Produced during the immediate post-height of Vietnam War intervention and with the full blast of 60's revolutionary ardour in the west the appeal of finding an ideal utopia which really isn't appealed to a cynical and jaded younger public especially a movie paying youth cult that mass media lusted for (pun intended and not intended here).
Accidentally discovered seemingly unspoilt utopia in a sea of carnage and bestiality that turns to the same beastiness in all people given the right circumstances: survival.
This was a fabulous movie! I saw it when it first came out and I think about it to this day! It seems dramatic to say that, but really, this movie was never understood or appreciated by the general public. It really is a Classic... and very few people get that!
John Barry, one of the best composers of movie music in the last 50 years. Especially for action adventure films like the JAMES BOND movie, but also dramas like THE LION IN WINTER,ZULU , MIDNIGHT COWBOY,IPCRESS FILE,BORN FREE,THE CHASE and MARY ,QUEEN OF SCOTS just to name a few.
Film Tracks website pointed out a slight similarity between Barry's main theme and Goldsmith's main theme for 'The Final Conflict'. Personnally I can't hear any clear similarity although I suppose it's most likely to start at 2.05 in this video. Anyone else have any insight into this. Barry really was a wonderful melody writer and arranger, but it is slightly easier to identify many of his scores from the sound of the French Horns.
Words cannot describe how achingly beautiful the last five minutes and finale of this music are. Thank you John Barry for this music!
By the way, the film The Last Valley is amazing, and Barry's score is an integral part of the experience.
Michael Caine was particularly disappointed at the relatively poor commercial reception this film received. However, it's easily one of his finest performances (German accent and all!).
@Tapiola2007 One of my favorite movies. I can readily see how Michael Caine (and probably the director and producer) would be unhappy with its reception. My hope is that it will eventually be recognized much better. John Barry's music was, as usual, very well suited to the material and enhanced the movie. What a career and legacy!
@ccdg1066 Hi, It's more than a year since I wrote my comment and John Barry has just recently died - how sad. However, we have all the wonderful music he gave us - to be enjoyed while watching great films or alone as great compositions.
Muito Bom , geralmente às pessoas quando vam ao cinema não dão a importância devida da trilha sonora do filme, e aí está um grande compositor como jhon barry. Amusica já fala por si
It was around 10 years ago I was still in HS came home from a party late @ night and this movie was on and I sat and listened to the part when they did enter the one valley and I was forever hooked on John Barry... Music with soul and a source of empowerment.. Unlike the main stream music of todays world musical scores like this will go on into eternity... bravo... LOL
I saw the film in the late 60's, loved the music and have been playing it ever since. Wonderfully stirring and emotional. I just wish the final track was a little faster.
I think iKittay is right with Moonraker, and I also hear The Black Hole, which stephenm6100 suggested. But do not forget the theme of Dances With Wolves.
John Barry is a god. This has been haunting me - at work, driving, at home, whenever I'm doing anything - he's the best. I'll throw in Lalo Schifrin and Ennio Morricone, maybe Michel Legrand if you're dealing with projects from the Sixties or Seventies, but Barry is the best.
I just saw your posting. I agree totally. I saw John Barry live in 1999 and the concert was worth such nuch to me - I was in Heaven so yes maybe he is a god.
Great film, great score. For some reason, there are almost no films originally English language dealing with this period of European history, not counting Dumas adaptations (and The Three Musketeers, although taking place during the spillover religious wars between Catholic and Hugenout, does not touch the apocalypse that devoured the German states).
A population that dropped 80%. They were the wealthiest, and best educated when this started. By the end, cannibalism. Thanks, Mr. Clavell!
yeah saw this film on sky movies gold about two years ago.nah col steiner in the eagle has landed his best german accent.i was measured for my coffin months ago.
Caine has such a dead on German accent in this movie it is tough to remeber he's British! Oskar Pedersen's slimy priest was great as well, very memorable characters all around. If only they still made movies with this kind of quality both behind and in front of the camera.
FYI... one of my favorites, too - but just so you know, most of the really juicy bits of dialogue were lifted intact, or nearly so from the source novel by J.B. Pick, including the one you just posted. Clavell was a great writer, and to his credit, he found the best parts in Pick's book, re-assigned some of it to different characters, and made some great stuff up like the subplot involving witchcraft.

Excellent film and the soundtrack does much to immerse you in the miserable times the film is based in along with the tranquility of the valley.

The movie is about the Thirty Years War and a village that was hidden in a valley that had escaped the war until being discovered.

...have never seen this movie; not even on late night. It looks like it might be similar to the Conan the Barbarian...
What's the storyline?
