  • @sobefobok I wouldn't use generic plastic to make the sodium hydroxide (lye) solution because it could get hot enough to soften some plastics to an unsafe level. I would suggest using Nalgene type containers that they sell at container store and elsewhere. They also have screw caps so the noxious mist is contained.

  • after making the soap and after cleaning it out, is it safe to use the metal pot for food?

  • @piccolo3431 We reuse ours for other things, but that is my personal choice and I'm not qualified to give any scientific data on it. Our logic is that soap is what you clean things with so why wouldn't it be safe? At the same time, it could be more convenient to have dedicated soapmaking utensils. They really aren't that expensive to buy at thrift stores. Great question!

  • Do you put vaseline on the inside of the pipe so that the soap will come out? I made some soap yesterday, and used a clear pipe, and I didn't put any oil or vaseline in it, and now I can't get my soap out - help!

  • @LTTPUK We put the pipe in the freezer for a few hours and it usually comes out easily after that. The diameter of the pipe is large enough for you to fit a can of soup in there, which helps put out the soap.

  • I'm looking to make a 100% vegetable based soap. No lye or lard.

  • Cool video

  • Nice cool !

  • Love it. I tried this recipe and just love the way this soap feels on the skin and it has great lather. Great video! :)

  • can someone please tell me what it means when a soap recipe asks for 20 ouces of water?

  • Cool!

  • Can you measure the lye in a glass or pyrex container, or does it have to be plastic?

  • @sobefobik

I use pyrex but make sure it has no cracks or it could explode from the heat change. Actually that is a hazard with any age pyrex but my "soap mentor" (the person who taught me) has always used pyrex and has never had a problem in her many years of making.

  • Your farm is so beautiful :)

  • Great Video. Thanks For Posting.

  • this guy doesnt really look like your typical soap maker

  • cure time 4-6 weeks is better.

  • Great presentation Everette, thanks so much this made things clearer for me

  • i like the chicken!

  • Thanks for the video, but I'm inquiring to know as I'm looking to make my own soap. What is the diameter size of your pipe and the end cap size ?

  • @zabulun I don't blame you for not watching the whole video, as I know it is way to long and unedited. Our new videos are typically only 2-3 minutes max. As I mentioned near the end when removing the soap, the pipe is 3" diameter and made for use as underground water pipes.

  • Thanks for this video, even though I am a year late viewing it (lol) this video was very helpful. I am a newbie to making soap at home as I was not sure about using lye in my home and I was a little afraid to. You made it look easy and safe. The pipe was a great idea. I will give it a go!

  • Where do you buy lye at...and where can you find lard and coconut oil at in the grocry store?

  • @EeshieKing the only place I've found lye is at Ace Hardware. Home Depot and Lowes does not carry it where I live. Hope you've found it by now.

  • Cool! By ;the way, I find my soap most mild starting at the 4 week mark and harder.. Even 6 weeks is better. I find the lather better as well as it ages, especially if there are no or little amounts of lathering oils such as coconut. I wish I could use my soap that early and them be mild enough though! Have fun!

  • Does vegetable shortening work in place of animal fats in lard? Just curious.. awesome video!

  • @Bccaundefined yah it does

  • Cool. I used to make soap. Fun times.

  • I followed this recipe, and poured it into pvc pipe day before yesterday. I cannot get it out of the pipe! We froze it, used cans...I'm worried to leave it any longer in the mold. My husband is going to use a skill saw to cut the pipe. :( Not sure what else to do, though. Do you have to prep the pipe or anything? I might should have used the exact pipe you did. Any suggestions?

  • whoa this totally rminded me of fight club...

  • I was just wondering what kind of piping you used for the mold. This is a very helpful video. Thanks for sharing it.

  • I used the piping from Home Depot that would be used to bury for plumbing, such as a pipe going under the ground to the septic tank. You could also just use plain PVC pipe. I'm glad you liked the video!

  • That turned out a nice colour.

  • This is a great demonstration of how to make your own soap at home. I wonder if there is anything you could suggest to vegetarians who don't want to use lard. Could you just replace the lard with more coconut oil or other oils?

  • Here's a good recipe for a basic vegan soap: 35% palm oil, 40% olive oil or high-oleic safflower oil, 20% coconut oil, and 5% castor oil. If you don't want to use castor, increase the olive or HO safflower to 45%.

  • Just be careful where you get the palm oil from. As they are destroying rainforests to plant palm trees just for the oil.

  • @GaiamSearch yes! just add more of both there both hard oils and lather well so just add more of those two oils and u should be good to go :)

  • This was our first attempt at producing a how-to video. There are some glitches and things we'd like to have done better, but I guess we'll have to learn our lessons as we go. I hope you enjoyed it. Making soap is a heck of lot easier than making cheddar cheese! For that, you can see one of our other videos. :-D
