. That, alone, gave me confidence that we can do this. Have looked and can't find your seminar schedule anywhere.

  • Lol, the method at about 1:54...I've always wondered if that was "ok" to do...makes sense now, you can always shape back away from it. I have one dog that I think needs that method, shes gotten stuck, while the others are spinning on their books...lol

I think teaching a dog they have back legs is one of THE most important/useful things you can teach.

  • Excellent video, Em!!

  • Kikopup, do a seminar in NY!

  • This is excellent. great job.

  • Awesome!!! I started rear-end awareness with Abbey but never kept up with it. Seeing this video makes me want to get back into it!!

  • Great tutorial.....thanks. Perfect to see it broken down step by step.

  • i like how u edited this

  • Are you coming to Sweden? OMG! Where and when?

  • Comment removed

  • @isdykusii Skåne, Göteborg och Stockholm. På R+ Hundskola hittar du informationen om seminariet.

  • We knew this trick before, even though we didnt work it out completely yet. I think we'll get that trick on again and post you a video response when ready.

    Thanks

  • Wow, that's exactly what I was looking for? I taught Gypsie( dachshund) to stand on on a box but i didn't know how to teach her to turn around. Thanks for sharing ;-))))

  • Thank you for your super interesting Videos!

I am also interested in Seminars online or locally - I live in Germany!

  • lovely training Emily with tons of information, thanks for sharing :o))

  • Seminars? On-line or locally? Do let me know when you're near Switzerland! Vela does twists already, but I'm going to review this with her this week. Thanks for the workflow. Looks super!!

  • while I am in no position to get or have a dog right now, I think these video's will really help me understand basics when I am finally able to get a pup of my own.

  • Another great tutorial!!!! :oP

  • u r an amazing trainer!! my favorite on youtube by far!!!

  • Wow! I love this video! Very informative! I will try this with Xiao xiao! :)

  • great video...love body awareness exercises:)

  • oooh cool software!!! I love the spinning wheel! I just started working on this with Twix over the rainy days we have had in SD. It is amazing how quickly Twix has picked up on it. I knew the book exercise, but I still LOVE watching you work with your pups! I do need to work on independent circle work. So much to work on so little time! See you tomorrow! :)

  • ahhh you totally are a life saver. lol. i just asked pam if she could make a tut on how to get them to spin backwards around me. X) your great thanks!

  • Will start training this tomorrow! Thank you! :)

  • Excellent! thanks! :-)

  • Definitely one of the hardest tricks for Lennon. He simply refuses to side-step lol
