  • its basically monkey see ,monkey do

  • "HEY!! HEYYY!!!"

  • interesting but you should try it off campus to see what adults do, kids tend to mess around, but adults might have more interesting responses.

  • @AKmacintosh just what i was thinking.

  • I do hope ethical guidelines were followed with this :)

  • Glad there's a mute button

  • The camera was out in the open it is pretty obvious that every one can see it

  • And this proves that humans are trolls.

    Espescially when they're teenagers.

  • @Klomster88 They basically are, and more over it's a known psychological phenomenon. When you're not allowed to do something this actually makes you want to do it more, especially with children who don't fully comprehend the consequences ("who knows what was under that sign, it could have been a bomb or something!")

  • Now I know why people walked all over floors I just cleaned or refinished, many of whom are doctors. I thought people were retards or pompous assholes; the sign reverse psychologizes them and encourages not to obey. Add the symbol of a landmine exploding with the "DO NOT STEP HERE" sign... bet nobody will come near it.

  • lol funny :)

  • What animals. None of them are acting like humans, what a great job the glorified Baby Boomers did at raising their kids. Where is this?

  • @KingMacintosh We are the animals, we wage war to gain power, we eat other animals to survive, we fight for dominance and hunt and gather and we reproduce making more copies of us. We are animals, but there's ones that deserve to be with a chain around their necks and some that don't, no more, no less.

  • @blackcry22 There is a different between acting like a human being, animal or not and acting like a completely uncivilized animal, more or less. We don't need a "state the obvious" type counter-argument because you are unaware of what I originally posted. The behavior e.g. 1:05 is embarrassing and not that of normal civilized human beings.

  • @KingMacintosh I can see what you're getting at and what I was trying to say(sorry i didn't specify myself more) is like the way you described it.

  • it's highschool and the sign is too small.. not a good experiment

  • however conducted this experiment should die

  • In Bronx NYC ppl would step the shit out of the sign I kno I would lol.

  • I like the idea of the video. This would have been a better test if the public was unaware that a camera was recording them. Many people deliberately jumped on it just because they saw your group and camera; vice versa, many people also deliberately did not step on it because of the same reason. Maybe set it up on a tripod a good distance away and zoom in for the the frame you want.

  • Nonconformity¿ ¿ equals Conformity

  • Demand characteristics ftw.

  • There is no manipulation or control, by very definition this is not an "experiment". It's naturalistic observation at best.

  • @FeralGrandevil Not even that. A couple of idiots videotaping themselves flailing around a piece of paper on the ground.

  • next time, add mines.

  • There was something like that at my school but it said "do not take down this sign"

  • Jackass music :D :D lolz

  • i love the people who go out of their way to jump on it

  • because people like being ass holes

  • the people being experimented on should NEVER be allowed to see the camera. learned that in high school, folks

  • I work in a big museum's gardens ... There's signs everywhere forbidding you to step on places (such as the grass); and people completely disregard those ... like sitting in front of the fucking sign ... and it's a huge percentage !

  • @ATLBrasoveanu If I say to you, "Don't SMOKE" what don't you do? The word SMOKE will most probably be your first answer and you'd be correct. However the word don't is not processed by our unconscious minds, negatives don't exist. The idea of smoking is now in your mind sorry for that if your a smoker. We are largely unconscious creatures, we've all driven down a road that is familiar to us and when we arrive we think, I don't remember the journey. This is our unconscious mind taking over (temp)

  • first, they see you with the camera. but for me, i believe this experiment is stupid simply because a makeshift sign taped on the ground that says do not step here, it runs through peoples minds as a joke, if you see something like that its obviously not professional and not going to be taken seriously because there is no reason why you cant step on a small sq ft of area on a sidewalk. obedience needs to either have a logical reason, or a hierarchy.

  • This is called "The Bullshit Effect".

  • i would step on it on pupose cuz

I DO WHAT I WANT lol

  • wtf man you can't do this with the camera in plain sight, are you seriously that oblivious to the fact that that will affect what you're testing?

  • @palidan99 Dude, we were in high school and lazy, and it was for class, and we got an A. so stfu =]

  • I'm so tempted to actually run this test CORRECTLY (without people knowing they're being studied)... there's a great spot in my school where I could run it without being noticed for about an hour and a half a day where basically the entire school - including teachers and administrators - passes all the time... and I could do this in stores and on the sidewalks...

  • @LandenEctomy well the "do not step here" is a flaw in what they are experimenting. it does not give them very solid data because obedience needs to in most cases have a logical reason for obeying or a hierarchy involved. so that type of sign i believe would give a good representation of this. there are so many possible variables in what the sign says that will alter the reactions of people.

  • What an insult to real psychology... I find that every possible corruption of data was present. This whole "Test" is a joke. Somebody with better resources, more maturity and an idea as to how a sound experiment should be like, might actually find relevant data. This is a disgrace to real psychologists.

  • wonder if people realize they still didn't do what the sign said after they stomped and jumped on it. lol

  • typical Y generation - no respect - not even for a piece of paper. Should sent them to Afghanistan to find land mines......

  • Comment removed

  • you should have a rifle aimed at the offender

  • I'm gonna do this experiment, but without the camera... so i can get real results. I'll post em here.

  • @sarsfieldusmc

How are we gonna see your results if you don't use a camera? ;)

  • @SuperTinus87 I meant via written post

  • You having the video camera completly erases all relevancy in that test. plus the signs to small, you should try the same test with double doors...

  • Got another experiment for you: a "STEP HERE" sign... If that were conducted in Brazil (where I live) someone would probably steal the sign but most people would not step thinking it was some set up.

  • What if the freak of the school thinks the sign says pick up and eat this sign?

  • What happens if they see someone lose their foot when they step on it?

  • 0.46 future serial killer?

  • @hoochis Nah, likely to perform a job, in which he obeys all rules and stuff. Not likely to be a serial killer.

  • Nice job, interesting :)

  • Obedience to signs? It's a piece of paper, which no evidence of legitimacy. What a failed experiment...must be some high school project...lol

  • this isn't a good example at all. because of the context of where it's placed, the sign is obviously meaningless. thus, they know it's a joke or experiment. ddduuuh.

  • notice how all the black people step on it

  • Human beings are like sheep. They will generally do whatever you ask them to, however as seen in this video - this doesn't applly. They didn't have a proper control group, this applies more to the 'Bystander Effect' then an audio/visual experiment.

  • LOL i totally wouldv'e started river dancing on that spot

  • what the heck? did you professor yawn or something?

  • seems alot of students wanted to bash authority. i know i would.

  • What more can you draw from this besides people yes, will conform and obey the sign, or some will disobey the sign? Let's dig deeper than this and do more subtle experiments please.

  • i want 2 step on it so bad!

  • hah you should have put some sensor under it so when people stepped on it it sounded like they set off an alarm or something

  • In the words of comic book guy:

    worst. experiment. ever.

  • They are looking at the camera! What type of experiment is this when the subjects are looking at the camera???

  • Dang, the top voted comments both said what I was gonna say lmao

  • This experiment is a complete failure.

  • you need a hidden camera derp derp

  • I would have picked up the paper.

  • lol i think i heard from dane cook or something that he should put a sign on a revolving door that say pull and not push

  • next time make it a hidden camera dumbass

  • The Jackass theme song shreds any small bit of validity this experiment might have had standalone.

    And I like Jackass

  • It would be interesting if they had a whole bunch of people not step on one spot, then see if the test subject steps or not.

  • look at those kids

"i disobeyed the sign, i'm so BA" looking at the camera

  • stupid

  • Great test but obviously they knew they were being watched. LIKE

  • waist of time

  • its rebelious acting, even if its just simply stepping on a little square. and the people who didnt step on it realize its just a square and nothing will happen but it doesnt bother them to follow the rules.

  • The entire time, I was imagining a stink bomb or something going off for the people who stepped on it.

  • those guys that stepped on the sign are so hardcore

  • lol.

  • This is stupid. Most people in this video are clearly conscience of the camera watching them.

  • why wouldn't they? there's a mark on the ground that's of course been placed by other humans. why would someone place it there for no reason?

even if they didn't know about the camera, I doubt there would be any difference.

  • Bahaha cool

  • I like how the people look tough and gangster after stepping on the sign.

  • they cant read

  • Okay , read this. Did it ever occur to u the number of students who were and who weren't Black that even participated? I def saw white ppl jumpin all over the sign blatantly.!! Maybe the people who posted the study only chose to put up specific parts of the footage bcuz cleeerly this is edited footage. Can YOU read?? cuz I most certainly can. Thanks.

  • Actually I saw far more whites than Blacks jumping on the sign!!!!!!!!!!! So wtf, can u count??

  • what the hell is this bullshit. old fashioned or something? i thought the US was over the racial thing

  • They probably thought it was an electrical outlet and didn't want to get electrocuted.

  • I suppose part of it is the camera being in plain sight, so it's clear it's a test. I think, if I saw the person recording the scene, I'd probably assume there's no risk and step on it. If there was nobody around making the test obvious, I would maybe avoid the step just in case it could harm my safety (or someone else's) somehow.

  • honestly i observed that black people were more disrspectful to the sign...

  • Comment removed

  • I bet you are a KKK member

  • good for black people, i guess they see authority for what it truly is, bullshit

  • @LukeNikolau you are an idiot LukeNikolau for posting that reply...there is always one ...

  • Why, you don't like black people? How racist of you. You piece of shit. It's because of people like you that this world is crawling with evil!

  • @LukeNikolau ...with reference to the previous post ....don't be foolish trying to turn this around you sad case .. ...you really are a twisted, juvenile idiot and a bigot for bringing racism to this post. ... now run along and play .... you got the reaction for your post of 'Black people'. .. how old are you? 12, 13?

  • LMFAO. You inferred that much from me from merely commenting "Black people"? Lol? I don't hate black people, or ANY ethnic background for that matter. You know why I post it? I'm trolling. It's hilarious to get the kind of reactions that I do. I guarantee that you're an adult, you're probably married... and you think you're a bigshot for calling me a bigot (ooh, haven't heard that one before!) and a 12 year old. Yeah, as if a 12 year old would type the way I do.

    Go kill yourself.

  • @LukeNikolau ... sorry - I got your age wrong ...

  • it has the same effect as the "dont push this button"

  • hawthorne effect...the subjects knew they were being studied...

  • @mnm5476 The message also says "dont step here" and we don't process negatives in our unconsciousness, for example what don't you do? "step here" is the message our unconcious receives. This pyschological experiment worked whether they knew they were being studied or not. Imagine if the stepping point gave out an electric shock, they didn't know that until they stepped on it. What you witnessed was a hypnotic effect of mind control, they were compelled to and controlled to step on it.

  • wish there was like some hole with acid so ppl would learn to respect signs! xD

  • hey, DON"T pull the pin!

  • umm actually it's not flawed at all lol. If you put a sign that says step here, they will not due so. But if it says do not step here they are more likely to do so. Reverse psychology ftw lol

  • Obvious that the camera is visible to onlookers, and that changes the experiment.

  • LOL DUDE THATS FUNNY (^-^) i would jump skip run-over stop on that sign for absolutely no reason =D y

  • this is seriously flawed, but fun to watch anyways.

  • lol i guess it would a lot more successful if they didn't see the camera

  • you better write don`t step her o you will die

  • Pop? Where are you from, the midwest?

  • This is a terrible experiment with an awful methodology. Go back to the chapter where they tell you about confounds...

  • The lowest IQs just stomp on it.

The middling IQs completely avoid it.

The higher IQs tap it to check it for safety, they may or may not step on it, depending on their attitude.

  • sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo shallow explanation

  • Then, there's the person that takes off his/her shoe and slams the shoe on the sign, finding a loophole in the system and avoiding any misfortune that may have come upon him/her by stepping on it.

  • and if tapping it revealed that it was covered in super glue and it got stuck to your shoe? who would be the smart one then??

sorry but there are too many factors for you to go labeling intelligence levels.

also the IQ test is horribly flawed

  • I'd step on it.

  • positive = i enjoyed this - only to see people finding more constructive ways to step on the sign than just walking over it

negative = the sign is too small and discreet, few people may even notice it

and the obvious-ness of the camera was quite disappointing

  • unfortunately there is alot of people like those (people who stepped on the sign) in this world. Sad huh. Think everything is one BIG joke.

  • Yes the world is serious, no one should ever enjoy themselves EVER.

  • this sort of obviously is a joke.

i'm probably the most serious person alive but i'm know how to have fun occasionally and i certainly don't put down others for it!

  • I just love that some people (usually teenagers) get a huge rush of joy by defiantly jumping right on the sign. Though they have gained or accomplished little to nothing, they internally feel like they have been brave or risky.

We think in the funniest ways

  • Thats actually a good thing. As long as they stay like that. Do not conform.

  • seconded

  • yes, i agree with you. Its a way of rebeling, breaking the rules even if its a small thing(especially in this case, they dont believe in the experiment or the pesky rule), its still an accomplishment and joy to know that things can and will be bended or broken. Not to feel strapped down and to feel in control is the goal.

  • Negative suggestions

  • According to Gord, people obey signs that say "don't steal me" and "hey! I suck! Buy me!"

  • It might encourage more honest behavior if you didn't point a camera at it.

  • wouldn't the fact that people knew it was being filmed play a factor in this? there was not any real authority behind the sign, just a man with a camera.

I was just curious if the camera would cause more people to step on it just to put on a show.

    otherwise, enjoyable =-)

  • Now I kinda want to do that in my city, haha.

  • haha love how they actually formed a croud arround the sign

  • This looks like a set up.

  • No duh.

  • Did that guy in the black and red shirt get cock-punched?! 0:58

  • ya he did..hahaha..u see doing the both the opposite is also being a sheep

  • HAHA i wud be jumping on the sign if i see one

  • "Hey stay away from that shit!" XD

  • LOL

  • freakin matt. you stay away from that shitt.

    lol

  • haha! i did this:-) good job guys, hope we get an "A" (cough cough)
